Came for the insane tom span, stayed for the incredibly tasteful, musical, dynamic drum solo.

Simon is one of my favorite drummers of all time. Original, always fun to watch and amazing. His drumming style is unique ... no duplicating here!! Love watching interviews .. he is a precision communicator like his drumming.

I so much more enjoy drummers that utilize dynamics and musical taste rather that seeing how fast they can play and just bashing the hell out of everything. Simon is a prime example of musical taste and dynamics.

All trolls commenting negatively : I suggest you make a video of yourselves demonstrating your so called ability, post it on TH-cam, then let the rest of us who admire and look up to this man/ drummer/studio engineer/producer, and session legend, be the judge of whether or not you're deemed worthy of even being as good as his pinky toe nail..Oh, then you can show us your career spanning credentials with famous musicians, artists, and bands..Better get cracking..

I'm a drummer and I admit that I'll usually be the first to hit the concession stand when a drum solo starts at a live show. That being said, I could watch Simon Phillips play all day. Both he and Gavin Harrison do such musical solos; they're the only ones I really enjoy watching.

    •  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

one of the best drum solos i've ever heard was by Marco Minnemann!

He is a millionaire or close at least and his timing between hand and foot is not so great. I didn't thumb down but this solo is too sloppy for him. His worst solo I have ever seen. The authentic reason here is that he's sounding great (no matter the year/show/drum kit/snare/band). A drumset without the musician is just that, a thing. Almost all drums will sound good if something like Simon is playing them. Leaving that concept behind, for me Tama drums are the best for a lot of reasons and personal experiences, but well, that's just a matter of taste and feel also. This guy will be missed someday, it's one of a kind

Dear god. What can one say? I remember hearing him for the first time on Pete Townshend's White City and thinking ... holy crap, who is that drummer? Here we are in 2018 (as I read this) to find out what a lion he is.

I remember an old Modern Drummer article on him, and the author wrote : «After watching Simon Phillips, the bad thing is that you can't help wonder : what are the chances that I'll ever get this good?».
That was 25 years ago. Imagine now...
Oh, and no way some of these toms are not the same size.
