So there are actually a group of African Jews known as Beta Israel in Ethiopia. Their own oral tradition connects them to one of the twelve tribes of Israel - specifically Tribe of Dan. You've probably heard of Samson, who was super strong until his hair was cut. He was from the Tribe of Dan. They are one of the 10 lost tribes that were exiled by the Assyrians. If true then that Tribe would have gone south and mixed with the local population but keeping their religious identity. In 1977 Israeli courts declared they were jews who deserved the Law of Return that was established to give automatic citizenship to jews worldwide to give them a safe home. This was done due to civil war in Ethiopia, at the time, so Israel asked the US to help conduct a massive military operation to evacuate black jews in the country back to Israel.
