      Pablo Matias awesome! Can you tell us how you did it? What materials did you use?

  • @FutureWiredTec
    @FutureWiredTec 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    For future reference:
    1. you can make a circuit discharge by holding the power button AFTER you have disconnected the batteries, this would insure there is no electricity in the tablet while you work on the tablet.
    2. You can spread the thermal paste around the chipset with a card (like the one you used to unclip the pins) so you wont have to move anything.
    3. As far as i know MX4 is short proof, they not using conductive materials in their MX4.

    The Chinese can produce anything, these mega companies should contract you to do the quality checks and suggest improvements. I would suggest the first one to do it would have a have a huge advantage over the rest :) and get the KiwiChris seal of approval ! cheers

    Thanks, this lowered my temps by 40C.
    Mine didn't even have a thermal pad between the cpu and heatsink and would go straight to 99 degrees when gaming unless i throttled the cpu.
    Now it stays around 60c.

    hey! thanks for the video, this makes this tablet pretty appealing for the price. did battery life increase notably after you modded it?
    if i get it i might mill small ridges or a grid pattern into the back to give it a larger surface area, and make it more grippy.

    Just finished mod on my Mix Plus with few changes:
    -used thinner layers of thermal paste
    -added some thermal paste on top of the center of the original thermal pad and added 0.1mm copper plate on top of that to make sure that whole heating area sticks well to the back
    Temps are now about 30ºC lower in high stress :)

    Successfully done. The most difficult part was opening the case, that's all. I use 2 (fortunately unused) identity cards, 1 got broken. Guitar pick didn't do for me, maybe the corner of mine is too rounded. Currently temp is happy at around 50-55, 70-75 after running AnTuTu 3D. All of this while store is updating and browser is downloading. Previously even just browsing around would raise the temp to 80-85 which is not acceptable. I've ordered the Ocube cover, so even if the back becomes hotter, it shouldn't be as noticable.
    EDIT: Highest temp when running Geekbench: 80 (y)
    EDIT 2: I change the thermal paste from HY880 to NT-H1 and I'm good for another 5 degrees (y)

    just did this on my newly received mix plus with a 15x15x1mm copper shim. mine now gets to around 82C according to hwinfo64. Maybe because of the smaller shim I used ?? Or used the thermal paste TOO sparingly. Anyhow, still lower temperatures compared to before the mod.

  • @eliinthewolverinestate6729

    I went the path of least resistance and cut holes in back of case for heat sinks. Screw the extra insulation. The more surface area the better cooling. And the least resistance the faster it cools. Runs 35-37 •c. That copper sheet could be cut into fractal WiFi antenna. Plus it would allow more heat to escape. Think it acts as heat shield. Increasing the insulation factor.

    Allright, my cube mix plus is dispatched from gearbest (I wonder how long it'll take to arrive) and I just ordered a 15mmX15mmX1mm copper shim from Banggood... Hopefully this will work as good as in your video!
    Btw, Chris, you mentioned hammering the aluminium heatsink... Why's that? Is it that the mod doesn't get too thick and things start pushing at the screen or why?

    • @RidvanGER
      @RidvanGER 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      did the your smaller copper shim worked out? did you also hammerd the heatsink? ty

      The mix plus arrived 8 days after ordering. But the material for the mod hasn't arrived yet. But according to chris from techtablets, it shouldn't be necessary to hammer the aluminium heatsink. btw, I now ordered a 20x20x1mm copper shim too... I'll keep you posted when the mod-material arrived and I finished the mod.

    *less number of contacts > low thermal pad thickness > good thermal compound * that's how the priority should be.
    I would have just used an expensive thermal pad on the CPU and between the case, I think that would have worked better,
    I don't see the point in adding a chunk of copper in between if you are not going to take out the metal covering because you are putting two layers of thermal compound and one layer of metal instead of one thermal pad and it does not seem intuitive, if possible do a comparison between having just a thin thermal pad(plus copper if space left) between metal cover and back cover and also change the thermal pad on the processor
    Metal should only be used when you need to fill gap someway

  • @jaycoblue
    @jaycoblue 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hey, great video! I have a couple of questions for you if you don't mind. Do you recall well enough to estimate the thickness of the original thermal pad that was affixed to the CPU from the factory? I would like to order a larger and much more conductive thermal pad to use between the steel screw plate and the backplate of the device, and as there are several thicknesses available I'd just want to make sure I am ordering at least about the right thickness. Currently I am thinking 1mm shim and 1mm thermal pad.
    Secondly, do you have an opinion on using thermal *adhesive* between the copper shim and the screw plate, and using thermal *paste* between the shim and the CPU? I would think that this way, the shim would not be able to move because the screw plate is fixed in place, but the whole assembly (screw plate and shim) would still be able to be removed if need be... Thoughts?

    • @demannuresu2378
      @demannuresu2378 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm thinking of doing the same way as you wrote. Did bigger, 1mm thermal pad work out well? What thermal adhesive did you use, and do you have comments on thermal conductivity of it? Please update of your progress.

    • @jaycoblue
      @jaycoblue 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I ended up using a 20x20x1m copper shim with Arctic Silver 5 to the CPU, then a 1mm thermal pad from the copper shim to the internal heat sink(this holds the shim in place), then a 1mm pad from the internal heat sink (cut to the full outline of the internal heatsink) to the backplate. I went from hitting 90c+ in Prime95 to topping out just under 55c.
      I bought the Arctic thermal pad (145x145x1mm) and it works very well.

    • @pol2835
      @pol2835 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jacob, Do you cut the Arctic thermal pad (145x145x1mm) to (20x20x1mm) or do you used the full size?

    • @jaycoblue
      @jaycoblue 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      20x20 from the copper shim that is touching the CPU to the heat spreader plate (on the side of the plate that FACES the circuit board), and the full outline of the heat spreader plate to the back casing (opposite the circuit board side of the plate).
      Back Casing // Full outline pad // Cube Heat Spreader // 20x20 pad // 20x20 Copper Shim // Arctic Silver 5 // CPU

    • @TheJeep3000
      @TheJeep3000 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for sharing this! So, you have used a 1mm copper shim, on top of that a 1mm thermal pad, then comes the internal heatsink and you also put a big thermal pad in that whole plate to connect with the outer case? If that is correct, wouldn't it be too big and causing the screen to bulge like I have read a lot about?

    Two questions:
    1. Didn't catch it if you said it. What thickness copper heat sink should I get? I see it ranging from 0.3mm to 1.2mm on Banggood.
    2. If I buy this it'll be my first tablet, so not a tablet expert here, but can the RAM memory be increased? The 4gb replaced with 8gb? Since you mentioned the SSD can be replaced, idk what other parts can too. Really liking everything on this tablet, except the 4gb memory thing. I want to get it specifically for drawing, programming, and 3D modeling when I don't feel like sitting at the comp.
    Btw guys theres a 20% off coupon now on banggood, so its about 285$ now actually. The tablet alone.

  • @eraldorh
    @eraldorh 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Iv noticed you are always worried that if the paste gets on the board its going to kill it, its not. Most thermal compounds including mx-2 and mx-4 are not electrically conductive so its fine to get some around the chip. Its always better to use too much than too little.
    If you have ever opened up laptops or graphics cards youll note that manufacturers always get paste around the chip and on the board and nothing is ever harmed so as long as the paste you are using doesnt contain metal then its fine.

    3:12 I'm pretty sure it's "grounded" rather than "earthed", in electrical circuits the negative is called ground. I assume it's because you're translating literally from spanish.

      Hmm made an error, I do speak more Spanish when in Spain than I do English and sometimes the English word doesn't come to me first...

    They really should start putting heat sinks on

    • @Techtablets
      @Techtablets  7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Or just a thermal pad between the heatsink and rear metal housing. They did it on the Cube i7

      +TechTablets.com maybe from a manufacturer's point of view, increased internal heat, less contact heat from the back=happy ambiguous customers. Then the lifespan of the device is shortened so they earn more money. (Lel that was dark, probably not the case, just my dangerous thinking,)

    Meu tableb após traçar a bateria está esquntando toda a carcaça de um jeito que causa queimaduras. Além disso o processador está chegando a 91 graus. Não dá nem pra segurar ele na mão 😢. Já tentei de tudo e sou técnico amador .

  • @scottgriffin449

    They should use a heatpipe like in the Galaxy S8 smartphone

    Is the RAM upgradable ?

  • @aurionson

    I know why they don't do that by default. I just did it and the back gets to 55C with 8w TDP (up from 7w). Which is very uncomfortable to the touch. This is while reaching 100C internal... Also, GTA V still kinda lags without mods... Time to go listen to that lowspecgamer guy.

      Heatsink are great for any high performace devices, however if the device fall for some reason and the copper pad moves, it could short the device and manufactures do not want to take that risk. An other reason could be to save some pennies on each device wich tranlsates to millions. That is my opinion on this matter.

    You use way to much thermalpaste, a thinner layer would give you even better temps

    • @IwCk
      @IwCk 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use the same amount of thermal paste he used on my rigs. That is way too much for a little copper pad.

    You should be wearing gloves man. The oils on your fingers are definitely reducing efficiency on any surface you touch. You dont realize how much oil is on your fingers but it is a lot.
