Wonderful performance. Back in 1973 there were so many brilliant rock guitarists that Jorma kind of gets overlooked, but he was fantastic.

Me too, recently listened to Phosphorescent Rat, America's Choice, Double Dose and Bless it's little pointed head, love all of the band lineup's. A fan from way back when music was great.
I prefer the electric Hot Tuna but water song is incredible.

Hot Tuna now owns this corner of musical genre....through talent, endurance, longevity. We can't help but admire them for that. They've already got tour dates set for 2023. These guys deserve to be in Rock Hall of Fame !! In the 1970s every musclecar had a Hot Tuna Double Dose 8 track tape in it, and they're still playing today.
You know, wouldn't it be kind of cool that they always get close, but never get into the RRHOF? They are phenomenal; nuff said...

Jorma and Jack have been in the RRHOF since 1996, when they were inducted with a cool intro by Micky Hart and Phil Lesh with Jorma playing "Embryonic Journey" for "Jefferson Airplane" induction.
This song always brings tears to my eyes. Don't care how high they or audience was, everyone of those amazing artists played w joy of music. Skills galore, fully employed, flat out sharing the experience w everyone. Does anyone see this caliber these days?

I know just what you mean. I saw Tuna play many times in 72-73 in the NY area and it was always a communion of the souls. The audience was right there with them.
Yes, there are those if we allow our judgements and prejudices to not interfere. I think Phish gets there. There are more. I just listened to Bill Kreutzman’s 75th birthday concert in Hawaii as Billy and The Kids. Catch it and listen to Billy Stings shrewd his guitar. Catch Tesdeshi Trucks. I admit that Jorma and Jack can do no wrong and they will always be at the pinnacle of the best in my opinion. But, open up and close hour eyes. They are out there.

I've seen hot tuna half a dozen times since the early seventies.the music from the sixties and seventies will live on with the classics of the ages,no doubt.
I started playing guitar when I was in junior high school, but Jack was the reason I reached for the bass.
His style just clicked with me like no one I’d heard before.

I think Hot Tuna and the Workingman’s Dead album kind of signalled a new beginning for popular music in those days. They kind of circled back to their folk music roots and created something new and enduring.

Thanks for posting. I saw Hot Tuna several times, along with Papa John Creach. Papa always looked a bit frail. But, man! On the violin, he could wail. He always had a smile, and you knew he enjoyed playing to an ever appreciative audience.
We drove from Lafayette LA to Houston to see them play. Got back to the dorm at 6:30 AM in time to freshen up for my math final. I got a C. But it was worth it!

This is so beautiful, am thankful for my older brother who had their albums, sad I never got to see them perform. Loved the sound of Papa John Creach’s violin, it all comes together…a pure masterpiece!

Alembic 1, their first fully built bass. The pickups were on rails as Jack wasn’t sure what he wanted so it was actually a prototype of sorts.

Possibly my favorite Alembic bass. But Phil Lesh also has some choice ones. A friend of mine ended up with Dave Torbert's (from the NRPS). But this one here, what a sound - even on my puny laptop speakers.
This was prime Hot Tuna as I remember them. Saw them 12 days earlier at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds.
Perfection
The tone too. Big, fat, round and on the edge of fuzz. Always recognizable. Never too much. Always serves the song and adds a distinctive touch.
Dig PAPA! This record kept me from self harm when I was a kid!

One of the best songs of all time
A tuneful instrumental piece. True to it's title, like a stream it flows, springing out of a high mountain lake well above the treeline, then dropping and winding down through steep glacial carved canyons into grassy meadows and joining other waterways teaming with trout, that eventually run into the sea. Not what I would label as a song, An adventure in music.

Jack! Amazing person! He invited me to the studio when Burgers was being remixed. That was a amazing experience. That was right before I got very involved with music. I just saw another list. Best bass players. Jack was not on the list. Folks have lost their sense of music! Or even understand what good music is.
I got to sit with Jimmy Carl Black in an empty (almost) bar down in Austin for about 4 hours in 1989. And he was not drinking at all. What a great night. I saw Hot Tuna about 2 weeks after the show in this video and was first in the door so I was front center (no seats ). John Hammond Jr was the opener.

I remember being at this show. It was overcrowded due to the fact that it became a free show. The drugs flowed freely and the concert was spectacular, as the venue was just a local movie theater in Borough Park on New Utrecht Ave.

Winterland I would see Hot Tuna Several Times.... pap John would sit in with Elvin Bishop as well... Those were the days my friend , I thought they would never end, and the sad truth... nothing stays the same for very long!! When I saw them in 76, I thought Papa John was old looking. Now I see this and I think, “damn! He looks young!”
I just saw the boys tonight in Franklin Tennessee on February 18th 2022. They closed with this after an amazing show. It's amazing that it sounded just as good almost 50 years later
First concert I ever went to see: Hot Tuna at the Holiwood Paladium in the mid-70s. Joe Walsh and ELO were the two warm-up acts.

First heard them back in 1973 when I was in college on a show called "In Concert" simulcast on WBCN out of Boston, was completely taken by this song immediately went out and bought the album "Burgers". Still my favorite.

Agreed Pete. They played all 4 years at Stony Brook (70-74) when I was there with the first and last years being acoustic. Then seeing them at the Academy of Music around Thanksgiving most years, along with summer shows at the Sunshine Inn (Asbury Park), Gaelic Park, etc.
@@jackwindrom253 I think we were at a lot of the same shows, I loved the Academy. Stoney brook was a pain to drive to, but so worth it.

The exact same is true of The Grateful Dead, played for sheer love of music. As Wavy Gravy said after Jerry Garcia passed away, the Dead created a ball of joy they sent out to audiences, who fed off it and sent it right back to the band.

I was blessed to see hot tuna at the Longshore men's hall in san francisco. I still remember cassidy on that base he was amazing.
Love Hot Tuna. So many great memories from the 1970s. Saw them at Knebworth.
Their set at Knebworth was recorded and can be found on cd if you know where to look it's an incredible show very heavy.
As someone who has seen Hot Tuna on many occasions along with very early Statship, all I can say is Hot Fuckin Tuna and both Jorma and Jack make some truly wonderful music. I was born in the Rock and Roll sweet spot and attended a University that was well connected to the music industry. Didn’t see everyone due to limited funds while a student…. Never saw Steely Dan, Thin Lizzy, Heart, however one Dead Concert or the Who, not to mention Led Zeppelin, Stones, Joni Mitchell, CSNY, and so many more, creates in my mind a great Rock Memory. Thank god for TH-cam seeing as I lost a lifetime of vinyl and a sexy turntable.still think the best show I ever saw was ELP Brain Salad Surgery…well perhaps the Sympathy for the Devil at Madison Square Garden and Led Zeppelin in the early seventies at the Garden. That night I saw a Rock and roll god. Plant was just so concentrated as were Bonzo and Page. Seems like a lifetime ago but it was only fifty years ago. It’s ok to look back now and again. My last concert? Pearl Jam
Saw/Heard Hot Tuna last night and they closed with this. I have loved this song for nearly 50 years now ! And they opened with Too Many Years which is a beautifully sad song they recorded with Airplane in `89 when they reunited for the project. Great bookends to an awesome night of Hot F`n Tuna ! Jorma was playing the 70s songs with all the guitar effects originally added back in the day which I loved !!
Sammy was by far their best drummer IMHO. Very tubed-in to their sound. Bravo to everyone!

Jorma and Jack on 4/16/23 at the Skokie (Illinois) Arts Center. Looking forward to it. Do miss Pappa John tho. Met him once after a show at venue: Vegetable Buddies, South Bend, Indiana late 1970’s. A gentleman. Can’t quite recall who he was performing with at that time, Heartsfield maybe. His was a sweet and unique sound that I’ve not encountered since.
Really appreciate these 'Tuna videos. I saw them a couple of months after these shows in Chicago at The Auditorium Theater. I was super lucky to score a couple of front row tickets, not scalped. Sat right in front of Jorma & looked Papa John right in the eye when he prowled the stage & stopped right in front of me. Best place in Chicago for sound!!

There's good stuff out there. Gotta hunt for it. I could list some, but suggest NPR radio(PBS). Half the fun is looking for stuff...like when I'm driving a load into Minnesota 5 years ago and hear what I thought was newly discovered old Led Zep, only to find it was Greta Van Fleet playing live from a local station!
You never know. You're right, though; Born in '57, I was blessed to live in the best eras of music. I've always "specialized" in rare & unheard of stuff and my vinyl collection of thousands of LP's is my favorite source--NOT the streaming internet audio diarrhea brainwashing crap.
Don't know bout you guys out for me, this is still my love. Sitting there, watching these guys play so beautifully, and so happily just rocks my socks off to this day!!

Once again, confirmation that the 70s had the best music. I got this album back then because of this song.. now recognized the title but forgot the tune. Wow.. just as good as then and a live video to boot. THANKS for uploading this and to youtube for putting it in my playlist.
AND just now.. after 50 years it hit me.. before taking off in various directions, intro notes sound like "Cast Your Fate to the Wind" (Vince Guaraldi, Schroder on Peanuts, plays it with his trio on youtube)

Did you know that Vince Guaraldi was friends with the Grateful Dead in the early days and appeared on the photo on the back of Aoxomoxoa? He jammed with Jerry a bunch, even in a band that included Mike Clark of Headhunters. He did a lot more than compose the these to Peanuts!

I saw The Airplane with Papa John, and then the acoustic version of Hot Tuna, including Papa John, did a halftime show, and the full Airplane came back for the finale. On of the very top shows I’ve ever seen and I’ve been going since the early sixties.

Played with two of my friends Buddy on drums and vocals, Rick on the guitar and myself on bass, we called ourselves SHTA and that would be Substitute Hot Tuna Association. We had a freaking blast and had an amazing following that just loved it. That's all we played and we were perfect at it, if I do say myself. That was back in the mid 70's to 81 , 82. To this day I turn the bass down on the recording and play along. Great Memories 👍

Caught these guys the night after this show at SUNY Binghamton, and then my 1st Dead show a week later in Buffalo. A sophomore at Alfred State at the time, it was a phenomenal time for live music, with SO many other killer bands in their prime. btw- that GD ticket was $5.50! ;-)
