      Feels like maybe he was still feeling a bit warmer towards Adam in the early days? Iirc Adam being on the show was Jamie's suggestion so he must have had a good working relationship with him initially. He clearly doesn't like being teased in the ways Adam likes to tease him, and there's the occasional hint that Jamie has a problem with things being hammed up for the camera.
      I imagine over time those things grated more and more, causing him to perhaps close off a bit.

      Definitely the case. Jamie was the boss of his own well established company that landed a gig with Discovery channel . Initially Adam was brought into the show as a ‘lesser’ cohost that was supposed to bring persona and color into the mix.
      As Adam importance rose fast and then he was supposed to be upgraded to be an equal host to Jamie. Jamie had some teething pains because the ‘fun guy’ didn’t land on his feet, running. Adam has circled around ‘this’ on several occasions hinting that this was the case.
      I adore Adam to this day but this episode highlight how poorly he handled that task in front of the camera. Way more than half the shots of him is him sniping, complaining, relentlessly petty goofing on Jamie, just to push buttons. They are both not handling this change constructively at all, one might say…but Jamie wasn’t the right man to mentor Adam into his new role while he had a business to run at the same time… and he ain’t the type to no ones surprise.
      I would say that Jamie has “towed a consistent line” more than Adam. They both settled into their roles fairly quickly but jeez, Adam doesn’t look the part at all in this episode. It’s quite an eeeech’ watch. 😖

    I've been lucky enough to see Elvis, the most famous Erickson S-64 skycrane of them all, take water from our swimming pool in the backyard of my childhood home in Central Victoria, Australia... It took almost all of it over 5 runs, and dispensed it on the furious bushfire burning just a few kilometres from our house.
    It's a truly awesome machine and those pilots have insane skills. I have some pictures of them positioning the massive machine, with barely two metres to spare for the giant rotorblades, in between the two huge ghost gum trees beside the pool and barely a metre to spare for the tail rotor (which they can't actually see) and powerlines on the other side of the fence line. Those pictures ended up on the news and on the front page of the local newspaper, which was pretty cool for a 13yo aircraft nerd to see! 😊
    It was a pretty windy day too, but those guys came in like it was nothing and just nailed it first time, every time. It's always awesome to witness pros at their top of their game, operating under real pressure.
    And luckily in large part thanks to them, not a single house in our neighborhood (which backed right onto a huge ironbark eucalyptus forest) sustained any damage on that terrible day of widespread bushfires.

      I'm not sure if it'd be online... I doubt it would be, but the newspaper it was on the front page of was called the Maryborough Advertiser and although I can't remember the exact date, it was during the fires we had in the area in the first couple weeks of February 2001.
      I still have the paper at my parent's house, I'll find the date when I go over there on Sunday I'll be sure to check if I can find them. I've got a feeling they also ended up in the Ballarat paper called "The Courier" too and they're more likely to have been uploaded to their digital archive I'd dare say. Maybe they were in "The Age" too... Man it's been a long time since I opened that box of memories, so I'd have to check and try digging them up. They were great pictures though, Dad had a pretty good camera and happened to be overseas on business so I got lucky to have the best seat in the house and get the pics myself.
      I'll try to check in a couple days and see if I can't find a link for you. It'd be fun to see them again to be honest, was one hell of a memorable day!
      We were going through a drought in the area at the time too... They didn't ask if they could have the water, we were out in the yard keeping an eye on the fire when the giant chopper came overhead and the pilots gave us a wave before lowering it neatly between the trees. Then came back another four times before moving on to another neighbour's pool. Without those heroes, pluse the crews on the ground, it's pretty safe to assume our house and the entire neighborhood would have been reduced to ashes.

      I searched everywhere for the pics I took in a digital archive and couldn't find them, I have the newspaper from the day they were published but unfortunately they weren't archived. Shame because I think they're some of the best pics of it in action. Elvis is real legend of Australia's struggle to live in this country of extremes.

      @@NathanaelManson that's not the case though. I mean they would compare the mass of dinosaur with the mass of a track, for example. It is just something typical for shows on Discovery (and some other big TV channels). Comparing some thing with other instead of saying direct value might seem illustrative, but often is quite confusing. And this is something you would hear all the time. And the main reason, I think, you don't need to research for exact measurements to say it. So it is risk free and the easiest way to write the script.
      If you say "this thing has a weight of 2200 kg" you need to actually check the value. But you can go the easy way and just say "this thing is massive" or "this thing weighs like a car".

      @@d4slaimless We are not in disagreement, even though my answer to your remark may not be as relevant in this case, it's not as if we are talking about making explosives here.
      Naturally you would need to know the values for the calculations to be satisfactory and correct. No one is a fool enough to drive their family over a bridge knowing beforehand that the engineer that constructed it did so because he simply imagined or told himself that it "should just about" hold. All i am saying is that the usage of these poor analogies or guesses is that it may allow someone, like a scientist, to explain to laymen roughly how that phenomena works without having to get into technical jargon. That someone, like a chemist, can teach you the process for making bombs, without handing you the direct recipe for its explosive construction. This is my only argument, we can use analogies or comparisons to intentionally obfuscate the actual values. I am not whitewashing what he said.
      EDIT: Also, since when has analogies and sketchy comparisons ever been logically satisfactory. Of course they are "often quite confusing" or downright impotent, it is in the nature of the technique.

    If those gas tank tests prove anything at all, it's how stout those small block Chevy motors actually are... Although the "octane" thing is rather missing the point of what makes higher octane fuel produce more power. I'm probably going to botch this explanation, but it's not that has more energy in it, it's that it's able to be compressed more and therefore can have the ignition timed later in the stroke. Using fuel with too low an octane rating, in an engine that demands high octane fuel, can cause it to ignite before the engine's ignition is timed to spark and the valves are fully closed, which is what's called "knocking."
    So that engine wouldn't be able to make any performance gains from a higher octane fuel, assuming the mothballs did in fact raise the octane in the first place, because it's not set up to run a higher octane fuel. Putting a higher octane fuel will make no difference at all, it only works the other way around.
    I thought Jamie knew more about engines than that, to be honest.

    • @aaaabababa
      @aaaabababa หลายเดือนก่อน

      well, you aren't to far off with your explanation: Higher Octane means the fuel is more knock/self ignition resistant, so it won't self ignite itself at a point where it shouldn't, and while that doesn't automatically make more power, it means that you can run earlier (not later) ignition timing and make more power through that to a point, as well as run a higher compression ratio or if the engine has some sort of forced induction you can run more Boost, which will gain you a good chunk of Power.
      Nowadays all engines can sense Self Ignition/Knock and will adjust Ignition timing accordingly, so depending on how the engiens ECU is set up they can gain some pwoer from running for instance 98 Research Octane instead of 95, but an old Carbed V8 like that one definitely won't.

    • @aaaabababa
      @aaaabababa หลายเดือนก่อน

      and as a quick fun fact, the fist car that automatically made use of higher octane fuel was the Saab 900 Turbo¨in 1982, it hat a system that could sense Knock and adjusted Boost accordingly, through that the Engineers at Saab could not only enabled the possibility to use lower octane fuel but also meant that it made a good bit more power while using higher octane fuel and meant that they could bump up the compression ratio by quite a bit, making the engine more powerfull and use less fuel in the process.

      I just don't see it happening and it's not like you're gonna miss a huge helicopter scooping up water, nor would the spotter miss a person at the surface of the water from above. It's just not going to happen.

    27:25 sugar in the tank will fuck up the fueling system. just because it did nothin in their test does not prove anything. sugar wont dissolve in gas and over time it gets picked up by the fuel pump and clogs the lines and filters. and on fuel injected cars it clogs the injectors if the sugar gets pass the filters.
    on that tank the fuel line was on top but on some tanks its in the bottom on the middle where the fuel is gravity fed on the system and pump is either on the middle of the fuel system or is a mechanical one in the engine. on more modern cars the pump is in the tank and mounted on the top.
