    People like to steam veggies while out camping and I think we would all do it a lot more if we had a good system.
    I want to know the best way to get that job done using a Zebra Loop Handle Pot!
    Here I explore a couple ways of Zebra Pot steaming, testing two mods.
    How do you steam camping veggies?

    I like the inverted lid w/ thermo hole method. lay the grill plate in the lid to keep the veggies out of the "puddle" . my grill plate usually has some additional "flavor" to impart to the veggies and the steam cleans the grill. win, win.

    Excellent video, I generally use the upper pan as a plate, so the idea of putting the steamer holes near the top would work well for me. Cooking pasta and steaming veg at the same time is like two pans in one. Keep the good ideas coming.

    I like the holes drilled in the pan with the lid on top. In this manner one could cook rice underneath (Basamati White) and have asparagus in the steamer basket. Then when the rice is done, turn the lid upside down add the rice, then the asparagus and butter and olive oil, keeping it warm while you brown a Salmon Steak in the pan on the side. Good job!

    I used a method where i made my billy pot into a “Bain Marie” where i filled the largest section with water and the top pan with chocolate and melted it with the steam from the simmering water. Good method i think. It worker perfectly. We ate toasted marshmallows with warm melted chocolate on top with digestive biscuits. This way, you get a s’more but with properly melted chocolate because i find that when eating s’mores, the chocolate doesn’t melt properly. You can also use this method for a cheese fondue. Yummy stuff!

    I think a steamer pot would be beneficial for those items like stinging nettle that if steamed would retain much more of its nutrients then if cooked in water

  • @c_fox7396

    How about a captured strainer in the lid? Something that can be pivoted one way to close it off & maximize heat retention, then turned the other way to act as a strainer or steamer. For sure a weight and cost penalty, but a potential option.

    I second the collapsible steamer basket. You could make one to fit the rim of the pot so the lid can still be clamped with the steamer basket in between. I like haveing a shallow pot in case I would like to use it to maybe fry some fish or hashbrowns. I'm looking forward to picking up one of your cooksets and try out this year.

    I'm thinking that I'll just use the thermometer hole method. One hole & done. Even if it takes a few more minuets to steam.
    Q: Do you think it would be prudent to make a plug for the 3/8" hole when using the pot for non baking or steaming?

    • @fireboxstove
      @fireboxstove  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No there is no need for a plug at all, it doesn't need one at all and still cooks efficiently with the hole. Thanks!

      Did you use the steamer basket with out the inner pan with holes in it, and you couldn’t close the handle, or did you have the steamer basket only and couldn’t close the handle?
      It would be okay if the handle didn’t close, because in transportation mode you wouldn’t have the handle locked. Of course she would have to use the steamer basket and the pan independently.

    I've a steam basket that works so very wonderful, on the 16 pot size, about a inch and a half water in bottom. I don't have holes nowhere in my pots. Got a rack from a old crackpot I use just for spuds. I wish I could send pictures of the two ways I use my pots. I bought my steamer basket off Amazon.

      A standard sized stainless steel steamer basket fits the 14cm & 16cm pots. It also makes a great "bowl stove" for use with the coffee spit. Just put coals in the basket, and dampen the heat by folding the basket inward. It has great air flow from the bottom (and sides when more open). The SAWC (size & weight constrictions) make it a small, versatile, & light tool to add to the cook system. It will fit the nano & firebox stoves, and can be covered with foil for other uses. Cleanup is about the same as the other stoves. If you remove the center post & legs, it can be used to hold your biomass stones & placed upside down, under the pan, when baking horizontal & vertical. It also makes a good cooling tray & drain pan for greasy foods! It can also store items when packed away. Just a few thoughts to get you going!... 😎
      PS- The strainer basket sides make its own windscreen when turned more inward to the center Post.

    I like the idea of putting holes right under the top lip of the pan. I am thinking not only could it be used as a vegetable steamer as you demonstrated here but it may be able to be used as a water desalinator. Water would boil in the bottle, go up as steam, and then puddle in the top area with all the salt removed. Do you think this would be possible?

    • @fireboxstove
      @fireboxstove  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that might work well.

    • @kcjazz62
      @kcjazz62 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      To distill or desalinate, you would need a condensing pan, with a side drain, and a cooling pan above that to facilitate the condensation in the middle pan. The top cooling pan of water would need to be refreshed often. Otherwise, you would just have a percolator... which could be handy too! 😎

    We'd like to have the effective steamer pot for our set, but I don't see them sold on your web site. The inner pot appears to come only with the main pot purchase. We want to keep the included inner pot intact, but would purchase a second one to drill for a steamer...or even purchase one already drilled if you offered them. Adding steaming to the Firebox Stove System really makes sense for preparing healthy meals.

    • @fireboxstove

      James we do not sell them separately at this point so you are correct, you would have to purchase a whole new pot with it. It really is a neat way to cook food while out and about. Thanks for watching!

    Use one like this with a ring on the center post. I can picture you pulling it from the pan with the firestick and setting it down on the table. It has legs that keep it elevated, so it will work for serving without dumping the food or letting it get contaminated from below. It can be used as a collander to rinse foraged greens. I use it to poach fish too. www.amazon.com/Sunsella-Vegetable-Steamer-Stainless-Steel/dp/B00KYDZHSI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1461938943&sr=8-1&keywords=collapsible+steamer

    Is there a way to steam veggies in the Box Pot?

  • @rendercrap
    @rendercrap 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'd like to ask, can I steam things without drilling a hole into the plate/lid? or is it just highly recommended to drill in order to steam? I see a lot of people doing it. Is this just to stop the noise of the steam escaping and rattling the lid? I'm getting mine soon and wondering what your personal preference would be for the 12 cm solo kit. To drill or not to drill? I know it boils down to (pun intended) "it's my preference", but I figure I'd ask what your preference would be as well. Are there any "downsides" to drilling side holes in the plate, or a steam hole in the top? Thanks

  • @holland1904

    Awesome test! I think if you are a steamer and want that in the bush then it definitely would be worth having a designated steamer pan (with holes in the bottom), it could also be used as a strainer for pasta and stuff as well so still multi-functional. Are the big chunks of wood that you use in the stove hard or soft wood, thanks for sharing.

      Hi Joey,
      We do not put holes in the edge rim of the inner pan, only down in it. The size of holes in Steamer Mod are: 2.8 mm. or 7/64”
      NOTE: If you want to drill this yourself be sure you use a nice sharp bit because the material work hardens and you will want to get through the material quickly.

    I lived many years in SE Asia and what I still do is put the Vegies just on top of the rice. Even carrots will not end up at the bottom at all. And if you want to make sure you can also let the rice boil and once the water on top of the rice is gone add the Vegies although it's not necessary..

    Instead of a strainer basket, just add another inner pot/plate similar to what you have now, except this one would have a strainer bottom with a pattern similar to the grilling accessory for the Firebox.Then everything would nestle together.
    Plus, that 3rd strainer "pot" has multi use other than steaming - washing, rinsing, straining foods in the bush, as well as air dry system like a dish rack; line with foil to serve as another plate and/or food prep holder; could also be used as a grill by itself.

    I think if you, drill (1) holes in the lid so as you could put the vegetables in it that way it drain and you not end up with the vegetables in a small pool of water.
    Do the same thing for the pan drill (3) holes at even distance from one and other you could get same results but be able to cook more vegetables than the lid, with the same results.

    With a dedicated many-holed steamer tray or basket you get much of the flavor of the veggies dripping down into the billy. You can add other tasty things to the water to make a soup or you have the beginnings of a gravy. Don't start with too much water. Also, you'll probably never have still- frozen food when you go camping. Take good fresh produce which you can use in the beginning days and frozen food later. Certainly not un-fresh green beans.

      Zebra actually sells steamers now, for 16/18/20cm pots, and I've ordered a few. My idea was to cook rice/pasta/potatoes on the bottom and steam veggies/meat on top, essentially making a rich broth in the process.
      I've seen someone steam multiple vegetables in the different layers, but your idea is brilliant. Steam whatever you want on top and boil in the bottom for a tasty reduction! You could literally make a soup on the bottom while steaming things on top.

    Perhaps have that steamer pan nest inside the regular pan.

      +You Tuber It does. It's the extra pan that comes with the zebra loop handle pots.
