    At what point in the process is he baking the urushi on? Is he doing it while he is tempering after heat treatment? Beautiful knives not to mention their longevity will increase with the urushi coating!

      After tempering and distorting, the hot blade is coated with lacquer.
      The Burned Urushi finish has a rust inhibiting effect and besides that, as you guessed it, it prolongs the life of the blade. It's a traditional and yet very unique technique!
