Why Is The F-35 Lightning Slower Than The 64-Year-Old F-4 Phantom?

  • The iconic Cold War-era F-4 Phantom aircraft is still in use in some air forces around the world, but left US service in 1996. It may be a surprise that this old Vietnam War fighter jet is significantly faster than the advanced fifth-generation F-35.

    It was the F15 that was developed to counter the Foxbat. The F4 entered service in 1960, whereas the Foxbat came into service in 1970. Great video otherwise.

    The match up between the USSR and the US was the MiG-21 vs the F-4. Also, the retirement of the F-4 in 1996 was half correct. The sunset of the F-4 with respect to service in the US was 2016/2017 with a bang as it ended its service as a target drone as its final flights. The USAF had a farewell tour on the US air show circuit as a piloted aircraft. (I have bittersweet memories when I look at those pictures from the Oregon International Air Show and the Olympic Air Show.)

    Mach 1.6 is the F-35 non reheating top speed. What the reheating top speed is.. we don´t know, but probobly a bit faster.
    It worth saying that the main limitation of top speed is compression heating. The faster you go, the more compression heating it is. But also the more compression you have the more compression heating you have.
    High compression is the key to fuel efficiency. So top speed limits efficiency. Well sort of.
    There is a new engine that recently was flight tested that had a sort of post compression bypass. This way the amount of compression can be changed over the full envelope. Allowing for both very high top speed as well as very high fuel efficiency at lower speeds.

    The absolute top speed isn’t all that important for an afterburning aircraft because it would take almost all of the aircraft’s fuel in order to get to the altitude that allows such a speed.

  • @theoldar

    Actually the F4 was NEVER designed to be a dogfighter. It didn't even have a gun. It's job was to kill at a distance. The speed component was so it could act as an interceptor if needed.

    The stealth is debatable, especially with the switch from just sound driven searching systems to actual visual AI searching systems. The other caveat that you're missing in this is that speed still allows you to get missiles to altitude. 😅

  • @kaijenkins4513
    @kaijenkins4513 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Also the F-4 isn’t hitting Mach 2 in a combat load because missiles, bombs, pods, tanks, and even pylons all create weight and drag while the F-35 can still reach its top speed do to its weapons being stored internally.

  • @nigrolan9298
    @nigrolan9298 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Why the Phantom for comparison? The F-4 was planned and developed as carrierborn Interceptor with a missle-only loadout. The ideas of that time concentrated on the expected dominance of missles and do deliver them as soon as possible as far as possible from the own fleet to minimize the threat of getting it hit by enemy missles. By the way, the F-14 was built by the same principle. That's why it is fast. The F-35 is expected to be stealthy enough to get close enough to get it's weapons working it's magic. "Fat Amy" had to swallow a lot of compromises on it's way and only time will tell if the governments who bought it, have been fooled by snake oil salesmen. One is sure: it won't be as easy as in the past to adapt its role to new realities without throwing away the main principle of stealth and therefor the main reason for its high costs.

  • @davidgapp1457
    @davidgapp1457 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I am unsure about the F-35. Granted it is incredibly sophisticated, but the range is disappointing (combat range around 680 miles or 520 miles for the F -35B). Also, if you are operating in stealth mode, you are essentially limited to the inboard weapons - which means a maximum of 4 missiles on the F-35B and 6 on the F-35C. For long range intercepts you need something faster with more endurance than the F-35. Mach 1.7 requires, I believe, reheat and/or hot core operation, both of which are thermal limits, meaning you can't stay at Mach 1.7 for extended periods. Meanwhile an aircraft like the Eurofighter Typhoon can super-cruise at Mach 1.5. Personally I think it's foolhardy to focus on only one aircraft type - the F-35 may be considered multi-role but that doesn't mean it excels at all of them. For instance, as a tank killer the F-35 turns out to be a huge disappointment. One of the reasons the A-10 is loved by our troops is because of it's deterrence effect on enemy ground movements. The A-10 can loiter and coordinate attacks with ground controllers, whereas the F-35 has to dash in, fire, then withdraw. Equally, the slow speed of the F-35 detracts from its abilities as a long range interceptor - the F-22 is a far superior machine in this respect. I'd categorize the F-35, perhaps unkindly, as jack-of-all-trades but master of... not much.

    In PRACTICE, the F-35 flies fastest. During real missions conducted in stealth mode -- i.e., with all missiles or bombs stowed internally -- the F-35 is free of the drag that slows 4th gen jets well below the speed they can fly at when naked. As a consequence, in real missions the F-35 usually flies faster than than every plane except the F-22.
