In the mid 90smy girlfriend ( now wife) and I climbed to the boom point of this particular machine when At job 200 when the mine was temporarily shut down. What a view. Now there is at least one gaurd and the laws are much stricter. i used to watch this for hours when I was a teen.

Thank you, glad you enjoyed it! One of the reasons I make my videos is to share what I see with people who want to learn about the mining industry and who don't have to opportunity to be around this big equipment

We had a large dragline near my town 30 yrs ago, seen it work a few times,it was dismantled and shipped to Canada in the late 80,s I think. It was a Ransomes and Rapiern1800,i recall, had a 40 yd bucket,at the time it was the biggest in Europe, back in theb60,s. Worked on the Wimpey mining site in Glyneath,in S Wales UK.wish it was still there. At 52 I still love watching machines work, always have since a small child.

Great to see this video.Brings back memories as I was part of the maintenance crew looking after the 15/50w Bucyrus Erie that worked in South East Northumberland,UK.
Regrettably gone now as it was scraped due to lack of work.

I learned to run dragline on a Northwest Model 41. Some operators cursed it but I loved it. I always hoped to make it to the really big mining machines, but alas, there are very few draglines outside of mining and I never got that far. Thanks for the outstanding videos.

I live 5 miles from this drag! I used to sit and watch this thing with a 12 pack!

    what a monster.
It must take some time for a operator to get to be as good
as this person. He makes it look so easy. nice video of that machine.

    Congratulations PAmining!!
I live in Greece, and I don't get to see such big equipment, but you guys do a fantastic job!

Think of it this way, if you had a hydraulic excavator rated at 10yd and tried to put a 20yd bucket on what would happen? The same basic principle applies to a dragline. These machines are designed for a target bucket capacity range. A bigger bucket means a bigger rope when means a larger drum diameter, more powerful motors, heavier ballast, etc. Installing a bucket that’s double the machines rated capacity will do serious damage to the machine

I can’t believe I didn’t Discover these videos sooner. If I were to find a toy model of one of these I quite literally would not have room in my room for anything els.

Early model 7820's without the mast weighed around 1,930 ton; this is a newer machine that weighs 2,000 ton. The bucket is 44cu.yd. I'm sure you can convert the units online!

Yep that's a 5230. With a good operator it doesn't take long to take a cut off with this machine

Is that a 5230 in the left background? If that thing is throwing 44 yards of dirt 100 yards away, that's moving a lot of material.

I wish that MARION was still making these, but I guess they sold out.

I always have the feeling that the overall machine size is way too big compared to the bucket size it has. Couldn't they double the bucket capacity and still get away with it or the content it carries would be way to heavy for the machine's power output ?
