Thank you for doing this. I can’t believe how many people think that because the person who pinned the image says it is public domain, that it is actually public domain! I also can’t believe how many digitals on Etsy are copyright images that don’t belong to the seller! Reverse search has stopped me paying good money for these images. People, you don’t have the right to use them, even though you have paid for them! Listen to the lady! Check that image thoroughly before using!
How could i miss this thumbnail !! What a great warning, seems each time i bring up copyright everyone defends their right to "personal use" or "if now one knows it wont hurt them" kinda comments. Thank you so much for making this video. There are many artists that advocate using pinterest to do art studies, but you are right. The images may not be copyrightfree. And not every artist want their art on pinterest, and not everyone wants their art being copied. And also AI art is really a smarter pinterest, since Pinterest also may have stolen content.

@@SusanTaylorBrown No problem! Most artists advocate for using pinterest (even professionals and influencers) but not speaking about the copyright issues on there. Im very sure there are some patreon only content there as well, and so genuinely, seeing AI art on pinterest is genuinely better than artists whose posts have "Do not reposts"

Hi Susan, your series on free to use images is excellent, a great resource! Thankyou for explaining clearly for those who are new to junk journalling or may not understand how copyright works! A well needed video and yes you definitely should get an elephant stamp along with your gold 🌟
I have four questions,
1. Can I just go on google and type not copyrighted photos and use them?
2. What if I go to the super market and buy a tree top apple juice and then take a pic and trace it on my ipad and then make it into stickers? But then I go to google and search for tree top apple juice drawings, and see that almost everyone draws the same exact! Can I still draw it and sell it, or no?
3. Can I trace someone's drawing as simple as a just a water cup but add some eyes and mouth on it, would it still count as copying someone else drawing?
4. And if a photos doesn't have the copyrighted sign at the bottom, can I just use it?

Thank you for sharing this important information. I have seen way too many people who did this in my country. They just printed pictures from Pinterest and use them without minding the copyright issues. Some of them even teach others how to save pictures from Pinterest. This bugs me so much.

I came here after watching a DYI memo pad video using images on Pinterest which are mostly pinned from Etsy. Only myself and one other commenter there ever mentioned about this topic; quite saddening. I was looking for tutorials on how to make memo pads with my own designs and encountered that video. A lot of people don't know about copyright or just don't care. I feel for the artists. I agree that Pinterest is for inspiration and most of the images there are not free to use. We can always check the links and support the artists.

Hi Susan, thanks for your video and cheers to a fellow artist. I was aware of Pinterest's mixture of copyright material and non. I've never used a Pinterest picture for anything other than ideas for oils. From a business perspective the copyright ambiguity is the silliest thing I've ever heard. A simple: Copyright © 2023 - John Doe - All Rights Reserved. ... is all they have to add, internally to the pic or externally on the posting - which astonishes me, why is this a passion of yours? If I leave my car on the curb with keys in and door open and it gets stolen in the night should I call you and plead my losses? Don't you think the contributors have any responsibility? You said: "It's up to [us] to dig and find if it's copyright." I don't get it. Have a good day.
I agree it’s all a mess. This was a passion of mine when I was creating digital paper kits, which I no longer do. It was a response to a lot of questions I got from people who wanted to just use any images they found online and sell them. I was fairly new to doing videos when I made this and it was too long and chatty. 🤪 I no longer want to wade into this battlefield.

If we take pics from pinterest and use in our work..so it is possible that TH-cam will give as notification of copyright or not ??
I don’t know that TH-cam will recognize and comment on. I think they do cut strikes on music only but the artist went find things trouble. It’s just better to be safe and smart.

Pinterest gives me an option to download many of the pictures I like. I'm not a visual artist, I just want some beautiful images to use for non monetized music imagery. And I get the feeling that most of the beef is coming from like for like artist who resent eachother for using concepts or ideas without giving due credit or payment to their peers. I really don't know what to think. It seems like the system is flawed for the original artist but for people like myself it seems to favour me just DL an image and using it for a music video for instance? I'm uncertain

I am seeing a lot of mid-century vintage images being sold digitally on etsy for journal. Wrapping paper, postcards, greeting cards, etc. Are these copyright free? Where do you find these images? Do you need to own the physical item? I have done some reverses searching and it seems like a very grey area to me. Any information on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Unless Pinterest, you’re probably better off, putting images into tin eye for reverse image search and see if you can find out who owns them.

People cry about AIs for the same reason that arts can as well be found in Google and used as fuel for machine learning.
Basically, ANYTHING that is posted on internet, whether it's public or paid-for-buy, can be downloaded via any browser default option "Save Image"/"Copy Image"
Sueing only Pinterest here is illogical in that matter, since the "check source" rule can be applied to any site you found an image on.
And billions of people are using internet these days, you can't track anyone downloading images for personal use, moreso, not every people really use it publicly and get caught only If they try to claim or resell the art, no one can even tell you If your art been fed to same AI for example, or not.
Even If you ban image download option, PrtSc exists and in worst case, desperate ppl will just redraw it on paper. All for the sake of "personal use"
People should focus on real thieves, not the people who genuinely use it in 5-20 ppl small group of non-artists and it does not gets anywhere

Could a teacher use these photos/images as an example in a classroom setting - where you are not directly making a "copy" of it; but you are using it as a teaching tool... would that be permissible? Such as in the case of an overhead projector?
I would like to buy a public domain poem I found on Pinterest. I like the way the poem is presented/ painted / photoshopped. There is no link associated with it. I am not interested in selling it. Can I take a picture of it for my own personal use in my home?

How to Pinterest image free to use on TH-cam?
What if I'm using it in a presentation to suggest/have a visual image of a character. No sale, no commercial use. I do the reverse search and I find NO info on who created it, yet I see it used in videos etc. I WANT to use that image, it's perfect for what I need. WHY do they make it so difficult (Pinterest or the artist for that matter) to FIND them?????? Thanks! You think they would make it easier for people to make $$$ from their art. It seems lame to me...and then put people Like me in question as to whether or not I can use it.

Thanks for this video. can anyone tell me: can you rip up a vintage book, and use the images in journals, then sell the journal with those images. Even if its not vintage, even if its modern. Can you do this? I have hundred's of vintage books, and post cards that I paid for, and want to rip up. I doubt I will ever sell anything I make but I need to find out this answer and cant get it anywhere. Some of the images are from art books of famous painting. I just need to know the rules on this.
Also, if you pay for images on say, Etsy. Can you then use the in a journal and sell that journal?
