De La Soul changed hip hop and the way we listened to it. 3 Ft High and Rising was a game changer. I was a Punk when this came out and De La Soul along with Public Enemy were just as punk as anything I was listening to.
When this came out it was a whole new type of hip-hop sound and style. As for meaning it seems more like "be true to yourself" and don't front or conform. This was part of the more mellow and Jazzy hip-hop of the late 80s early 90s. Check out Digable Planets, Tribe Called Quest and The Roots
They are trying to say that they are birds of a different feather (from all the other rap styles) but they fly as one flock. The three of them together are one. Different from everyone else.
Dang Brad the video tells the story clearly about what they mean by saying It’s Me Myself and I It mean They as individuals will not conform to the stereotypical hip look of the 80’s The Kongo hats Humorous Gold Chains and the crossed arm B-Boy stance You see in the video the teacher trying to show them the "Correct" way to dress and act to be a Hip Hop artist B-Boy stance, Big Gold Chain and Sweat Suit But they are sitting there with Asymmetrical hair cuts and regular print shirts and their rap flow and lyrics weren’t typical of the other rap groups at the time Basically their saying this is who we are and we’re not going to adapt a Hip Hop costume just to sell our music We doing things they way we want even if no one likes it but Me Myself and I FYI the sample is Funkadelic’s Not Just Knee Deep Yo homie ya really gotta brush up on your Hip Hop and Black Music in General History Cuz it seems you have no clue about it😮 And ya wouldn’t have any Modern music i.e. Rock, Pop, Soul or Hip Hop without it because we ( Black Americans) created it in the beginning and then came everything else after
Essentially this song is about how DeLa came from Long Island which was the suburbs , so they didn't dress like the typical hip hop head from the city , note all of the extras have a similar style , Kangols, track suits , gold chains . Me Myself and I is basically this is me, who I am. This is 88 , you had De La , Public Enemy , NWA. , Eric B and Rakim , Epmd , Big Daddy Kane all hip hop but all different stylistically.
The Gatekeepers of Rap and style trying to tell them what is Rap and Hip Hop and u should check out The Black Sheep, Tribe Called Quest, Monie Love is also underated
When i heard this album I knew there was no stopping hip-hop. Until 3 ft high and rising the genre was going down a smilar path with less creativity. This was so unique and the sampling was crazy. They literally could take any song with funky groove or even a simple beat and turn it a masterpiece. RIP Dave Aka Trugoy
They're trying to say there was already a pier pressure for hip hop artists to conform and be proper Black as the new cliché would have it - and they're not rolling with it.
i give up- i pleaded with you to play a couple particular de la songs and u went the route of the most viewed 🤦♂️ instead- adieu brad after dark i'll just stick to the one with you and your wife

De La Soul blazed their own trail and didn't conform to the neighborhood or musical norms. LEGENDS.
Hell yeah, this is a banger right here!

Pure classic.
I saw Prince Paul do a dj set with comedy sketches for the Prince Among Theives album. Fun time. I have never caught De La Soul.
Familiar sample is “(Not Just) Knee Deep” by Funkadelic.

De La Soul has only recently been available for streaming because of lengthy licensing negotiations. Enjoy 😎
when hip hop was worth listening to 👍🏻
Herbaliser ft What What - The Blend. Another different, but amazing, sounding track from the early '90's.

Not gangster hip hop, it’s Hippy hip hop!😁

The single on vinyl is the only record I know with a hidden track. The sample is Parliament Kneedeep.
