Great vid Geebz, I'm surprised you haven't done anything on The Black Dahlia Murder. I'd be so interested in seeing a composers explanations/take on how the musicality and vocals intertwine. If you're interested, Death Panorama from their 2009 Album Deflorate is a 2 minute banger. Keep up the good work.
Holographic Universe is my favorite album from them. It was the last album with Christian on vocals. I always appreciated his range of clean to harsh vocals.
Christian has one of the most versatile voices in metal. I loved both his cleans and his growls.
bar far their best, songs were super super colorful and interesting, including the song Holographic Universe.
Love this album. As good as their new vocalists are, I miss Christian in the band.

Holographic Universe is their clear standout, album wise, but this is a part 2 of a 3 album concept trilogy and im digging it so far.
Symmetric in Design was such an amazing find for little 19 year old me when it came out. It was back in the latter days of record stores I would peruse the metal section all the time. This album was there with a sticker saying "For fans of In Flames and Soilwork" and I was like "I like both those bands!". Such a crazy time looking back on it. They could have been awful but there was very little way to know if I hadnt heard them before. Now I can just listen on youtube or spotify
Per is the #1 underrated metal guitarist. If he was in a metalcore or djenty band he would be a household name.

to clarify, he left (or rather was sent off when he didnt accept) BECAUSE they wanted to intoduce a second vocalist anyway. Total Diva situation
@@WorldMechanicalmy understanding is that he didn’t want to tour and he was hard to work with so they kicked him out. To my knowledge he hasn’t toured with any of the bands he’s been in since.

Yay Scar Symmetry! I used to listen to them a ton awhile ago. I loved their first four albums so much and then I kind of stopped paying attention to them. I listened to their new album over the weekend and I think it slaps pretty hard. Best work since 2009 in my humble, "pure listener", opinion.
This band is one of my all-time favorites. They are masters at mixing in both growls/screams and cleans. I just love how they are so aggressive one seconed, then the tone changes to a more "happy" sound. But those usually coinside with what is going on in the story since its a trilogy of albums telling a story. Phase I told about the rise of AI/neohumans and the fall of mankind. Phase II picks up and talks about humanities fight against the neohumans, so there are a lot of "hopeful" sounding moments that make you want to "rise up". Those choruses really make me feel on top of the world, like nothing can stop me. They are extremely powerful to me. Their first 3 albums had a different vocalist who did both growls and cleans. He's an amazing singer, but I also love this new duo. Phase II is a wonderful album. Havent stopped listening to it since its release.
I love the tone change from Overworld to Altergeist, you can tell that after some good news and the super hopeful chorus in Overworld the story is getting darker again and the harmonies in Altergeist are so rich it really draws you into that world

Per plays bass on this album; on such tracks as Scorched Quadrant and Chrononautilus the bass is phenomenal!
Yea the bass stands out quite a bit on the 1st 2 singles. This 3rd single was ok but didn’t do it for me.
@@DM72513 I personally really enjoyed Overworld, perhaps even more so than the first two tracks (which I also thoroughly liked, it should be said). Different strokes for different folks, of course; which track on the album is your favorite? :)
Per played the bass on this album. Also he used a synth pedal (boss sy-1) on some of his leads so you can hear both the guitar and a bit of synth blended into them. The album is incredible and so is the rest of their catalog.
Per Nilsson is also the guitar player in the swedish progressive rock band Kaipa. Check the last album Urskog in 2022 from Kaipa. The song Wilderness Excursion.
"Slaves to the Subliminal" is the one that hooked me ages ago... still holds up and has the prefect balance of heavy/pop chorus imo.

That darker chord at the end is to link to the next track which is a darker chapter in the story. This is all a giant story that is being told since the previous album, and should finish with the next (presumably in 2032 lmao)

I'm struggling to find much that really stands out on the new album.
they've lost the songwriting spark and many things just feel like rehashed ideas now but not as strong.
My favourite track, hands down, is "Holographic Universe", closely followed by "Astronomicon" and "The Anomaly". Funny enough, those are all quite different I think. Great band with hardly any weak songs!

I have a hard time believing "phase 1" came out almost a decade ago now, as it really only feels like 4-5 years.
BTW, I believe the name "Per" is pronounced as "pear/pair". Also, recently I found out that Per is actually a member of the MENSA, society which I found quite interesting.
I recently started listening to Scar Symmetry too. Occasionally, I'll check out Nuclear Blast videos to see what's up. Never heard SS before but someone in the comments mentioned they still listened to the album Holographic Universe so I figured it must be good. Checked out the track "Timewave Zero" and fell in love. Interestingly, that was the last album with their previous singer. He did *amazing* clean vocals AND growls. When they fired him they had to replace him with TWO singers. lol. I kinda wish he still did vocals because wow! what a set of pipes on that guy.
If you want more of the original vocalist, check out Solution .45, the band he joined right after he was booted from Scar Symmetry...they apparently have a new album in the works
he still does vocals for Solution .45 and Miseration. Solution .45 is more of a melo death band and miseration is a lot more aggressive death metal. From solution .45 i like the first album most

For the background arpeggio sequence, it's actually guitar that's been run through a neural dsp plugin to transform it into a synth.
Per is amazing, I’m a rhythm guitarist, but started looking more into melodies in flames helped me learn to noodle some leads stuff, but when I got into this band, Omg , it’s just so good. I look more now how to structure a song and give way to vocals instead of wanking on the guitar. Lol. 😂

Fantastic band to take a deep dive on. Personally, I believe their best albums are Holographic Universe, The Unseen Empire, and The Singularity (Phase 1: Neohumanity). This newest album is good, but not in the same league as those previous three albums if you ask me.
I would also like to recommend something very different: "Rainmen" by the band AtomA.
Their music is a quite unique mix of prog rock, metal and ambient music. And I think they're highly underappreciated.
It just came to mind because Scar Symmetry's original vocalist Christian Älvestam appeared on their first (and so far only album) on guitar and also harsh vocals on the title track ("Skylight", which is also great).

I've got the PERFECT twice-baked session idea: play "Company Accepted" (live version from ProgSpace) and "Magnets" by Omnerod!! What a band! Very Devin Townsend-esque - I even like them better than Devin! Omnerod absolutely has potential, and they're just getting started and finding their sound(s)!

My only complaint of this type of "reaction" is that I personally haven't heard this song. So when you talk before playing the song, it doesn't do much for me. But I am familiar with Scar Symmetry, and the song Illuminoid Dream Sequence has one of my favorite riffs of all time :)
