Snow being handsome and hot is like a reverse femme-fatale, mainly to subvert the whole “being ugly means being evil” and “being attractive means being good” trope.
Femme fatale is about a beautiful seductive woman using her charm to manipulate men into doing what she wants (most of the time it’s about evil things).
Snow is a handsome man using his charm to manipulate people (especially the audience) to drop their guards and believe that because of his beautiful body and face, there must still be a good in him, even though he’s evil af. It’s like a passive aggressive response from the writer and director to those dark romance genre like 50 Shades, 365 Days. You know, the whole criticism that “If Christian Grey was ugly and poor, the books would be labeled as horror, not romance”.

@@brad6546 What I meant is that those characters in 365 days/ 50 shades did evil things but were portrayed as good guys simply because they’re rich and handsome. If they’re poor and ugly, people would consider them horrifying.
Now, in case of Snow, he’s handsome but the book made sure to portray what he did as evil things as it was. And he’s being handsome mainly to challenge the audience to overcome their pretty privilege bias “because he’s attractive that means he’s a good guy” thing.

Some critics of the movie said that it was an stretch that it took the organizers of the Hunger Games 10 years to realize that a likable and good-looking contestant would give them more rating, but if you think about it, before Snow the people from the Capitol saw the games as a punishment/display of strenght first and as a TV show second. The movie is about how in a deshumanizing society empathy and cruelty aren't as opposite as they should be, they both become two face of a coin named "espectacle"; its about how an autoritarian regime does the jump from "we're cruel because its a practical way to mantain our power" to "we're cruel because cruelty is profitable". Snow feels empathy for a tribute and instead of taking it as a call to change the system that inevitably leads to the tribute's death, he sees empathy as the wining card, the secret weapon that will facilitate his rise to power

I don’t think he was ever a rebel, I just think he was selfish. He didn’t cheat on the HG to save a human being or because he was against the concept of it. He cheated to be a Victor and to win money.

Or when he wanted to briefly run away w Lucy and live in the woods or whatever. I’d agree he’s not a rebel in a true sense of it like trying to be free from oppression he’s just rebellious to escape consequences and for self gain.

16:20 - I actually liked how unexpected the ending felt, when his true colors are finally revealed, to the audience as well as to himself. As someone who read the book again right before I watched the movie, it was great going into the theater knowing his inner thoughts and why he did what he did. But I almost wish I could have gone in with no prior knowledge. Even with my past knowledge, I had to keep reminding myself, "he's not the good guy, don't fall for his act". It was hard not to root for him. The whole point of his character is that he is so attractive and charming, and you want to believe that he's the good guy, but he's not. We know who he becomes by the time of the Hunger Games. And if Lucy Gray Baird is the songbird, then Coriolanus Snow is the snake.

I watched the movie first, and my goodness it did so good with everything, I liked snow almost but not in the end. Then I read the book and had his inner thoughts, he wasn't good. ngl I tried to read the book a few weeks before the movie came out but I completely failed and only got to about halfway because I was so bored. After seeing the movie, I DEVOURED the rest of the book so I could understand Snow's character more after seeing what happens in the movie. Have never had that happen before. I think either one alone is underwhelming but both the book and the movie together = INCREDIBLE. I've never experienced having two separate media that are the same story (with the movie actually being very faithful to the events of the book) that somehow complement each other so well. I felt that the movie actually made the material interesting and engaging in a way that the book fails to do. However, the movie on its own lacks Snow's inner monologue which can only be understood from the book. I would quite honestly recommend people follow what I did and read some of the book first, watch the movie, and then read the rest of the book.

I had the same experience except I watched the movie first and then started reading the book for the first time afterwards. I honestly think that the movie really helped me be as invested as I was while reading the book, It was like watching the extended cut of the movie with extra scenes and more insight to the characters. I love the movie (I work at a theater so I went to watch it like 7 times lol) but lowkey I appreciate the book so much more because of the hidden story they got to tell. I wish there was a way to portray snows inner monologue/small callbacks/references in movie form without making it boring to consume. Either way I love how the movie turned out I just hope the producers release the 4 hour extended version because I need more Tom Blythe as snow ❤

    Point of note
After Lucy Gray, music was banned by district 12's new commander (who replaces Hoff shortly after Snow returns to the Capital) who said it caused trouble
The reason singing doen't occur again, it is because music was banned
So Katniss sings on her own, which she inherrited and learned from her father whose descended from Lucy Gray.

I like the books more cause I sympathise with Snow too much in the movie, thinking I would do the same thing for self preservation. He seemed really redeemable and just insane cause of the things that happened to him. If only they show Snow living with Sejanus' parents, that would've disgusted me a lot more, or maybe I'm just easily manipulated by his charms. Who knows? 🤷‍♂️

  • @amolove24

The funny thing is that snow is so close to getting it. Like he sees the horrors of Dr. Gaul’s experiments on people, he himself gets into the arena and experiences the horrors of the games (for like less than an hour but still), and he’s surrounded by good people who are against the capital (Sejanus, Tigris, and Lucy Gray) but it’s all overshadowed by his superiority complex and his view on humanity. He thinks he is the best humanity has to offer because he’s capital while also believing that the capital control is needed because humanity is “barbaric” without it (similar to how Dr. Gaul believes that the arena shows “humanity undressed”).

      other unintended parallels:
the 75th hunger games was when katniss shot her arrow and destroyed the arena shutting the hunger games down and essentially catapulting the revolution forward (cause it was always ongoing it just wasn’t wildly as successful until they had a symbol to rally behind i think), ultimately winning the districts their liberation after overthrowing the capitol.
it’s has been 75 years since the Nakba and Palestine and Palestinians have never before had such an outpouring of international solidarity from a significant majority of the global community till now
also the hunger games was literally inspired by the Iraq War and US involvement in it

I agree with you, I don't get how the ending could be unexpected. I mean, we factually know that we will turn in to a dictator and he has demonstrated throughout the movie how self-serving his actions are, so to me, it was so obvious that he would kill Sejeanus and Lucy Gray at the end...

  • @samaravillalontavizon7206
    @samaravillalontavizon7206 ปีที่แล้ว +28

Honestly I could see all the seeds for his maliciuosness in the movie from the very start, and I haven't read the book. I do think that at least part of the audience wasn't paying attention, which is very telling. His words and actions, from the get go, were so obviously selfish and disturbing, that what amazes me is that a lot of people did not notice or somehow found him sympathetic. You CAN have some empathy for him, of course, and even hope that he will wake up, but it is so blatantly obvious that he does not have good or altruistic intentions. Ever. AND we even had other people like Tigris and Sejanus to compare and contrast him with. From the beginning, he resonated more with Dr. Gaul and she with him. That...wasn't a sign for you? When he suggested to make a spectacle of the tributes...that wasn't a sign for you? When he played into the racist sh*t about people in the districts in like scene 3...that wasn't a sign for you? When he insulted Sejanus (his "friend") in the FIRST ACT for speaking up about the games and was always condescending to him...that wasn't a sign for you? When his classmate died and he carried on with an assignment for the games as if nothing had happened...that wasn't a sign for you? His SELECTIVE interest for Lucy Gray and disregard for every other tribute...wasn't a sign for you? And even when he displayed unnecessary cruelty to Bobbin in the arena (no, what he did was not the only thing he could do to survive) and said he felt powerful for doing it...that wasn't a sign for you? I mean, damn. To me, the fact that some people got distracted or manipulated by his looks, charm, weaponization of "empathy", his so called "romance" with Lucy Gray or his way of justifying himself only adds irony and layers to the movie. If you need someone's internal monologue or some kind of stereotypical, dripping, obvious EVIL to see reprehensible actions, then...f**k. It is so scary how we can overlook things.

SO TRUE!! I haven't read the book before I went to see the movie and I LOVED it, as it was fascinating to see how such an evil character started out. I come out of the cinema and realise there were so many people who didn't like it, were bored by it, was taken aback that Snow turned into "the villain"... like??? It goes to show how most people are so blinded by attention-grabbing action and flashy good looks. All the people empathising, defending and simping over Snow is just proving this book's/movie's point. If Tom Blythe wasn't Tom Blythe then suspicions about his intentions would've been a given from the start.

Great video! I really want to watch the movie now, maybe i will have time to do so soon. Thank you for your effort you put into the video.
I think a lot of people either forget or never learned that dystopian fiction is inherently about the present. It is never about a hypothetical future. George Orwell did not "predict" anything, he just saw things that were happening in his current day and exaggerated them so much that a reader HAD to notice them. Like, the red scare, control of citizens, propaganda for a war, aggressive nationalism.... And it is the same with the hunger games. The books are so good because they are ACTUALLY WELL CONCEIVED dystopian literature - not like most of the knock-offs, which create bascially a fantastical world without having anything to say about the real world. Suzanne Collins massively critisises the way media dehumanises people, how the rich leech off the poor, amorality of entertainment industry and much more. She, as an author, actually has something to say, and she say it with the help of metaphors and allegories.
It annoys me so much when people read dystopian literature and either call it a "warning for the future", or just simple fiction without anything to say. So, thank you for taking the time and commenting on the paralels between real world and fiction!

In the movie I think Snow snitched on Sejanus not to just further his own goals because in his eyes he saw it as Sejanus betraying, because he knew him and his family would be captured by the Capitol, and in his eye he saw Sejanus helping the district woman as betraying him, so he justified snitching on Sejanus by telling himself that Sejanus would have killed me so it's fine, but I do think that Snow cared abt Sejanus because he does blame Sejanus's death on himself bc in the end of the movie he says he killed three people. One thing that i loved about the film and book
Was the discussion between Snow and Gaul about power
We get to see from Gaul the influence she would have on Snow as his mentor
But Snow takes the lesson well...
After this he revirlaized the games
He made everything about building the tributes into celrbity idols
So everyone makes it to the capital alive, everyone has food and medical coverage
Because having less or sick tributes is not good for ratings or betting
He also changed it so previous tribute winners would mentor the new tributes
To prevent capital citezens getting emotionally attached or compromised by a tribute like Snow did with Gray...
He also created the victor houses in each district, so Victors would be ostracied from their districts and the people
Living in laps of luxury compared to the rest hoping it would make then hated and despised by their own districts to prevent victors from gaining a lot of public support in the districts
He wanted them to be vlauable in the capital only as athletes of choice
But powerless and distrusted in the disricts to prevent them uniting an uprising.
    Also as for sympathizing Snow...
You made the best point...every time snow is given a choice between helping Lucy for doing the right thing or doing it for some reward
The movie and book made it so there never was one choice.
Even after Highbottom says he qill block the prize from Snow
Gaul tells him she will talk to Straebo Plinth (Saganius's father) if he saves the son and he might still get the prize...
Everytime he does something the book/film makes sure we know there is another factor open to him.
He always chose the path that wuld benfit him, but he was able to use the "for the right thing" as justification to himself and others
Till the end, where he no longer cares about justifying himself beyond his own control.
    Brillaint.

Thank you for doing the important work of 4D research and bringing to light all the butt-based names. 🙏This was a funny and thoughtful ANALysis. ✨ in the lawn was by Snow's dad.🦉📖 For real though, nice parallels between all the things. Also. Something I noticed that was more prominent in the book but still alluded to in the movies was that Coriolanus had a good singing voice, too. Lucy Gray's singing was from a place of feeling, connection and expression, but Coriolanus' singing was controlled, technical, and was used only when it served a concrete purpose (when asked to perform the anthem as a patriotic demonstration). The different perceptions and applications of music definitely goes into the whole power of symbolism.

This is a much better analysis of the hungers game reflection of current american imperialism, and by proxy, Israels colonization of palestine. It does annoy me how badly hollywood and the reviews crave to depolitize this franchise, while it being an obvious thing since it would inherently be against Hollywood's interest as an American war tool, but to see the audience over and over fall for it is sad. I remember my teacher allowing us to do a book review of the saga in our montessori monthly book discussion but only to prompt us to discuss its depiction of the media as a political tool, and the dehumanization of districters and dissonance between those in the capitol and everyone outside the imperial core, and how desensitized they were to see their own districts send children to die, and how its all what we currently consumed ourselves, including th3 fancy celebrity weddings and movies such as THG, all this in 6TH GRADE, so its always annoyed me how much adult fans still discuss this as a complete fantasy setting, instead of a heavy reflection of our political climate

my feelings on the movie…. it’s like. sometimes with adaptations it’s clear the filmmakers are simply trying to churn out as near a replica to the book as possible without regard to the translation of the actual message, whereas others take the time and effort to adapt the literature into a film that is faithful to the heart/soul/message even if not a 1-to-1 recreation of the events.
unfortunately i found this movie to be the former. it wasn’t bad, per se, but it was all spectacle and mindless recreation of plot. i didn’t get any of the thought provoking philosophies of the book, and they failed spectacularly in translating snows character.
tbf it is tricky to turn a first person narrative into a screenplay, especially of a character as deeply 2 faced as snow. but that’s why changes have to be made, and dialogue or expressions added to prod at the depths of his character.
idk as a movie it was fine. as an adaptation it fell flat.

I loved this deep dive! I dunno if I'm the minority because this book captured my interest so well, and I know myself enough to know that even without watching the movie first, I would've felt the same. People have criticised the book or Snow being bland, or making everything around him seem bland. But I was so fascinated by his strategic analysis of others and frankly delusional thoughts, I genuinely don't understand why people aren't also interested. Though I agree the movie being paired with the book is a fantastic decision, and it may be why that's the direction Suzanne chose to head in for Sunrise on the Reaping!

Abt the Snow character thing. Ngl I’m not sure how you got the reading that I feel he is just poor and broken tbh! I felt i spoke in this about him showing selfish narcissism from the start of the movie and quotes of him showing possessive/cruel to counteract people who think him flipping out on Lucy at the end was ‘unexpected’. I do think the book is more obvious about this but the movie was quite clear in his portrayal of the character. Was it not explicit enough?
