2013 marks the 30th Anniversary of the big budget cult favorite sci-fi fantasy epic, KRULL! So I thought it was the perfect time to take an in depth look at the Special Edition DVD I've had for ages.
You can buy the exact edition I'm reviewing in this video right here:

My father produced the movie, I lived in London for six months during the filming and pre production. glad to hear people say positive things about the movie. The cult following that seems to grow year after year is rather nice too. I spent many hours at Pinewood watching Steven Archer animate the crystal spider for the Widow of the Web sequence. I also have a screen used Glaive.
Oh wow, to be able to see all of that firsthand must have been amazing for you as a kid! Yeah, I've always been struck by the creativity that went into this. They really created a whole new fantasy world, with nice little nods to some tropes of the genre along the way. And a screen used glaive??? That is an amazing souvenir! Thanks for sharing, glad I could put a bit more Krull love out there. :)
Thanks for reviewing this. It's my favourite film of all time. And the poster is beautiful - my favourite movie poster of all time!
History shows that many films that weren't hits at the cinema, are actually good or even great. I think Krull is an excellent film, but it still isn't well-known. It's one of those 80s cult classics I will always enjoy, and I'll keep recommending it to people. A beautiful blu-ray version would be a dream come true.
I used to love this as a kid, I still have it on Dvd and I need to watch it again soon. I would love a Blu-Ray copy of the film.
Oh, and the flammable horses. You gotta love the flammable horses!
nice movie I hope they remake this movie
Thanks for reviewing this OLD SCHOOL classic Sean, I haven't seen this in years!!! This movie had SO MUCH POTENTIAL but living in the shadow of "Return of The Jedi" dampened the Box Office receipts, It's also too bad a Toy line was never made. Hopefully this classic 80's film and Jaws 3 ( In True 3D for todays HDTV's ) will get a Proper BR release soon.
Thnaks Sean for giving this film some Love I was 13 when it came and I still love it to this day very underrated film/Love James Horner Score
i liked krull shame there isn't a bluray version out for it yet
zaranyzerak have you seen eraserhead
Person: says Krull is better than any movies ever
People who never watched it: your wrong
Me: it is the best
(I own a Krull disk)
I watched the film on HBO when I was a kid and it was fun to watch. I'll keep an eye out for a bluray release because when ever I buy a DVD the bluray comes out lol.
Surely the movie must take up more space than one layer?
Best fantasy film after The Lord of the Rings films.
Krull is my 2nd favourite fantasy film of all time and my favourite that isn't based on something else. Good vid :)
What's your first
Amber Simpson Conan the Barbarian
Ok
Lord of the Rings meets Star Wars = Willow
I grew up watching this movie. Watched it over and over many times. A childhood favourite, even though some parts were a bit gross for me at the time. lol
Michal rose did you ever about thre being reamke of krull over the past few years
@@zacharyjochumsen9677 Haven’t heard anything about a remake. It would be cool though.
Personally I would more say Conan the Barbarian crossed with Star Wars.
Hey um Sean do you eve play phntasy star as thre some elmemyrz of that games series that kind resembles krull but also star star wars and starchasr legend of orin
Kr
this description sounds identical to that of the older dvd versionthat was available about seven years earlier.
criterion is release that movie this year or next year
Sean you ever saw starcrash
I really enjoyed Krull, and I only saw it fairly recently so I can't blame it on nostalgia. Really creative effects, a fun cast (including a very young Liam Neeson), some wonderful production design, and that BA villain's lair that was like a constantly morphing Dali painting. Great video, Mr. Z!
Galoob I think was acthuu devpoling a line of toys based on krull but they were never produced due to the box office failure of the film at the time
is this widescreen or fullscreen release Sean what do I think of krull reboot or sequel as they talked about one f years with Ken marshal, returning as colwyn as cowoyn would have them up with his son to fight beast again t save krull
Widescreen. I never buy fullscreen unless that's the intended aspect ratio of something.
Do you have the VHS as well
@@zaranyzerak have you ever seen space hunter adventures in the forbidden zone it came out around the same time as krull and it had molly ringwald in it
@@zacharyjochumsen9677 Yes, I saw it in theaters in 3D when it first came out. And many times on home video since then. I have it on DVD, I plan to pick up the Blu-ray at some point.
@@zaranyzerak the blu ray has been out for a while and is thre reason why mill creek relsed the blu ray instead of Sony who owns it
I was hoping you would address the giant monster head thingy in the background of the original movie poster. I've seen the movie multiple times and never noticed anything in it that even remotely resembles the thing on the poster. There must be an interesting story behind it.
Wow! I can't believe I missed that. I saw the movie at the theatre with my parents and brother when it was first released. Afterwards, I recall us all wondering about the creature on the poster. Years later, I rented the VHS version and made a point of keeping my eyes peeled for anything remotely resembling that creature in the movie. I didn't see it. (I also saw it a third time on TV.) Now I really want to see it again. I wonder if I'll see it this time around.
I NEED THIS ON DISC.
Then stop screaming and click on one of the Amazon links in the description.
Imagine finding the Krull soundtrack on Vinyl at a flea market for only two bucks . . . Only to find that the sleeve was empty. Cause that's what happened to me. :(
I LOVE "Krull" :)
Still got the original movie poster framed after all these years, and I still got the old Swedish VHS in the collection. Even though I upgraded to the DVD when it came out, I just couldn´t get rid of the tape, for both nostalgic reasons and because it had the original poster art. I got a 1080i HDTV rip of it, and it looks fantastic in High Def. So Sony do have a brand new transfer for it, but I´ll guess we have to wait for Twilight Time to release it...
Beware Krull fans :
I just bought from amazon (solo enterprises) a brand new DVD Krull S.E.
Guess what ?
All extra features are missing from the menu
There are only two audio commentaries and some preview trailers
Plus there is no booklet inside
Now this is what is called WTF
I know there are people out there who have similar exeperiences
Any idea why the company has ripped these extras off ?
Hey um Sean breking news did you hear jj abhransc if going to rebotting krull
Interesting, not sure how I feel about that.
@@zaranyzerakyeh im curious how thre ging to fit if it ging oik full 100 percent relying og orgin movi lor soft reboot sequl to orginsl krull who knows I'm aslo crikus how if it ging of if fhing or th ging funinti franchise whi irginkrul was me t ti first kf frahnice but not never barely became one

Thanks for the detailed review. Most of the Amazon "reviews" of the special edition DVD are idiots just typing "great movie" or talking about the shipping.
You're very welcome! I know what you mean, I see that far too often on amazon reviews. Yeah, this is still the edition to get for extras, bar none. Really great selection of stuff. The Blu-ray looks great though, if you want the movie in HD. I have both now.
um the IMDb seems to have quite the fo about this flick
Seannyounever seen stravrash with carlonine Munro and and David hasselhoff
You mean Star Crash? Yes, I have it on Blu-ray. It's fun, I like it.
@@zaranyzerak yeah I saw it on tubi TV its considered to be one of the most blatant star wars ripoff ever made
Hey Sean you mentioned that the public is stupid? Well while I agree to an extent but I put most of the blame on the Media. If you take sociology you will learn that the media tells you what to ware, what to eat, what music to listen, what to watch, what games to play and what to believe!
ok someday can i send you stuff one day that you be nice
Did you see Dune? I think that movie was to hard to fallow the plot. And it sucks.
i live in texas but i going to send you: like godzilla 1954 and godzilla vs biollante on blu ray
Dracula Vs. Frankenstein (1971) dvd
Eclipse Series 37: When Horror Came to Shochiku
the wraith 1986
smurfs dvd beside Christmases dvd
the last shark by retrovision
also crimewave on blu ray
and naughty bear double trouble on ps3 went i am 9th grade
Ah Krull, a movie that defenately reeks of the stereotypical 1980's...movie. :D Funnily enough in the UK this film is still a PG, but the BBFC are idiots so what do they know? Typical Sony, unless the public wants a Blu-ray, they won't get off their arses and do anything about it. Nice job with the American Dad screengrab at the end. ;) BTW you call that a glaive, (produces Sailor Saturn's staff) THIS is a glaive. ;)
10th comment!
This is a very bad film. It's outright annoying.
+Zaranyzerak Fuess you like bad storytelling and boring scenes, with lots of characters that nobody gives a crap about, complete with a nonsensical anticlimax.
