By the early 2030s, we’ll have mass unemployment caused by enormously large data models, prompted for what character, what pixel comes next, capable of generating and re-generating anything that’s come before, across every known field of the arts and sciences. Instantly satisfying the every whim of those the tiny percentage left with resources enough to still have whims, but leaving everyone else with nothing of value left to trade for even the most basic of human needs.
If we’ll be somewhere in the middle, ugly bags of mostly water, endlessly condensing and expanding input and output, passing it from one prompt and model to another, the age of labor-saving devices and computational convenience finally forcing us all into 24/7 productivity with zero marginal creativity, essentially endless spell- and sanity-checkers for a system we’re just begging to reach singularity.
Or if we’ll be taking those first, tentative steps towards the actual Star Trek future, where 80% of the informational grunt-work, maybe manual as well, is taken over by the machines, freeing us to focus on the 20% of truly creative, innovative work that will push the human condition forward in a way never before possible.

Apple is only the Apple of today because Microsoft & BlackBerry sat on their success and didn't adopt fast enough. What we're seeing is another gravitational shift. Microsoft & others will launch themselves back to the front of our mindshare., viewed as the leader in tech, the king of the hill. It'll take Apple being reborn after a dramatic collapse for the company to realize this. Then and only then will they change. Right now they're laughing at AI like Steve Ballmer was laughing at the iPhone price tag in 2007.

    Two points:
    1) All that time you spent doing the research, taking the notes, and digesting all that info meant that you actually gained an understanding of the material that you won't get with an AI-instant production. Just as research has shown that people retain information better if they take notes by hand, AI making it too easy for people might mean they don't actually learn anything.
    2) There have been news stories about ChatGPT and other AI systems completely fabricating source material and their math being way off. Yes, the hope is they'll get better but how will we know unless we take a "trust but verify" approach to everything AI produces?
I'm not a Luddite on this, AI progress is super cool, but it does come with some caveats and potential issues

A pointy stick is a tool and cruch: Tool for poking; crutch because our limbs aren't made for fighting a bear or lion.
Fire: Tool for warmth; crutch since we rely on it to survive in harsh regions of the world.
Wheel: tool for rolling; crutch since we rely on it to move things we couldn't normally.

A.I. obviously improves efficiency, but at a cost of perspective. It can make you feel you can use it to speak with authority, but you remain unaware of the flaws that A.I. has on many technical subjects. AI is not like a calculator, where through machine or manual processes, both return identical answers. Technical topics are much more complex than a calculator, where subtle relationships and nuances can dramatically change conclusions. Is AI reliable, when AI returns a report that is 60% spot-on truth (that applies to things 90% of the time), but also contains 40% laughably incorrect errors that don’t apply to the conclusion at all? That is the dilemma novices don’t appreciate. The results of many AI generated reports on technical topics, is similar to saying the iPhone is a remarkable product that completely changed how people used phones, and that it was designed by Bill Gates.

So there is one big caveat here, AI needs a lot of computing power and we are very very close to reach the end of the massive expansion of computing power that we saw in the last maybe 50 years. For a lecture I once made a calculation of how much more powerful my then iPhone 5 was than the Computer that took Apollo 5 to the moon and I came up with a figure of somewhere between 5000 - 8000 times. That A7 chip had about 100 GFLOPS, the latest M2 has about 3-4 TFLOPS, that is 40x faster and we might see another 40x until the end, but certainly not another 1000x so unfortunately there is a limit of where this will go, unless we find a completely new technology for computing.

Can it prevent an at-risk teen from committing self-harm by addressing their concerns within the context of their age and social experiences?
I'm very sure it can give me my current bank account balance and reverse a fraudulent credit transaction, but I don't think we can trust it yet to do any of the former. I'm sure it can pretend and fail. But at what cost? We should be careful of what we ask it to do.
