Despite the few inaccuracies, I found the breakdown of the footage to be compelling. The compliments below without the character disdain, help the viewer with the corrections. The parachutes were first used by the observation baloonists earlier in the war. I think the pilots needed them, but they were very heavy, and in many cases a pilot wounded or in a death spiral could not deploy.
Extra ordinary research. I had to do almost 40 years to find out about the WW2 Resistance Group and it German opponent special forces units. To my surprise I found film footage of the Group and German POWs. Well done👍
53:15 Jasta 11 had existed since 1916 but pilots were constantly coming and going, they had not all fought together since 1916. Many came over from other Jastas or Bomber/Observation squadrons, and many would leave to command other Jastas. The personnel picture changed from month to month.
Hans Schultz flew with Jasta 18, not part of the Richthofen Geschwader. The aircraft here attributed to him was flown by Hermann Goering, and later by Ernst Udet.
50:15 I am not certain but I do not think that is the Venezuelan Baldo Meyer in the center, that should be Karl Bodenschatz, the adjutant (black moustache)
It was the Fokker E.V (E. for Ein, a single wing) when they experienced wing failures (not for the first time) due to Fokker's laxity over production quality control. It was renamed D.VIII only after Rheinhold Platz demonstrated that there was nothing fundamentally wrong with his wing structure.
Apparently Mr. Permann is one of those "experts" (and unfortunately there are many) who think that Fokker's ghost written biography is a true and accurate account, and forms their primary source..
Stephanie! ... I can recommend TWO books for you, and I own BOTH of them. I have read them many times! The first one is by Anthony Fokker himself! It's called : Flying Dutchman The Life of Fokker ... written by: Anthony H. G. Fokker! The 2nd is: Fokker: The Creative Years by A R Weyl. If you read both, you will be able to surmise what he was all about. I only say THAT as in his own book, Fokker tends to exaggerate a bit and is given to bits of hyperbole .. but .. In Weyl's book, Weyl just lays out the FACTS as they were and as he researched. Between the two books you will have a complete understanding on the what, why, where, and how of Anthony Fokker! Neither is a boring read either! ENJOY!!!
Hi a got a question ??, its true that the veterans of the Jasta11 after the war made reunion meeting of pilots and Goering was not invited??? Why , Thanks
You got it reversed at 19:44, first you get the ribbon/iron cross 2nd class, then you get the pin on medal, iron cross 1st class. The pin on medal is the higher award.
As significant persons are pointed out in this photo or that, the narrator fails to see a who's who of others and as someone else mentions, there are many mistakes.
Just over 5 minutes in and already see issues with accuracy here. Parachutes began to be issued in 1917, not 1918. And in August of 1918, Heinrich Gontermann had been dead for almost a year. What's up with the narrator?? EDIT: Poor and often inaccurate narration. Great video.
Fokker D.vIII wing was plywood covered, no fabric. Its finish was stained green & brown on top, mauve & blue bottom then matt varnished. It was NOT fabric. Mistake like that makes me doubt the historical credibility of the narrator.
Can anyone help me with this Fokker guy? My 4 year old son has given me some insight, but I need more validation he's Fokker reincarnated?????? Please. He has dreams about "spin" he said he's like a villain but he kills bad guys. All kinds of things including absolutely getting pissed at the name Anthony and insist Fokker. Although that's not his name, when I mention Anthony Fokker is when he explodes. He also demands fish sticks. He also somewhat looks like Fokker. There's a lot of specific things, I'm just learning. Thanks!
Outstanding historical footage! .. but .. for for god sakes, it's pronounced FAH-KER, not Foe-ker! Anthony Fokker was Dutch and his last name has TWO K's which make the O short, like in the word October. Drives me nuts whenever I hear someone say Foe-ker. It's pronounced Faw-ker! Otherwise, wonderful, even with the misinformation here and there ...
bullshit my friend it's pronounced focker like fucker but with a short o and you're theory with the two F's is as bullshit as your foeker /fawker thing the o is short because there are two k's
Actually my "friend", that was a typo! I had meant to type two K's, not two F's, and had you taken the time to read it a little more carefully, you would have seen what I intended. I have made the appropriate correction. That said, it is still pronounced FAH-KER, not FOE-KER, regardless of whatever rules might apply based on language. I think we can both agree on that! Absolutely no need for hostilities here. BEST!
Rob, I think the narrator meant 200 kph, not mph. He makes a few mistakes such as this during the film. 110 hp is not out of the ballpark for a Oberursel UR.II powerplant.
Thanks Mark, I'm not disputing the hp rating. In fact most of those WW I lumps were underrated. Guy building flying replicas these days are finding out that 100 hp ain't what it used to be. Respect.
+markpyruz , I appreciate your reply on my behalf. I am a historical nerd but certainly nothing of an expert on WWI. I did my best to present the info I had on the video and as you all can agree, I got a lot of the details wrong. I encourage everyone to post the corrections - there will be dozens. That's the best way for all of us to learn. I am actually reading the comments in order to sharpen my presentation - the last thing I want to do is give out bad information, sincerely. I didn't decide to post this - its a presentation that we give out for our retired workforce of museum volunteers. The old gents like aviation history so we put together these talks once a month. Please help me/us do a better job and post all corrections. I'll ask Ron to take this video down until I can make the corrections y'all can provide. Many thanks, Gordon

I swear if that guy asks the date one more time...
Incredible, thank you for posting!
Extra ordinary research. I had to do almost 40 years to find out about the WW2 Resistance Group and it German opponent special forces units.

Well done👍
What was the date on that?
53:15 Jasta 11 had existed since 1916 but pilots were constantly coming and going, they had not all fought together since 1916. Many came over from other Jastas or Bomber/Observation squadrons, and many would leave to command other Jastas. The personnel picture changed from month to month.
Pity the picture became so cropped after a while - missing half of people's faces etc.
53:47 There is NO evidence that Richthofen ever 'fell in love with his nurse' when he was in the hospital in July-August 1917

Goering's "cut-down" cockpit is actually on the other (left) side of the a/c.
Apparently Mr. Permann is one of those "experts" (and unfortunately there are many) who think that Fokker's ghost written biography is a true and accurate account, and forms their primary source..
Thanks for great film. Beautifull.
And his name is not "Foker" is is "focker" (close to the the RC acronym relating to Henry VIII "Fortification Under the Crown of the King"
Any recommendations for learning the most I can about Fokker?
Stephanie! ... I can recommend TWO books for you, and I own BOTH of them. I have read them many times! The first one is by Anthony Fokker himself! Excellent!! Thank you! I will read to my hearts content, with a un-bias view. Thank you.
the top 1/8 th of the video is cut off, is there somewhere to view the whole video ? thanks, great video
sparky obrian Is it? How long do you see it running for. We have 1:05:33 Thanks
1:05:33, but the top of the video is chopped off
Hi a got a question ??, its true that the veterans of the Jasta11 after the war made reunion meeting of pilots and Goering was not invited??? Why , Thanks
43:45 Voss wound up with 48 victories, not 42.
His last epic dog-fight with 56 Sqn is, IMHO, arguably the greatest single aerial combat of all time. 👍
You got it reversed at 19:44, first you get the ribbon/iron cross 2nd class, then you get the pin on medal, iron cross 1st class. The pin on medal is the higher award.
what happened to the top of the film?????????????????
As significant persons are pointed out in this photo or that, the narrator fails to see a who's who of others and as someone else mentions, there are many mistakes.
Neckel was not the last pilot awarded the PLM, Degelow was.
It is not the iron class .It is Pour le Merite or the Blue Max.You should do your homework before setting up as an expert
I bet he thinks that the DVII was designed by Antony Fokker...
Too bad the video camera was zoomed into the screen so all we see is the center. His narrative describes many things we can't see. Frustrating.
Awesome!
Wolfchen died in May 1918
OK, so I am a grammar nerd. Pronounce the names of people and places as spoken not with simplified frontier sub-English phonetics.
Weird accoustics, inside that cathedral. Why do it THERE? Sadism?

Allied airmen in the First World War were NEVER issued parachutes.
No the Generals thought that at the first sight of trouble they would jump out! And yes many , many mistakes in the film.
Fokker D.vIII wing was plywood covered, no fabric. Its finish was stained green & brown on top, mauve & blue bottom then matt varnished. It was NOT fabric. Mistake like that makes me doubt the historical credibility of the narrator.
Nonsense, just the upper leading edge.
That would be true if you had written D.VII, but I misread your DvIII. Sorry about that. The E.V / D. VIII was ply covered as you said.
Can anyone help me with this Fokker guy? My 4 year old son has given me some insight, but I need more validation he's Fokker reincarnated?????? Please. Interesting, my son pronounced it right, I thout he was saying a swear word at first and here I am now learning about a possible past life?. .
This guy does not have a clue about what he is talking about!!!!
I stopped watching this after 12 minutes. So much of this information is bogus. Fokker D VIII going 200 mph with that thick wing and 110 HP. Bullshit.
Rob, I think the narrator meant 200 kph, not mph. He makes a few mistakes such as this during the film. 110 hp is not out of the ballpark for a Oberursel UR.II powerplant.

11O hp in the E.V and D.VIII, 145 hp in the D.VIIIe, 200hp Goebel in the intended but not produced D.VIIIg.
200 mph only in this man's dreams....
