    What a great fight! One of the best and under-appreciated fights around! Peters is a beast, and toney himself admitted that peters was one of the hardest punchers he faced. Still, toney will snipe you, but he ain’t fighting 170 pounders here. Toney has one of the best chins, ever, in boxing. And skill as well, not just a chin. JT really doesn’t get the credit he deserves as one of the best ever. Long time fan, use to watch JT back on USA boxing, tuesday night fights with Sean Ogrady. Had him to beat Roy but it wasn’t to be. Back to the fight, a great fight! Take care AB, we’ve been together for a long time as well. Always a good voice for boxing.

I would be more concerned with his speech after this fight, showing signs of being punch drunk, that being said, one of the best "natural" talents in his heyday..............too bad at the lighter weights he was not more diligent n his training

    This is why james toney is an all time great... he is not only one of the elite defensive fighters, but his chin is just as solid as his defense... Every time a big heavyweight has landed flush power right hands on toney (which rarely happens anyways) he has stood up to it and continue to fight on the inside... From holyfield (doesnt matter if you are washed up and old, you still keep power, which is the one thing no one loses with ageing), to sam peter (as seen here), to rydell booker, to hasim Rahman, and to dominic gun or watever his last name was... no one has been able to knock toney out and let alone down... ohhh, I forgot john Ruiz

      Even when someone landed flush on Toney he would always put that little bit of a roll to defer the blow so it could never truly compound. Attribute that to him spending 90% of his time on the back foot.

  • @chrismorgan2800
    @chrismorgan2800 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I just realized that in all the dozens of toneys fights I've seen, I have never seen him intentionally foul anyone (impressive that he didn't foul holyfield after being head butted ALL NIGHT LONG by him) and I have NEVER seen him complain to the ref about anything and lastly, I have seen him fouled throughout his career as with any boxer, but he never made a big deal of it, never put on a dramatic show, never sought out revenge on his opponent. I am 46 and I remember watching the Nunn fight, throughout that fight the commentators talked about how great Nunn was doing and made it seem as though Tony's win was pure luck. That was one of the first fights I had ever watched and accepted what the commentators said. 10-12 years later, knowing a thing or two about boxing that I didn't know a decade prior, I watched that fight again, and it was astonishing to see the subtle things James was doing that the professionals didn't see any of it or didn't want to. When watching Toney fight, you really need to be zoned in to notice that the punches aren't hitting him, it make look like they are but in the replay its easy to see that they aren't hitting him, James just moves as little as necessary when slipping bunches. And to make it more difficult to see those little things, he uses the shoulder roll, letting punches slide along his body, or the side of his face. The glove of the opponent.may be on James's body while he shrugs them off, but he is in no way absorbing those shots.
    James Toney and Ricardo ' finito' lopez, Mexico's greatest fighter of all time, he was perfect!

    I once thought Peter won this fight but was i wrong! It took a while for me to notice the superb crunching counterpunching of Toney busting Peter in the face. And also his excellent body punching number he did on Peter. Peter hardly landed anything really significant in this fight. Toney was making him miss left and right. Samuel was landing but missing mostly. Great victory by Toney, unfortunately he didn't get the decision.

    • @donjohnson3888
      @donjohnson3888 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think a big part of it was the PERCEPTION that one of Peter's punches was doing so much more damage than any of Toney's. It's probably a reasonably accurate perception, considering Peter was a proper real big heavyweight and James was a middleweight at one point, but Toney took the big man's shots so well that I thought the scoring of Peter's punches was a bit disproportionate. It's like one of Peter's right hands was worth five of Toney's, which doesnt seem very fair imo. James took those shots.

    5-4-3, James Tony.
    Several close rounds (*) and one with a point deduction (-). It came down to what you preferred: the crisp, hard shots by Tony, or the devastating power punches of Sam Peter. There were times Tony looked out of it, hanging onto the top rope to support himself, or staggering in the ring even, or being pushed back several feet by a right or jab of Peter.
    In the beginning, Tony was just popping Peter with crisp shots. I felt bad for the big fellow. Then Tony got rocked by a clubbing right (kept getting caught after throwing ill-advised left hooks). If Peter threw more shots, however, he could've won this fight outright since his power was on the verge of overwhelming Tony a few times throughout the fight.
    I don't blame anyone who gives the fight to either guy. It was that close.
    On a side note, what's terrible about this fight is that you literally see Tony's brain being damaged in front of your eyes. He should've never gone up to heavyweight at this stage in his career: he was too slow and out of shape. He rightfully gets the glory that such an exploit won him, but the cost was way too high, IMO.
    Tony: 1, 2, 6, 8*, 11
    Peter: 3, 5, 10, 12*
    Even: 4, 7, 9-

    Sam Peter was exposed and even though he would clearly win the rematch, it was clear he was not and never would be an elite fighter.

    A significant robbery that killed the heavyweight division, it also robbed the world of the best heavyweight fights in years and the most entertaining and exciting performer the heavyweight division had since Ali. But the boxing insiders were to busy fueling there negative agenda against the Rebel, the Outlaw and the real Peoples champion in James Toney following the Ruiz NC.Testing positive of a banned substance administered by his medical team proven in court that it was because got back in the ring two early from the process of healing from his surgeries. Rushing to get back in the ring to quickly after missing a year and a half in his first three or so years as a heavyweight. Can you blame James Toney for pushing for a fight so soon, for wanting to comeback so quickly knowing that he missed out on 2,3 or even 4 fights in his first 3 years and knowing damn well they were prime years in his heavyweight tenure. That sparked the resurgence of the negative agenda from inside the boxing world against James Toney that had ever so slowly faded into the background almost ten years following the Jones Jr loss and Jackie Khallen incident. Toney had only been free from those chains, the blackballing and the robberies of the late 1990's for merely two or three years at this point. 4 screw jobs later and once again blackballed from the rest of the best James Toney's prime heavyweight tenure would fade with no true big fights or ranked opponents coming beyond 2009... Boxing screwed itself, James Toney is still one of the greatest fighters to ever live and he has the type of legacy that is known just as much for fighters and promoters alike fearing him, ducking him and being protected from him as he is known for his triumphs and a legendary record especially for such a modern fighter spanning the most deadly weight divisions.

Peter had a point deducted so to give him the score 2 of these judges did they are saying he won 9 rounds. I don't see how you can give him 9 rounds of that fight.

      O yeah you're completely right, I forgot about those scores. Seems they needed a job and knew the right guy or something. and yeah he fought beautifuly this fight, but I can't understand what happened with James on the 2nd fight, maybe Peter just came oout more ready?....

    • @jplatnuim
      @jplatnuim 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @AkKnowledge100ENT
      @AkKnowledge100ENT 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      mareks mezalis
      If you look at the 2nd fight guys, it is much like many rematches, especially in the heavyweight division with two big punchers, yes Toney is a big puncher. It was a much closer and more calculated fight for both guys, Toney clearly won this fight by a wide margin, Giving Peter anymore than 4 rounds in this fight is a disturbing mistake in judgement. Peter only had a couple moments, those moments were only as big as Toney made them and allowed them to be, he wanted and wants Peter to have confidence at some point so that Peter will throw and come forth so that Toney can exude his mastery of the Sweet Science, if Peter was a drone and never had to be played, then Toney would never be in trouble because he would have killed Peter literally while standing. Peter has never been the same guy since 24 rounds with James Toney, he went from never being KO'd or ever shook to what? 9 knock downs and at least 3 KO's since ? and those announcers kept on about how James wasn't hurting Peter? Toney destroyed Peter the first fight and a pugilistic mind gives Toney the 2nd fight as well, an uneducated and young boxing mind may give Peter the 2nd fight or a draw...

    One thing Toney loved, 🍔
    One thing Toney hated, weight cuts.
    He was sour when he was fighting at 160-168 due to constant hunger and dehydration. Once they started scheduling his fights around his weight instead of his weight around the fights he became more jolly, funny, and likable, but still stone cold in the ring and when it came to fighting. One of my favorite boxers of modern times. Competing against huge 230-250lb natural heavyweights at his size was really something.

    I can't watch this entire fight the outcome still pisses me off to this day. The last great vintage Toney performance.

    Great fight!! James is impeccable , his movements are so fluid , marvelous jab aswell , Sam has none - i'll admit that when i saw Sam's movements in the first two rounds , seeing him flat footed , stiff and slow , i was scared cause knowing the Monster he trully is , i thought he was sick ...but no , Sam picked Up at round three and was loose , more fluid and timed aswell , he connected some good clean punches troughout the rest of the fight but i found James performance really good in front of that True Gorilla of a Monster ...james is lucky he didn't get knocked out ...mind games changes the all vibe , predators got different skills , some are scary and some are Scarier ! 🙈🙉🙊

      The only true comment. James is bold and strong but dont take the monster beast fighter samuel Peter was in this fight and most times Tony get hurts he holds on to the ropes they deduct his punches Peter had more great punches that landed and hurt Tony. Tony put out a good fight tho his jabs are amazing. But no robbing . Samuel Peter won this fight

    when toney was a middleweight he was one of the best defensive boxers, this is when he was in his prime

    James Toney had a better spider roll defense than any of the Mayweather’s.

      Jacob Blackamore No I’m not. Looking at it from a man that boxed, and trained versus a fan standpoint, anyone in the fight game will say the same thing.
      Plus, to give Toney more props, his opponents were better than Mayweather’s and Toney coming up from 160 to the heavyweight, he took a heavyweights shots very well. That’s rarely done.

      I think Toney won but Peter did put hands on him, since the Rahman fight it was clear he was passed his prime. Peter legit hurt Toney in the 3rd. He landed some big blows
