The Taro Tsujimoto story will always be one of the best Sabres stories to exists! Yutaka Fukufuji is the goalie that was the First Japanese-Born player to play in the NHL, but players like Paul Kariya and Devin Setoguchi were some of the first with Japanese heritage to be well known in the league
That jersey (dubbed the "Turdburger") adequately sums up the past decade for sure. But the light seems to be at the end of the tunnel with this past season when they seemingly turned a page.
The Buffalo Sabres can be summed up in that Simpsons clip where homer rebuilds Flanders house. Their fans can be summed up by Ned Flanders reaction to that.
Nice vid as always! Hoping for anything fun this year. Moving in the right direction. It’s always tedious, but I agree with the steady build. Summer of 2011 signing a bunch of guys to attempt to make a playoff team and Frankenstein them into a cup contender did not work. Plus going out and signing Hall to try to prove to Jack that the team would get him players to play with was a mess. When this team tied the record for losses they had 80 mil on the ice. Next season they dress just over 50 mil and produce the most fun team to watch in years. I trust in Adams. In a few years this could be a great team.
In the UK we have had a limited exposure to NHL. Despite that, I was first exposed in the 90/91 season as an 11 year old, and fell in love with the game....and the Penguins (especially Lemieux......yes I'm a glory hound there) I have always followed the Penguins since, through the many good times, but equally the not so good (late 90's /early 2000's), although I was always pulled to the Sabres too. Hasek was an absolute beast and Mogilny was someone I held in as much esteem as Jagr/Francis/Lemieux. It's been so depressing seeing the decline in the last decade...I really hope they can bounce back and do something, I sat in with a bunch of Sabres fans in Toronto 2004 (Sabres won) and they were some of the nicest people I have ever met (despite being New York staters haha), their fans definitely deserve some kind of success.
Haha Buffalo is very different than the other end of the state. More of a “town” feel up here. I almost forget what state it is. In size comparison that’s like London UK and Scunthorpe UK
How were you Able to follow the game? Tv, magazines etc? I’d imagine even getting news was hard. I lived in a rural town in Florida and it was tough to get news
Haven't worn my Mika Noronen Amerks jersey in some time. He looked great in Rochester and while it was an open goal is the only Sabre goaltender to be credited with a goal, plus there was the infamous crossbar goal when he used his water bottle to "clean" the glass for the goal judge after a crossbar hit was declared a goal. Too bad he didn't work out at the NHL level.
It's twenty years later and I still wish Rob Ray had retired a Sabre instead of going for a cup of coffee in Ottawa. It would have been so cool to have a perfect 1-team career on his hockeydb. I really liked Rob, he played with heart and grit and was a funny, crazy guy.
Excellent report ! The Sabres for several decades were one of the toughest home teams in the league . And that's from Bobby Clarke , Serge Savard , Kirk Muller and Boston Legend Cam Neely. These guys are in the know ! The lost of The Auditorium , The Boston Garden , The Chicago Stadium, The Spectrum , Detroit's Olympia stadium and The Montreal Forum brough an end to wonderful time in the history of the NHL.
Remember back before Rene Robert was a Sabre and playing for The Phoenix Roadrunners In The WHL I, was happy to see him make it with the Sabres, and then Got to see him play again when I, got to come up to Vancouver and watch the Canucks and Sabres in the playoffs. Same series when Tiger Williams KO'D Scotty Bowman with a little Chop to The Temple.
Love that logo. Would appreciate a Ramsay video, well any players would do really. I'd be mildly optimistic if I was a Sabres fan but it will get better though, it shouldn't be able to get worse atleast.
I believe buffalo will surprise everyone this year. Granato is a great coach he's hockey lore here in Minnesota and Wisconsin I look for buffalo to make the playoffs this year yep I said it Denny from Minnesota
The Sabres were expected to be historically bad last season. They weren’t. They will overachieve again this year and make a playoff push. Insane amount of young talent coming through the pipeline.
What's with not exploring the markets of players available in Poland and Hungary right at this moment?! Many, many years ago an odd player used to get picked up from Poland but not any more! There's good or decent players from Poland at least who can compete in North America even Hungarian players get a chance of a look see! These two countries are the major holes in the European hockey export markets to North America and the NHL right now, even in Olympic play! Any thoughts!
Fun facts. Yutaka Fukufuji was drafted by the LA Kings in 2004. First Japanese born player drafted (I think) and he actually played a few games as well. And didn’t the Ottawa CFL franchise actually draft a dead guy?
I've been waiting for this all offseason. Also that jersey looks good from the front but ugly in the back. Why did they make it look like they're wearing capes?
Go look at that draft when we got Titanic... that draft as a whole had to be worst in NHL history... it was really bad for everyone. The Taro draft pick was awesome... if you want some other great reading, look up the April fools day gags that the Sabres came up with in those years... the 70's were a hilarious time to be a Sabres fan... (for one, see the nylon ice surface!)
First thing that comes to mind when I think of the Sabres is always Lindy Ruff. Takes them to a Stanley Cup appearance in his 2nd season and then they just hung onto him for the next 13-14 years hoping that ‘99 playoff run would comeback any day now.
Shannon please burn that turd burger of a Sabres sweater. Its awful, and us Sabres fans are probably more ashamed of that thing than our playoff drought over the last 10 years.
as a baseball fan my favorite thing about it is the different stadiums. id love for the nhl to reverse that rule and allow different arena sizes within reason.
Idk if it’s just me but how do the Sabres retire Robert’s jersey number but not Andreychuk’s? One of the longer serving players on the list and their 2nd all time point scorer. Am I missing something?
@@scarycrazymann that’s pretty shit for him. But I mean although they overshadowed him at the time all you have to do is look at his stats to see how much he contributed but I’m not the sabres head office/ownership so what do I know 😂
@Used Napkin my guy pointed out something obvious about the sabres and it took minutes for someone to make it about the leafs. That’s hockey in a nutshell.

Fukufuji was so bad.. Like goddamn
He’s one of the best sabres to exist.
Which is why he didn't last long in the league which is unfortunate but yeah, still an interesting story though@@rightthroughthecounterstri3961
@@stentorofsparta3576 The legend lives on in Buffalo haha
@@hockeyxchange3 it’s a disgrace that he hasn’t been honoured by the organization.

When it first came out I got excited for it thinking it would be a decent gold jersey until I saw the back.
Light was at the end of the tunnel with eichel to.
Don't forget they also retired RJ's name to the rafters this year.
The Buffalo Sabres can be summed up in that Simpsons clip where homer rebuilds Flanders house. Their fans can be summed up by Ned Flanders reaction to that.
HULL WAS IN THE CREASE !!! It changed everything ! It still haunts me.
To this day I am begging they print #74 Tsujimoto jerseys
I always see at least one or two every game.
Chants of "We want Taro" lasted for many years, long after Punch left the Sabres.

Just started getting into hockey and pick the Sabres as my team, thanks for the info so I can know a bit about them!
Also retired is RJ’s microphone. Easily my favorite banner up in the rafters, we love RJ

I am glad they want back with bison jumping over the sabers logo

Didn't know about the made up draft pick. That's really interesting. Hoping that the Sabres get better.
You want a story about a draft pick? Look up on TH-cam the story of smuggling Alex Mogilney out of Russia. It is one heck of a story.
I thought Buffalo traded Taro Sujimoto for future considerations. Not sure where FC is playing now, maybe Vegas
That’s if Vegas hasn’t traded him yet. Maybe he got traded to a team on his NTC
The Titanic joke 💀💀💀
😃
Can you do a career video of Thomas Vanek?

He put the mid ad roll right before the skate in the crease mention. That was a double whammy. 😖😖
I miss Hockey Fanatic and the award history...
The titanic comment was hilarious
THAT TITANIC JOKE 😭😭😭😭
Miller! He went to my school Michigan State
I've been waiting for this all offseason. Also that jersey looks good from the front but ugly in the back. Why did they make it look like they're wearing capes?
Not too many impact players over the 15 years or so other than Miller and Pominville.

Someone should absolutely draft Future Considerations in some late 3rd.
Not sure , he's got to be in his late 60's now at least, despite his popularity. Mike Sillinger is the only one who has been traded more :P

He was a pain in the ass to play against too. Looked like he was going to literally be a lifelong Sabre.
yay finaly the sabres
Nice video you only forgot that the sabres drafted Perreault.
Mogilny's 89 isn't retired?
Sabres have been out of the first round more recently than Toronto lol
tire fire again
Probably the best Draft Flops List yet, name-wise of course!!
These aren't really histories so much as profiles, but appreciated nonetheless
They are updates of the team histories he did 3 years ago, I think.
My EC team!
And didn’t Ottawa of the CFL draft a dead guy?

Andreychuck was over shadowed by mogilny and LaFontaine and Hasek
@@scarycrazymann that’s pretty shit for him. But I mean although they overshadowed him at the time all you have to do is look at his stats to see how much he contributed but I’m not the sabres head office/ownership so what do I know 😂
Because Robert was part of the French Connection line and I believe they retired all three numbers at the same time.
@@Tocco28 well would you take andreychuck over any of those guys?
Buffalo is where you need to go if you've spent too much time in Toronto lol. The franchise can get away with more mediocrity in that market.
I’d really like to be a fan of the 22-23 Sabres but the ownership is trash.
The Buffalo Sabres history.....lose, lose and lose more.
@Used Napkin They’ve been coasting on the “Broad Street Bullies” since the beginning of humanity. 🤣
@Used Napkin Funny you should mention the Flyers. They beat the Sabres in the 1975 Stanley Cup finals.
