  • Apple released the new M4 iPad Pro this week, and an all-new 13-inch iPad Air. What should organists buy for reading sheet music?
This video is revised and provides more accurate information.
Apple Pencil: you should definitely get this if you want to take notes on your scores; older iPad Pros used the Apple Pencil (2nd Generation), but the new iPad Pro and iPar Air require the Apple Pencil Pro.

Very useful advice. I’ve tried using my seventh generation iPad with scanned scores but it’s too small to read. The larger screen Pros are far too expensive for only using for music. The prices here in Canada are similar to yours in Australia. Now that I know what to look for it sounds like a refurbished M1 or better would be adequate. Thanks for your insight and research.

Hi Titus, thanks for the revised video. I’ve ordered an iPad Air, and it should arrive next week. I don’t know how the new Landscape front camera will go - if it will be low enough when viewing in portrait. Let’s see.

Good point, the cameras are landscape now. I think it should still be fine. I only ever had trouble when the camera was at the bottom

In the past, when my battery no longer lasts a day, I have had it replaced with a 3rd party one because it was a lot cheaper than going to Apple. Every time, however, the new battery never lasted as long as an Apple battery and then I discovered the 3rd party ones didn’t have the same charging capacity as the Apple ones. Last year, my 2020 iPad Pro was only lasting a few hours so I decided to get a new battery from Apple and pay a bit more. Imagine my surprise when Apple told me that they no longer replace iPad batteries but for the cost of a new battery ($200), they would completely replace my iPad with a new one (same model and size). So now I have a brand new 2020 Pro for $200 so won’t be updating for a few more years.

Hi Titus - can you help us understand why you are so convinced the new 12.9" iPad Air will support face gesture page turning in forScore? My understanding from forScore is that this feature (only accessible on forScore Pro) requires a true depth front facing camera - and one of the key differences between the new iPad Pro and iPad Air is that the former does have a true depth front facing camera whilst the latter does not. (Hence facial recognition possible on the Pro, whereas its touch recognition on the Air). This is really key for a lot of us who would really value this feature on a 12.9' screen - but cannot justify the iPad Pro price - whereas if it really is going to work on an iPad Air there is at last a more cost effective option. Please clarify!! Many thanks Chris

Hi Chris, I was told by someone that they can page-turn on their iPad Air. So I'm guessing the true depth feature is not essential to the page turns, it's more of a FaceID technology.
I need confirmation though on this.
If you want to try, Apple does always have a no-fault returns policy, so you could try the feature to confirm it works.

I'm of an age where I really like large text. If I pinch and zoom to see my music better, does forScore adjust the music to another page? Or do I need to enlarge the music before scanning? This was a great instruction on how to use the iPad for music. Thank you!

Forscore can crop the borders off pages if you want it to, even after you've scanned them in. It works quite well and zooms the finished result in.
You can also pinch and zoom to see the music better, but then you'd have to zoom out to conveniently turn the page.

How do you get the sheet music on to the device? Is special software required?

    • @georgefloros501

Most musicians use forscore, however u]you could use other software as well

In the case where you have a paper score, you can use the scan function that is in Forscore (under the folder icon). No other software is needed. You can save the scan as a file using the name that you provide. The file format is pdf.

If you have a Mac/iPhone, you can use Airdrop. And you can also just get PDFs on the iPad directly from online

@@peporganthanks for your thoughts. I’m a fellow organist and have been using the iPad for quite a few years now. Having your whole organ library to hand is fantastic, especially when a bride is running late.
Just upgraded mine to the new nano-texture as sometimes the lighting in the churches I play at can be troublesome. No screen protector for me this time around.

@@peteratkinson8957it works so much better and no phantom page turns have occurred. I also got the nano screen version. This has been a revelation as the lights in the church I play at are quite bright and the organ has a window that the sun comes through. Great upgrade and investment for me.
