I'm 53. So l know how ppl reacted. We all laughed. It was so unfair. He was frackin good actually and the world just spit on him. How many ppl doesn't sample like everything nowadays. Hugs from Sweden.
There's a reason this song was so big back then... a BANGER!! Regardless what anyone says..He made his mark into he music industry... with so many others. Music back then was just in another level!!
I graduated High School in 91, you have no Idea how popular this song was. In fact it was so popular it burned itself out. I still like it; oh, I listen to rock/country.
"Word to your Mother". This song was massive back in the day. You couldn't escape it, it was so huge but that's also where the backlash came. It was a while before Vanilla was appreciated again. I was a Rock dude back in the day but I loved this song, my band would cover this. I still remember all the lyrics to this day.
No that song was first performed by the band Wild Cherry. Also the songs title is 'Play That Funky Music'. That song has no relation to Vanilla Ice. The song came out in the 1970's.
Bruh, First, you are by far the most entertaining, enjoyable person doing these reviews. Keep it up. Second, MTV was the first time I heard this. Signed, 61 year old Caucasian man.
@ he just had to turn on the radio or watch a TV show or a movie or step into any club or any dance whatsoever wether its homecoming or a wedding a or any other place that plays music and you would hear that song
Man,I just love your reactions. Good stuff! This song came out right around the time I was graduating from high school. I remember it was played on my senior class’ Grad Night on a cruise around SF Bay, where a bunch of us were doing the running man dance (don’t laugh, it was really big back then. The song was a huge hit. Most of us that lived through that time can still sing all the words. Anyway, keep up the great reaction videos.
Love your animated expressions and enthusiasm - this indeed was a bangin' tune back in the day. Still sounds good. Didja notice the 5.0 on the side of the white convertible? that was a Mustang 5.0, hot car back then
Bro this dude is super rich, he's living off royalties. The album sold almost 10 million copies worldwide. But he's done other things including having a 9 year run on the DIY Network with his show The Vanilla Ice Project. It ended in 2019.
Great reaction. It's impossible not to move when you hear this song. He took the hook from the Queen song "Under Pressure" but in the end it was settled and we can all still enjoy this great song.
Vanilla Ice made a movie called Cool As Ice. Saw him at a supercross race years ago. They had a celebrity race that he raced in that was in between the pro races.
"We are in the hood of TH-cam here." 😂❤ I saw this man live in '08/'09 and he was in his prime. He had the contracting business and the show, he was very fit, plus he was touring, so he was stupid excited about life -- his energy was huge, even though he was only doing a small-city outdoor gig for maybe 500 people. He looked confused for a split second about how hard the crowd went when he started, then he doubled our energy. During the Ninja Turtle Rap my friend started a successful mosh pit. He shook his head at that, but with a smile. He looked choked up at the end, when the crowd was cheering at his success and shouting praises. I was like: dang what a nice dude, good for him. It's always heartwarming to see one of the good guys winning, eh.
I was 19 when this dropped. Being a hip hop head I could tell he wasn't a black dude but that didn't matter. This was a massive joint in the summer of 1990 and its still a timeless classic.

To be fair, back then, things were quite different. The young kids understood that anybody who would name themselves Vanilla Ice was a dead giveaway, lol.
The bass like is from Queen/Bowie "under pressure," you should check it out. He went broke. Suge Knight went to his hotel room, held him upside down by his ankle over the railing & forced him to sign over the rights to ice ice baby or they were going to take him out. He went into hiding until Suge went to jail then told the story on 60 mins. This song sold more than Michael Jackson thriller making it the most sold album of all time. I'm shocked you've never heard it. It's played all the time. When it came out it was on the radio 3 times every hour, at every house party, I even memorized the dance moves to it with a buddy & we'd break it out at parties. Skinny girls are way more attractive. No big boots Judy's, skinny Minnies only. This song was a crossover that was played both on urban stations & pop.
I remember when this came out, it was playing everywhere. It was just so fun! 😹 Although I think Ninja Rap will always be my favorite Vanilla Ice song.
Boogie!!!!! MY man! This was my intro to rap (being white and about 10 when this came out); I had the tape, posters, my first concert. Watching you eat this up brings me so much joy. THANK YOU!
He was also 16(?) when he wrote this. MTV was on at my house as soon as i got home from school. The VHS hooked up to record my favorite videos from Total Request Live. Celebrity Death Match was an awesome show too.
You know I can't remember what I thought about the Artist. My first thought about the song however was this rocks!!! It rocked its way across the USA and the World. In the US it was the theme of Every school dance in the country. Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer were the coolest cats on the market.❤ *I have to add we had a dance routine for a lot of the songs back then. It was a fun time to go clubbing.
When I lived in Fort Myers, Fl in the 90s .... Rob was racing jet ski's at Fort Myers beach , we yelled out A1 A ... and Rob yelled back ... Beach front Avenue 😊lol
He got sued by Queen and David Bowie for sampling this without permission. He kept insisting it was a coincidence, then finally admitted that it was sampled. The song is "Under Pressure" by Queen and David Bowie. in case you want to check it out.
When I heard this song when I was a kid, what color he is wasn't a thought in my head. I just liked it. Also had no idea that he sampled this song from Under Pressure- Queen ft. David Bowie. Which that song is fire to. If you've not heard it check it out.
Listen, the song hits. The song, on its own, hits. Would it hit this well without the "Under Pressure" bassline? Nope. He should've gave Queen and Bowie credit from the get go.
When this dropped.. I remember going to play a soccer game on a Saturday. Dallas had a a couple rock channels, and maybe 3 radio channels that played pop/ or rap Every channel had this song playing You changed the channel and it was just a different part of the song Lol
Man I remember when this came out, I had just moved to FL with my parents and was in my freshman year of HS. I was one of 2 white kids that went to an 9% Latino, 90% Black high school (reppin Riviera Beach 😆). Was a culture shock for sure, but glad it went that way, and yeah I got stories hah. Whole reason I bring all that up because I can't hear this song without remembering all the kids on my bus singing this when it was hot, but replaced the word "vanilla" with "chocolate". And it worked too heh. That song was a beast of it's time even if it's a little corny looking back. EVERYONE was on it. 😎

Back in the day we heard/ watched a lot of our music first on MTV. Then it came on the radio, so we already knew what the artist looked like.
Back when mtv was about the music... now it's all pregnant teens and more idiocracy
For many it was a guilty pleasure (after the initial hype, haters took over). But EVERY time I hear it I enjoy it so much!
There's a reason this song was so big back then... a BANGER!! Regardless what anyone says..He made his mark into he music industry... with so many others. Music back then was just in another level!!
Exactly!!
I’m 50 and does my heart A LOT of good to see you younger cats dig any old school hip hop. We was happy about it back then and not mublin’ … feel me?

The first ever rap song to top the Billboard Hot 100 at #1 was Vanilla Ice's "Ice Ice Baby" in 1990.
Well now you have to watch Jim Carrey impersonating Ice on In Living Color.
Yesssss😂😂
That’s the first thing I thought when the video started😂
th-cam.com/video/fdtKBe7sM48/w-d-xo.html
Ice was honored that Jim Carrey even knew who he was.
