The members of De La Soul are not related and met in high school.
Dave passed away just before De La Soul got the rights back to their music 😔 There was actually an episode of Teen Titans Go! where they help De La get their music back 😆
This came out during the height of the Afrocentric movement in hip hop. De la Soul were part of this great Afrocentric movement in the 1980’s where they brought back ideas started and popularized in the 1960’s with bands like Sly and the Family Stone, where people were talking about black positivity and black is beautiful. It continued in the 1970’s funk scene with bands like Parliament Funkadelic talking about Afro-futurism. If you notice, there are a lot of pendants with the image of Africa, gold chains due to the understanding that “the west” stole resources like gold from Africa. Afrika Bambaataa put together a hip hop collective called Zulu Nation with the intention of bringing up the new generation of hip hoppers. This included Q tip of A Tribe Called Quest and Dave of De La Soul.

It’s ironic that you want a gold chain while watching this since this was a time where there was beginning to be pushback on that, or more specifically materialism. The leather Africa pendants and African inspired clothing was the next trend. Kind of a return to what African Bambatta and the Zulu Nation were wearing a decade earlier than this video. It’s ironic that you want a gold chain while watching this since this was a time where there was beginning to be pushback on that, or more specifically materialism. The leather Africa pendants and African inspired clothing was the next trend. Kind of a return to what African Bambatta and the Zulu Nation were wearing a decade earlier than this video.
EDIT: Full disclosure, I had more than one fake rope chain. I picked mine up in Times Square for $10 😅. What can I say? I was a teen with empty pockets who also just wanted one of those chains.
