for those that don't know, the glaive in the movie Krull can be thrown, but w/ time, it is controlled by one's thoughts and eventually uses it's own will to guide it w/ no concentration or effort by the wielder needed and doesn't miss. • @Doomsday_Report

@@Riceball01 The major issue is always that if all you need is a distraction then dirt and gravel are free, take no materials or time that could be better used for a proper weapon and probably work better than a single object, obviously you lose the penetrating, instant kill power of a super deadly ninja star, but a cloud of sand right in your face can be very distracting.
If resources are tight enough you're thinking of scavenging from enemies then invest what you have in a survival tool like a knife or hatchet, which can be used for more than throwing away and could even be used to craft a better weapon, like the legendary "pointy stick I found in the woods."

Fun fact: the infamous Castlevania throwing Cross is based on a German weapon known as the Wurfkreuz...not an iron one (which there are depictions and historical ones that exist) but a SURVIVAL version which was two stakes tied together in the middle and sharpened on all four sides. The original Japanese handbook for the game shows this wooden version. The wooden version is meant for hunting small game in the woods apparently...like rabbits or other small animals and is heavy enough you can use it to bludgeon with while the ends can pierce things as well. For Castlevania this combined the classic stake through the heart and a Christian cross into one weapon which fit nicely into the whole killing Dracula goal.

Krull was supposed to be a generic Dungeons & Dragons movie. When the writers needed a MacGuffin, they looked in the Players Handbook weapons table and picked the name "glaive" at random because it sounded cool. The D&D glaive is a French pole arm. That's where it came from.

The reason that weapon works so well is it uses the physics of a Shuriken. They come in different types, like three prong or four pronged sharp edges, I had one with 8 sharp points so like the Krull blade it would almost 100 percent stick into whatever I threw it at IF it hit with the sharp points and on a surface they could penetrate enough to stick. If it was, say sold steel, nope it bounces right off, but if it were wood, it sticks nicely. I got good at throwing three and four point stars. I wasn't a big fan of throwing spikes or knifes. I liked the idea that if I missed one, the other would hit.

The prince of the movie is using a sword as main weapon. So he will not be disarmed after throwing. But when the evil Slayers attack, he goes on a quest to regain the "5 bladed sword" (called in the german version). That thing is magic. Workin on a mind of its own. The version you build, is way more tame. But your test shows the lethality. Basicaly its a star shuriken of the larger kind. For handling, shorten the sharp edges and leave the center just play metal.
Great episode. Keep up the fun stuff and keep yourself save.

The lore, if you're interested. From the knowings of Ynyr:
'The Glaive is a holy artifact from a time long past, when Men first walked the surface of Krull aeons and aeons ago. It is what is called a 'gaeaform', an object that embodies the very spirit and will of its planet - as the sword Excalibur is to the world called Earth, so the Glaive is to Krull. And as such, no evil can stand against it, be it the darkness in the hearts of Men or that of creatures beyond mortal ken. It can only be wielded by a champion of its choosing, a man of honest character and noble intention - and once chosen, the two are bonded for life. There is no fear of its destruction, for it is a thing of Krull, and shall return to Krull if 'tis ever lost. Its champion need only seek it again, and it will know, and come once more to his hand.'

Usually when I think throwing weapons, I think slings, which are usually used to harass formations. This actually seems a reasonably irritating weapon to use though, didn't expect that. Particularly from a skirmishing perspective where you might not want to close ranks, but still want to weaken another formation. Though having to wear hand protection does make sense, given the hands are pretty vulnerable in most combat contexts.

It's great to see you with your own show. I hope it does well. Even before the 'glaive' in 'Krull' (1983), 'The Beastmaster' (1982) had another, similar throwing weapon, called a 'caber', which is often also referred to as a 'glaive', because humans are dumb. If you want a construction challenge, try making one of those 'Beastmaster' 'cabers'. The 'caber' from 'Beastmaster' is about as much like an actual caber - a large log, as tossed in the Highland games - as the 'glaive' from 'Krull' looks like an actual glaive, but the 'caber' looks much cooler as a weapon, and it might even be more practical and effective, despite its radical design. The 'Krull' 'glaive' is just a vaguely-sentient, magical hira-shuriken.
The advantage and disadvantage of the caber-glaive is that it is two similar metal pieces, each like two small, steel francisca / throwing axes back-to-back with a common handle. The two pieces are pinned together at one end of the handles, with the double-headed, radial blades at the other end, so it can fold in half by the two pieces rotating around the joining pin. This could mean it will either fold in half during flight (or not), meaning you halve the chances of the blades hitting the target and maybe just hit the target with the blunt end where the pin is (disadvantage); or it stays open in flight and folds up on impact, so one bladed end will embed in the target, then the other end will swing down and slash into the target aswell, with all the rotational momentum it had during flight. This will mean you get one hacking wound from embedding the blade when the first end hits, and a slashing wound right next to it as the other blade rotates shut (advantage). Much bleeding ensues.
In the first scenario, you'll either get two shallower wounds from both blades hitting together, side-by-side, and sharing the kinetic energy of the blow, or a blunt force trauma from the blunt ends hitting together. In the second scenario, you would get a deeper hacking wound from one blade embedding with much of the kinetic energy of the throw, then a second, deeper, slashing wound from the second blade closing shut with all the torque from the rotation. It would be interesting to see which scenario actually happened or what the relative probability was of each happening.
'The Beastmaster' 'caber' was a heavier, more solid construction than the 'Krull' 'glaive', so it would probably have a much greater momentum on impact. Of course, it was also magical and could return to the thrower if it wasn't insta-killing everyone it flew past, just like the 'glaive' from 'Krull', but the blades on the 'caber' were much more choppy-hacky, and less stabby-slicey, like the 'glaive', so they would probably cause a bigger wound with more trauma and blood loss. The 'caber' would also be much easier and safer to throw hard (and carry), because all four blades and most of the weight would be at one end when you throw it, like a francisca or tomahawk.

I had a DnD character who was a Tibbet, a Catwere, which is a halfling or hobbit that turns into a House Cat and can become a Giant version of the House Cat. Think Tiger Sized House Cat. I was a Himalayan Cat, looks like a fluffy Persian like cat crossed with a Simiamese cat. I also had a Halfing form with cat-like features like Cat Eyes, Cat Ears, and what today you'd probablly call a Furry. I was NOT a Furry in real life. I didnt' make this character for anything remotely like that, but I thought it would be cool to play a Tibbet as a "Were Cat" rather than Were Tiger or Were Wolf" or something more familiar. My character at some point got some fur prints, or 'fur tattoos' as it was discolored fur basically that looked like the Krull weapon. I had 4 of these. I could animate them so they left the body, metamorphosing real ewapons, which flew and my character controlled telekinetically so I didn't need to catch them or use my paws. That means I could use these in my two Cat forms, small and large.
But the smaller form's weapons were smaller and did less damage. I thought of my larger cat form as a Battle Cat. too much He-Man I know, and yes I had seen Krull and I was going for this same type of weapon. It took a while to find a means to get these weapons. They were like Dancing Swords and could fight on their own, or I could direct one or more of them with a Concentration check, and the modifier for it was more difficult the more I tried to control. I generally speaking controlled one, doing so means it used my Attack modifier, otherwise it had a default modifier, which was lower than mine. If I failed, the Action was wasted as I tried to gain control of it.
My character did about as much damage in the game as a large Tiger so I could fight, but I wasn't some super-powered character. It was more the cool factor I liked. I loved being a small cat going into places, hanging out and its just a cat everyone. No one notices the cat in most urban areas that is out of order.
I even recruited a gang or pack of other feline cats in my local city and had a little gang of them who could spy and other things for me. My class was Thief or Rogue/Psionicist. I had telekinetic powers and those weapons were created for a psionic to control. This could have easily been done with only magic, but at that time that is what I was playing. I basically used my psionics to enhance my thief much like a Mage/Thief might, so I wasn't mental blasting people. I could not read minds, but eventually did get a medallion that allowed me to ESP (read minds). I liked that item a lot. I had a Hat of Disguise too, Cloak of Displacement, and eventually two Axes of Hurling for my Hafling form.
So when I see the Krull weapon it brings back memories like that for me.

Did a bit of digging on the etymology, following a hunch that Glaive and Cleave are near homonyms.. Glaive seems to come from the Latin Gladius, and had been used to refer to swords, spears, lances and such. So yeah, polearm with a blade. It also was influenced by Latin words for club, cudgel and other sticks one would brandish. Meanwhile Cleave comes from the PIE root "gleubh", which on first glance is already looking more like Glaive. The "gleubh" root is also used for cutting, gouging, carving, peeling, splitting, and such. This all paints the picture that these two words were used in tandem to describe things that cut and the act of cutting. A glaive is something cleaves, and likewise it takes whatever form enables that, whether it's a one-handed butcher's tool, or a big two-handed polearm with a swept blade, or a 5 bladed throwing "star."

I would use a thicker blade. Also, you joined it at the center, but I suspect the movie build would have the tangs individually mounted into each tine of of the center piece. I think the blades in the movie were more curved and meant to slice, not impale..which is why they went with Glaive as a description. And when he throws the glaive, its not strictly aim and luck..he is actually mentally/magically controlling where it hits..so in a sense, the magical force between him and the glaive is the "pole arm". If i made one modification to both the movie design and your design, I'd cover the back edge of the blace with a little area that you can use as a handling area. If you think of the center piece as a piece of jewelry made of gold..I'd extend some of the gold in each tine to coat the back of the blade to give you a handling area. The final thing would be, if possible, I would design the center piece that at least makes a balance between each blade, and also is designed to be aerodynamic in a way that keeps it going straight whenever you throw it. The fantasy land ideas I have, but don't know how to do, is to put a gyroscopic and servo motor system, and laser targeting system in the center piece that actually allows you to use a selector switch so that you can throw it perfectly straight and then have it fly vertically..or switch it and throw it straight, but have it go perfectly straight horizontal. Also, spinning the blades faster than you actually threw them (like a buzz saw).

I generally agree with your evaluation of throwing weapons:
If one is throwing weapons in Mass at a enemy formation they make better sense.
Those are great for war but they're expensive and you need a lot of training. If individual soldiers hold a couple javelins behind their shield or better yet some throwing axes in their belt they can lob them in mass at an enemy. It's kind of irrelevant whether it hits with the edge when you're throwing an ax at a group formation because you're essentially throwing a metal brick with one sharp edge. So if it hits someone in the head with the top back or handle of the axe it will still hurt them; possiby breaking bones or causing a concussion.
If you're just trying to get a formation to break ranks and leave the battlefield that's effective enough. If you have two shield formations fighting in close proximity to each other you don't need as much range as to necessitate bows, crossbows or guns.
If an axe is thrown the axe can be collected later and even if the shaft breaks that's easy enough to repair in the field.
Unlike arrows that are often broken after the first shot in battle.
But to reiterate I agree that having a personal throwing weapon to try to hit a single opponent with is kind of folly I'd rather hang on to it and fight with the weapon then to throw it.

    Thrown weapons have some advantages:
    - make them of leftover pig iron
    - make them with the most sharp blade that gets chipped, bent and broken after one hit
    - zero embellishments
    - bother not about picking them up, let them rust off where they fall
    - it's a RANGED WEAPON minus the bulky force-multiplying instrument that eventually runs out of ammo
    - can still be used as a last last resort melee weapon

The thrown weapon is quite simply the EDC pocket pistol from the time before guns become powerful, reliable and small enough. Its got a fascination because its at least most of cheap, one handed, effective enough, with better range than anything else as easy to carry, and it is a good backup weapon even if you could have a gun/bow or sticking to more melee ranges a real glaive (or even just a big stick) so won't throw it often its handy to have in a pinch. Plus most throwing weapons are also useful enough as tools you'd probably use around camp...

Strictly speaking the practicality of a thrown weapon came down to three things. Surprise, Range, and Lethality. You would be looking to surprise, and or kill/hamper your opponent in some way to either end a fight quickly or give yourself time to run the hell away. Miyamoto Musashi for example, became known for his ability to throw his tanto or wakizashi with frightening accuracy. Even if he missed, the surprise factor was enough to allow him to end a duel.

The next step is to design a throwing aid, like an atlatl for the krull glaive. Maybe you can give it more power that way, especially if you are rebuilding it with more robust blades. Also, would it work just as well if it was just pointed, and not bladed? Maybe then can help with safety when throwing.

Throwing weapons are effective and are for Short Range effective use. Throwing Darts, Shurikens and the like, or throwing axes are among the best, but a Saw Blade if handled correctly and if you have a proper glove you can do some damage with that thing to unarmored people. Take one and throw it. See what happens to tender body areas, bad things. We practiced throwing Shurikens and other 'ninja weapon's', but I am really good at throwing Javelins in real life, and use something like an Atlatl which increases the range, makes if fly faster too. I can use the Nerf version, foam weapon, and peg someone up to like 50 to 75 feet away or so. But if you are 50 feet or less I can, say 20 feet. I most liklely will peg you. It is imaginary damage as it is a foam weapon. But I got you.
