As a Turk, I thought the video was clickbait for Turk viewers before watching it. Then I watched the whole video. This is a masterpiece that tells all of Turkish air defense history. You have no information only KAAN, also you are well-informed about details of parts. I appreciate!
I reckon they used their involvement in the JSF program to develop the aircraft, after getting kicked out of the program due to the purchase of one of those S-300, S-400, or S-XXX whatever Russian-designed air defense radar systems.
@@tomsmith6513 it's a little more than that; no European nation (despite participation in the same program) has a domestically produced 5th gen aircraft that's had its maiden flight
5th Gen is an US defence marketing made up thing. The defence systems aren't evaluated like that even in the US. That's why the F22 are scrapped and the F15 built with the latest upgrades.

@@peterweller8583 peekaboo's response was to your incorrect statement that Turkey is #1 in UAV technology. The US has had combat UAV's way before Turkey built their first one. The MQ9 Reaper and a couple of others secret UAVs they have developed recently are more advanced than anything Turkey has. Germany and France also have very advanced military UAV's, most of which have been kept a secret. So it has nothing to do with alliances that you speak of. He is disputing your false statement. Turkey's UAV's just got more exposure recently because they were used in Azerbaijan in the war with Armenia, and in the Ukraine against Russia, so the world got to see what armed UAVs can do in the battefield which happened to be made in Turkey. You cannot seriously compare a $2M Bayraktar TB2 to a $32M Reaper. BTW, all the Turkish drones were shot down in Ukraine after the first couple of months, and several were shut down in Libya before that by decades old anti-aircraft weapons.
Guys "Khan" is also from central asia, it means a kind of "king" it is written "Han" Kaan is also kind of a derivative from Han, "Khagan" means the king of the kings.
Turkish is coming from Central Asia as well. But khan, kaan and hakan have different meanings in details. Khan (han) is king, kaan is king of kings like emperor, hakan is conquering han, when big enough he will be kaan. There also other noble class like bey(beg) like lords, yabgu like prince of princedoms.
As an American, I'm already more impressed by Turkey's efforts than by the Chinese. The KAAN is an extremely ambitious goal, and I wish Turkey the best of success!
As an American, i was expecting chinese military industry to surprize us with cutting edge technologies and def. not the turks. I am impressed and tbh kizilelma has am amazing design. Keep it going turks!!!
For a middle power, the achievements of the Turkish Aerospace Industry is a marvel to behold. So much progress in many areas in such a short span of time that rivals the great powers. KAAN can only get better from here. An excellent analysis Gus.
And they have the right strategic stance: develop independent capabilities to be independent from other actors on the world stage. Europe MUST shift its armaments stance in the same way. It has nothing to do with being a 'bad ally' if one develop its own weapon systems. We see it currently what it means if weapon systems have 'strings attached' by their country of origin. And since more and more weapon systems rely heavily on programs and electronic interactions ... it is irresponsible and dangerous to accept some kind of 'back door' in the systems that allows another actor to compromise them.
I want to remind the influence of Turkey from Imperial times. Turkey has direct political influence from North Africa to Middle east, from Balkans to Caucausus, From Central Asia to South Asia. Even when Turkey build a standart featured weapon with reasonable price many countries would prefer to buy it from Turkey due to historical connections and mutual interests. Because Turkey wouldn't impose sanctions to those countries like western manufacturers do. So if Kaan will successfully enter the mass production not only Azerbaijan and Pakistan will buy it. Central Asian countries, Arabic Gulf Countries, North African countries would buy it too. And more production means price per unit will be cheaper. That would make the project more sustainable and price competetive than western alternatives.
No one in Balkan has any political influence or brotherly relationship with Turkey. We all hate it. We are not middle east or North Africa. Only albanians are somewhat tied cause they are muslims...

Watching the video prepared by an expert like you, whom I value, made me happy as a Turk. In general, I have nothing to object to and you made very accurate analyses. However, there are some points I would like to add: The first prototype of an aircraft is not normally flown. However, TAI started flying both KAAN and HÜRJET aircraft since their first prototypes. Deeply adopted new technologies play a big role in this. Simulations, digital twins, etc. Normally, confidentiality is taken into account on these prototypes. This first KAAN shows too much. The reason for this is that the aircraft will undergo more changes. The second prototype will fly soon and you will see a completely different nose. Certain countries produce aircraft with different design priorities. For Türkiye, priority is given to a warplane that will cause damage if hit. We can understand this from the thick neck of the plane. This section, which is most susceptible to breakage in most other aircraft, is targeted by IIR guided missiles such as the Israeli Phyton 5. (Most of the structural weak points were strengthened.) It is a multi-mission aircraft that will start its life as a stealth-designed F-15 and can progress to the F-35 and beyond as its subsystems mature. But this will take time and will be shaped around a newly established ecosystem. I consider it highly likely that European defense and aerospace projects will benefit from the efforts of this ecosystem and the modern subsystems it will produce. In short, KAAN and HÜRJET projects will also benefit Europe. I wish you to make more videos on the Turkish defense and aerospace industry. I am especially curious about your opinions on HÜRJET, which is a candidate to be the modern interpretation of the much-missed F-5 and MiG-21, and has a reliable design and reliable technologies.
@@waynesworldofsci-tech no it wouldn't be an export. Who would the export to that wouldn't prefer either American or European or Chinese or Russian designs? Eastern Europe buys Russian. South East Asia buys American or indigenous. Literally only Africa seems possible. But they mostly can't afford fifth Gen.
@@sparkzbarca Um; no. The Russian aerospace industry has massive issues. The Chinese have huge quality problems. That leaves the Swedes. Yes, the Gripen is fifth gen without full stealth features. It’s nearly as stealthy as the SU-57. The Korean one will be good. But expensive. The US is too expensive. The Rafale isn’t as good as the Gripen currently, though it is low observable. The problem is the computer systems. If Turkiye can produce Hurjet and Kaan for a lower price than the competition, while offering relatively similar features, you have a market. Say Turkiye manages to see 50 Hurjets. That will help lower production costs for your own planes, but also help cover development. That’s what the Russians did, until their engineering went to hell. That’s why India is working on their own design. They helped fund development of the SU-57 but decided to drop out, bought Rafales, and are now working on their own designs. The country Turkiye would be competing in that market with is India.
@@waynesworldofsci-tech In fact, the genie is out of the bottle in the defense and aerospace industry. But no one has noticed this enough yet. The USA, which has extensive war experience, was the most reliable and sustainable supplier in the field of defense for a long time. As technology developed, it consolidated this position. It has now entered another period in which it will decline as technology develops. Many countries are still waiting in line for the manned F-16 fighter jet. There are significant question marks over the F-35 aircraft and these are also expressed by the countries that use this aircraft. (ALIS, signals intelligence claims, etc.) Even if the USA gave the next generation unmanned warplane for free, there are many countries that would not trust it and buy it. Seeing this, the USA wants to penetrate these markets through countries such as South Korea and Türkiye. (A change of management would instantly turn the relations between Turkey and the USA, which seem to be at odds today, into besties.) For this reason, it does not hesitate to give engines to planes like KAAN. Of course, chips and other subsystems that are difficult to produce locally. Therefore yes. It looks like it will be a very qualified export product...

Definitely hyperbolic at this stage. Not enough is known about the jet especially regarding its actual stealth level and situational awareness, the quantities they will be able to produce and at what (real) price are unknown also. Even if its a superior aircraft in every way to the F-35 if it cannot be made in sufficient numbers its operationally irrelevant. So all these things make a massive difference.

Thanks Gus. This was a very thorough analysis made from only from a few pictures. There are only a handful people in the world that can analyse an aircraft like you can. Lucky us
Turkey should have bought the S400 last, after they’re done reserve engineering the F35. But still, as an American, Kaan is an impressive accomplishment in a very short time span. India has been trying to design their own indigenous jet engine for decades now and counting.

I personally think that the horizontal stabs moving so much is due to the fact that the pilot wanted a smooth, easy takeoff, instead of pulling up next to the ISS straight away. Those stabs are as big as an F-16's main wing. When they want to go up, you shall go up, come hell or high water!
During the U.S. ATF program, one of the prototypes tail surfaces began violently twitching while moving on the ground. It was determined that the FBW system was reacting to expansion joints in the taxiway/runway. The sensitivity of the system was tuned to reduce sensitivity. Each minor impact by first, the nose wheel and then the main gears, introduced small pitch changes that the computer interpreted as up or downdrafts that it attempted to null out by deflecting the horizontal tail to counter those forces.
I honestly don't know what gave me the impression that the kaan was a small thing as big as an F-16, but your comment prompted me to look it up and oh my LORD it's gigantic!

Thank you for one of your best overviews to date. You never state what you do not know and, as an expert, some things which you DO know cannot be disclosed until manufacturers say so. Speculation is a way of losing trust. However, inference from design features is fair and what stands out to me is the amount of generating power built into the KAAN. I know that UK and Turkish engineers interact on several ventures and we have had a large Turkish population in Britain since 1918. I am pleased that Brit Turks were never treated as inferiors as in some countries and can only recall, in my 75 years of life, minor tensions when the Cyprus troubles were were in progress. I was a young schoolboy then and my grandfather, who had fought in WW1, always commented that 'an Ottoman's word is his bond' -- even though his first contact with Turkish people was being at war with them. He said that they were like Brits and Russians in codes of honour. This has been my experience too. Back to the generators: shades of Project Tempest? It is highly probable that designated KAAN planes will be drone carriers and controller and that is one explanation for the weapons bay side doors and boxy shape of the fuselage. It would nice to think that Ankara and London could resolve their engine squabbles and perhaps decisions should be with co-engineers and designers rather than politicians. My own feeling, over decades, is that British aviation was all but killed off by association with the USA and that the last straw was the F-35 scam against the only 'Tier 1' partner. BAE, unfortunately, left it perhaps too late for Turkey's liking, to divest of US access to components, even though BAE US division was mainly concerned with land weapons. Rolls Royce undoubtedly has refined thrust vector engineering, perhaps to its peak at present, and of course invented it -- hence Japan joining Tempest but when one considers how Turkey totally rebuilt the F-16s it reluctantly bought, (thus escaping OEM bullying) perhaps it can make something as good on its own.
An excellent comment. I agree with you on all points. If America calls a country a strategic partner, we learned long ago to pay attention.: ) Greetings from Turkey.

That sort of HS instability (wobble) is caused by software and incorrect compensation for latency in FBW. It's definitely not the first plane to have that problem. Kind of a series of overcorrections chasing it's tail (pun intended) in a latency loop. Rather dangerous really. But entirely fixable. Interesting design. Small central tail solves some aerodynamic & raydome considerations in a tidy fashion. With F110 engines, it's going to have some significant range limits, ~or~ payload limits. Aerodynamically it looks good. But it's quite difficult to fit everything '5th gen' inside a sleek looking airframe. I guess they're addressing that with sheer airframe size.
This and Korean projects show that the future is bright for non-traditional aircraft producers, simply because the current turbo-jet engines stuck aviation in the Mach 2 region.
"Wow, this video is a game-changer! The depth of insight into the new Turkish KH fighter is mind-blowing. It’s amazing to see how far Turkey has come in aerospace technology. Can't wait to see how this will shape the future of air combat!"
What is most important is that Turkiye achieved alot and demonstrated that it has an nationaly developped aircraft with almost all electronics and software domestically built. It is the foundation and the rest is just related to time and money. In at most 10 years, Turkiye will be domestically fully independent and it will have all relevant weaponary of great powers, submarines, air defence systems, unmanned systems in air, land and sea, combat aircrafts and aircraft carries. I bet Turkiye will be nuclear power as well. The question is if the world has 10 years. If ww3 is to happen, it has to be in next 3-5 years, otherwise US and EU will superiority military force, technology.

It would appear that the rudders and vertical stabilizers were underestimated, but that is (or at least used to be) a common "error" in the aicraft industry as a whole. Other than that, there is the possibility that the flaps could instead be flaperons, used when the ailerons+tails are not enough. There is a world of possibilities there alone. As always, wonderful, beautiful video.
sanctions breed independence, such was the case in history with countries such as Taiwan, Israel, South Africa and even Iran, each were forced to home develop their alternatives in their military aircraft when faced with sanctions
The Venom 30 mm gun was designed by AEI in the UK. Sadly AEI were bought by CANIK last year. Those mass figures must mean that Kaan will have a relatively low fuel load. A hugely impressive achievement though.
@1:45 the tail wobble is undamped movement common with this style of aircraft. The F35 actually bounces at this point in rotation because the wobble is dampened out.

An alternate to your classic "Kaaaaaaan!!!!!!" opening - th-cam.com/video/UwPqAHNv2HE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=aUkJs6Xsv8TlQJgb Every time I read a comment about the Kaan, and its weapons/sensor suite being inferior to other Western equipment, I am reminded of the time just before WW2 started and the Japanese became involved. Every Western Power just poo-pooed the Japanese Military and their equipment as being inferior copies of Superior Western Equipment. Then Pearl Harbor happened, and everyone was "Surprised" at the quality, and lethality of Japanese military equipment.
But its objectively correct to say that these Gen 1 sensors/weapons are inferior to Western equipment, which has been around for many generations and multiple rounds of lessons learned and applying real world data into their upgrades and design. Its silly to assume that some of the first sensors/weapons systems the Turks ever created would be better at the first try. Also, "Superior Western" powers didn't say the Japanese "equipment as being inferior copies of Superior Western Equipment"... the Russians learned that the hard way a few decades before that.
As a Turk, I thought the video was clickbait for Turk viewers before watching it.
Then I watched the whole video. This is a masterpiece that tells all of Turkish air defense history. You have no information only KAAN, also you are well-informed about details of parts. I appreciate!

@nahitakyel you think Turks being first in UAV technology is unfortunate? What would be the fortunate senario in your head?
we have a saying in Turkish. bad landlord makes you a house owner.
and surprisingly, every landlord in Turkey is bad and we can't own houses.

Turkey has achieved remarkable success in various sectors in the recent years , be it in defence sector or civilian fields. Future belongs to them , just stay focused and avoid any kind of conflicts and disputes , be it very minor in nature.
Watching the video prepared by an expert like you, whom I value, made me happy as a Turk. In general, I have nothing to object to and you made very accurate analyses. However, there are some points I would like to add:
The first prototype of an aircraft is not normally flown.
(Most of the structural weak points were strengthened.)
It is a multi-mission aircraft that will start its life as a stealth-designed F-15 and can progress to the F-35 and beyond as its subsystems mature.
Turkiye is doing some neat stuff. This could become a nice export product line.
@@waynesworldofsci-tech no it wouldn't be an export.
Who would the export to that wouldn't prefer either American or European or Chinese or Russian designs?
India has it's own program, South Korea does, Japan does and China does and Russia does and Europe does and America does.
The middle East buys American.
Western Europe buys American or indigenous. Eastern Europe buys Russian.
South East Asia buys American or indigenous.
Literally only Africa seems possible. But they mostly can't afford fifth Gen.
@@sparkzbarca
Um; no.

No it was unintended. And was fixed in 2nd flight

Almost forgot that YT encourages hyperbolic thumbnails till I saw this one.
Amen.
The latter quote has been permanently co-opted by Ryan Reynolds.
Thank you for your review. It may be the most unbiased review I've seen so far. Naturally, everyone will praise their own country's aircraft. What matters to us is its contribution to us in times of war. Otherwise, anyone can claim that their aircraft is the 10th generation, no problem. The KAAN TF-X is an aircraft made for our future, not our present. I am happy that we will no longer be dependent on anyone in the defense industry. See you in the war arena...
Very thorough, educated and informative synopsis as always. The promise at the start is definitely kept.
I'm 24. The first thing I thought of when I heard the name was the Wrath of Khan :)
I'm 40 and the first thing I thought of was the Wrath of Khan but the Family Guy cutaway version "edited for goats".
You are correct. Kaan and Khan are the same word of Turkic origin. One wrotten in Turkish, other in English
"They put creatures in our bodies."
Loads of people know about - " KHAN", but never seen a movie itself.
This scene has a life of its own, now.
Ps. I didn't see it myself, but I'm familiar with the story and importance of it for fanbase
Im 53 and i was thinking of your mom.. Hows she doing these days?
It's good video. Thank You.
Meteor ramjet will not be integrated on KAAN. We are currently developing 2 missile altenatives ramjet versions (one solid fuel other liquid fuel) air to air RF guided missile as you said in the video with name Gokhan Ramjet. Also an other anti radiation air to ground ramjet solid fueled missile is under development (Akbaba) will be integrated on Kaan for future blocks.
If America calls a country a strategic partner, we learned long ago to pay attention.: )
Greetings from Turkey.
We are also waiting for a Baykar video from you. They do incredible work. They put the world's first fighter drone, Kızılelma, into mass production. They produce their own cruise missiles. They announced that they would invest in engine production. I don't even need to mention TB2. They have very innovative and different solutions.
Kızılelma seri üretimde değil,tb2 yenilikçi bir tasarım veya mühendislik sunmuyor.Fazlaca baykar hayranlığı.
@@Farwolldoru ama tb2 iyi fiyat performans
Love the enthusiasm for the art of design! The requirements of a fighter plane create big challenges and require excellence in design and that is what excites me too!
I love turkiye bcuz of its history thats been altered by certain ppl.
They have always been on the side of peasants , good chance they will stand with peasants again, thats why i have the biggest hope and wishes for turkiye success, their success is my success !
Nice comment. I think they already mostly fixed the wobble at the second flight.
Thank you for your honest and politically neutral analysis.
Best regards from Turkey. 🇹🇷🇹🇷🇹🇷
Full agreed. Judging by aircraft production and orders in the world, the third war may break out between 2030-2037.
Can't be everywhere at once.
Only 10 minutes into this video and I have to stop and salute you! What a superb overview of intersecting geopolitical, national, and tech-industrial policy currents over the 1970s-2000s to explain the rise of TAI and, more broadly, Turkey's sovereign military-industrial base. It is not without relevance for understanding China, Russia, and India's military industries as well. Your marriage of political objectivity (neither pro- nor anti-NATO or EU propaganda) and military-technical expertise is unmatched!! And now back to the Kaan...l
I totally enjoyed that, thanks. It's the most info on the aircraft that I've seen in a single place. Also, I propose that one of the prototypes be named Ricardo Montalbán.
Kaan is the Future of many Air forces
Kaan projesinde 15 bin mühendis çalışıyor, hintli, pakistanli, amerikalı, İngiliz vs konusunda en iyi mühendisleri seçti, emekli olanlarda Türkiye ye geldi 1000 yabancı tecrübeli mühendisimiz var. 6.nesil insansız savaş uçağı Kızılelma'yı bitiren seri üretime birkaç ay sonra başlayacak Türkiye 6.nesil insansız Kaan için portatif yapımına başladı.
Considering the first F22 Raptor flight was in 1997, Turkey isn't doing too bad.

I mean, yeah. Turkey started development of indigenous aircraft in the 80s, and except a few cruicial parts (like the engine) could start building advanced aircraft in 40 to 50 years, with the sanctions the us put on turkey it is kind of an amazing achievement
This probably is the most and the best informative video on KAAN. Thank you for this great work. ✨
Why did you not mention the Turks being denied Patriot systems, ie the reason they opted for the S400 system instead?
Because USA writed whatever narrative it wants to
They WERE offered Patriot, but they also wanted the technology transferred so that they could build their own - from scratch. The US did not trust Turkey to keep the technology from Russia and China and so we said nope. That is why they went with the S-400.
he said.
That’s not true. Turkey was offered the Patriot system but the Turks wanted extensive transfer of its technology as well which the US refused.
Truth shall set you free… Be truthfull … technology transfer came about when some pentagon and some senators who are not Turkish and NATO unity minded for 9 years from Obama’time unilmthey bought the S400’s …..Truth will set you free do not forget that….
Bad ass development. Turkiye is goin strong forward! You never wanted to be in confrontation...
Arkadaslar, ben senelerdir Korede kaliyorum. Bizim bunlara gosterdigimiz ilginin 10~20%'yi biz goremiyoruz burada. Lutfen dikkat edelim.
@millennium7* Your productions are a delight because of how you merge artistry with humility. My BS detector never goes off when I take in your work. Bravo!

Turk can emerge in different era like they always do ..I'm remembering when Turk making their drone and many also doubt it ..well they make it..the drone don't seem to be advanced like game changer but it's not bad ..they achieve what they aim..
The Turkish made drones was game changer in Syria,Ukraine and Azerbaijan. Now those drones changing the game in Africa. Now they have Akinci, Kizil elma ( unmanned fighter drone) and mini b2 ( anka 3). Turkey is atleast Top 3 in drone making. Now they are making tb3 version that can land and take off from helicopter landing ships.
Are u really a joke?.Which country can make game changer drones better than Turks?
Thanks
Thank you!
As an American, all i can say is:
Good luck! 😊
Congrats Turkey, very capable and underestimated country..Good choice to take matters into your own hands and go through the painful development stage, rather than begging uncle Sam for his overpriced F-35 NATO callsign RustBack. Will be following this projects, very interesting.
You do understand that's a British design. The British had developed their own stealth fighter and the USA convinced them to join the F35 program. That's why UK is the only country that can mod the F35(with Israel).
Turkey collaborate with BAE and KAAN was the result

Maximum respect for the Turkish industry .such a program is a technonological risk . As a first fighter built ex the indian programs Marut and Tejas Marut was a semi failure be cause of the engines..two similar projects of 5 th generation aircraft to follow in the next years the south korean KF 21 BORAMAE and the indian programAMCA
There are only a handful people in the world that can analyse an aircraft like you can. Lucky us
impressive plane! very few countries have the capability to take on this kind of project.
The Venom 30 mm gun was designed by AEI in the UK. Sadly AEI were bought by CANIK last year. Those mass figures must mean that Kaan will have a relatively low fuel load. A hugely impressive achievement though.
Well don Turkey an amazing effort i really like the Kaan its beautiful
I’ve been anticipating and waiting for a video about KAAN from you for so long. Great unbiased video.
@1:45 the tail wobble is undamped movement common with this style of aircraft. The F35 actually bounces at this point in rotation because the wobble is dampened out.
Every country should build their own weapons when possible. Turkey is an ally to the USA and I wish them luck.
Türkiye will not buy F35. We know that the F-16s will not be delivered. You will also have a delivery problem with F110 engines. Now the choice of US air elements is over for us. There is not even a little bit of confidence left. You lost the oily customer because of the Armenian and Greek lobby congressmen. Thank you for our benefit
Update December 2024: Turkey purchased 40 Eurofighters so no need for the F-16 Vipers
Awesome video, you Turkish Shrill!
But seriously the amount of effort you put into researching and producing videos is very admirable. It is not a flood of misleading numbers and stats. No political or virtue signaling. Good context and details. All very relevant.
Your focussing and accuracy are unbelievable. 👌
Great coverage. Most detailed I have ever seen. Well done.
In a region with a neighbor which threatens everybody with nuclear annihilation while not acknowledging its nuclear power status Turkey has to be strong not only by developing its own fighter jets and its own missile defense systems but also consider the same approach that threatening neighbor has been taking for decades. As the Turkish saying goes: “Show the (profile of) the stick from under the garment”.
An alternate to your classic "Kaaaaaaan!!!!!!" opening - th-cam.com/video/UwPqAHNv2HE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=aUkJs6Xsv8TlQJgb
Every time I read a comment about the Kaan, and its weapons/sensor suite being inferior to other Western equipment, I am reminded of the time just before WW2 started and the Japanese became involved.
The zero air plane was an American design, but the Japanese were a higher bidder.
