I can say without a doubt that Tom Durkin's calls were the thing that first made me fall in love with racing as a kid. Not only did he call a race like no one else, but he's a tremendous broadcaster. It's hard to go back and watch, but his handling of the 2006 Preakness is one of his finest moments as a broadcaster. He calls the race like a pro's pro while always returning to where all our hearts and minds were. Coincidence that Frank Mirahmadi took part in this. After having the pleasure of hearing him call Saratoga every week this summer, I think he will one day be a fantastic national broadcaster on par with Durkin.
Almost 4 years since Tom Durkin retire. I still go to TH-cam in order to hear him make race calls. The only guy that comes close to him is the announcer from the Fair Grounds. I miss you Tom Please , come back!
There are so many great calls that Tom made over the years. The first one I really remember was the first year of the Breeders Cup in 84 with probably the greatest finish of any Breeders Cup race ever, with Wild Again,Slew,O' Gold and Gate Dancer battling it out to the wire. The Belmont, with Victory Gallop and so many more.A true Hall of Fame guy.Even his calls on the last race of a card which could be Maiden Claimers or cheap 20K runners had the same enthusiasm.
Ironic, How many runs for the TC did he call, how many near misses. And the TC is won a year after he retires. Albeit at this point he'd quit calling the TC races anyway, and had just been calling NYRA races

I think Trevor Denman is pretty damn good, but nobody is as good as Mr. Durkin.
Carlos, I feel the same, Tom Durkin had no equal
Carlos, Durkin will be back this Saturday, to call the Belmont Stakes, on FoxSports 1. LFG!
89 classic is a no brainer, that call gave me chills
agree, best ever
ABSOLUTELY!!!
"Afleet Alex just ran by Giacomo like he was standing still!" Belmont 2005.

Agreed. I always remember in midstretch of that 84 Classic Tom saying gate dancer in a really cool way.
His 2004 Belmont call is on another level, I don't understand how that is off the list.
Agree. The 04 Belmont and the 01 classic were his best calls.
The 2005 kentucky derby his voise is so high
Winning the Arc and then missing the BC Classic by a whisker has to be the greatest or one of the greatest accomplishments in racing history.
I've always thought the 1989 Breeders Cup Classic was his best call.
His call of the 2001 Kentucky Derby (Monarchos) was GREAT! Absolutely GREAT! It should've been in the top 3.
1989 Breeders cup class is with Sunday Silence vs Easy Goer has to be in the top 10. Silence wins by a desperate neck........
He made that one sound like Easy Goer had a late shot which he didn't.
@@raygordonteacheschess5501 I believe because Easy Goer was coming like a freight train. A jockey like Cordero would never lose with Easy Goer.
Durkin's 2005 Kentucky Derby and 2004 Belmont Stakes calls should have made this list.
Tiznow wins it for America is the greatest call in horse racing history.
1994 Travers blows that and all of them away# chills chills chills
One of the kings of racing 👑
How is the 1989 Breeders Cup clsssic not on here?
Rodney Ayew absolutely 100% correct.
1987 BC Classic for me. THE TWO DERBY WINNERS, HIT THE WIRE TOGETHER !!
Definitely his best call. The echo made it more stirring
Wish he would've stayed another year to call the 2015 Belmont Stakes and Classic..
Who is the guy that did it last year?
Adam Laufer Larry Collmus

his 2005 kentucky derby call was the best ive seen.
Best of the best met him numerous times a first class guy!

With three furlongs to go Sunday silence on the outside of a threatening presence Sunday silence holds on........
.
Incomparable unbeatable cigar
how did you people miss his arazi call in your top10...."bertrando is stunned"
"And Arazi runs right past them!"
"Here indeed, is a SUPERSTAR!"
Love Tom 👍👍👍
There goes Easy Goer and now he's beginning to roll..........
I liked the, "Easy Goerrrrr, with ONE, FINAL, ACCELERATION!" a lil better in that race.
1987 BC Classic (Ferdinand v Alysheba) should be there. Also 2003 BC Turf race call (High Chap / Johar) dead heat is absolute perfection.
Best was 2009 Derby when he found Mine That Bird after he'd shot five lengths clear on the rail.
What happened to ARRRRRRRG !!!!!!! Lol
I love that one
How about doremifasolatido ?
Aussie, Johnny Tapp is the best race call to ever call a race.
1988 Breeders Cup Distaff----best
“Big Sandy” is a mammoth complex.
Tom Durkin
A legend ,wish he would have covered some British racing.
Makes the hairs on my neck stand on end.
2000 breeders cup classic
