I don't know why this popped up on my feed 1 year later, LOL! I could save you the trouble, the Optiplex and Inspiron BIOS have a lock on the power draw from the PCIE slot. If it draws more than X amount of power it trips the TDP limit and goes into shutdown or boot loops where the lights come on and it just turns back off... It is a "feature" designed to not allow you to upgrade your Dell desktops "for your own safety" (quoted from a Dell employee in the forums). But you can always buy a new model! LOL! I think that is the point right? Can we all agree it's a really horrible practice? The newer models no longer have the TDP limit in them, but getting definitive list of which models are affected and which are not is going to be difficult at best.
Great to see Optiplex community is still going strong. Although I have moved out of my 9020 SFF, I am still using its i7 4790 CPU and still strong enough for 1080p60 gaming.
So true. I had this issue with an older Dell Vostro. It never got an updated UEFI BIOS so like Polaris AMD cards and newer wouldn't work no matter what I tried

Hi Danny. I bought a RTX 2060 to slap in an Optiplex 7010 and I had the same problem you had. I spent 12 hours adjusting bios settings from legacy to secure boot etc, but I couldn't get it working. The GPU worked in my other PCs including my Optiplex 3020. I tried installing 2 GPUs at the same time, I tried everything. Then I traded out the PSU with an older model that I had and boom. It booted up. The only difference between the 2 power supplies is the old PSU's 6+2 PCIe connector has actual 8 wires that go back to the PSU compared to the new CX600 PSU that has 6 wires and have jumpered the 2 grounds over to the +2 connector. I wonder if this jumper is not compatible with the PCI 2.0 slot??? Because that is the only difference and it now works. Maybe it is just a coincidence, but I am stoked that it finally worked for me, maybe it give it a try.
this gives me hope- I have an optiplex 990 and got the 3050 no dice on boot up. It looks like my system is booting up- no errors just black screen. My power supply also has the jumper. I'll try a new power supply next week.

I think I’m having this problem I’m upgrading my motherboard soon cause I have performance issues with a Rysen 7 2700x with 2060 the mobo is a b350 bazooka Msi
@@cloudx3975 b350 and a 2060 should have no issues. If you turned on fast boot by mistake some bios will boot and not enable you to enter them. You can either go to it via software from the mobo vendor or by hold shift as you hit restart inside windows and get into the uefi that way.
Not true. I have 2 Optiplex 7010 MT's with A29 bios that would run an RTX-3050 8GB using HDMI only. However, a 3rd Optiplex 9010 MT ran the RTX-3050 8GB using Displayport too. These all have a hybrid Legacy/UEFI bios with Secure Boot. Ironically, the older GTX-1650 won't run at all on my 7010 Optiplex machines... weird
You can try to force the bios to use the integrated graphics, then Boot to windows plugged in to the igp and switch over the displays after you sign in. Had to do that on a old optiplex with a rx 480 because it only had uefi support
I think it's possible that in some dell pc's, even if the mobo offers iGPU capability, it may be hard-locked by Dell b/c they included a discrete GPU. I think I've encountered this scenario on some business PC's after I tried removing their GPU to put in other PC's, it was quite a few years back though and going off memory. I don't think I was able to find a Bios/uefi setting that allowed them to work w/o a dGPU.
@@linuxlover_8436 Many of the manuals will say which GPUs will work specifically on the mobo. The 6500XT is apparently a laptop GPU... so maybe it isnt as demanding as a 3050?
@@heyitsdazy I don't have any experience w/newer pre-builts, except an HP my father purchased about a year ago. The older pre-builts I dealt with never included a list of compatible gpu's. If they include this now, that is a very good change imho. Even though I prefer AMD, it seemed like those older PC's I dealt with were generally more friendly to Nvidia GPU's, but I realize now that it was probably a card by card basis depending on its architecture. I think if one is going to upgrade an older pc, it would be best to see if anyone on a forum or YT video successfully paired the card they are considering w/their motherboard before ordering to minimize the frustration. The only thing I know of the 6500XT is that if video editing or live streaming are important, you wanna stay away from it. If you only plan to game, then it will do ok there. Most would choose a 3050 over it I'm sure for those reasons alone as most probably want to at least live stream or plan on getting into content creation/video editing.
Just a guess but maybe checking to see if ACPI 2.0 is enabled? Seen some older nvidias have the same issues with pcie 2.0. Otherwise ya i'm also at a loss, one of those weird issues.
The issue is because the 2nd gen/3rd gen dell boards and some other motherboards dont support Secure boot, which isnt supported in the 2nd and 3rd gen oem boards. Haswell, 4gen OEM boards support Secureboot which allows the new card(the RTX 3050) booting
Were both your sandy bridge systems using xeon processors? It might be a solution to try, as those boards "technically" weren't meant to house xeon CPUs as those were intended to be enterprise chips. Maybe there's something missing in the microcode that doesn't allow the xeons to initiate the GPU? Personally, I'd try with it an i5 2400 just to make sure that wasn't the issue.
Got an RTX 3050 for my son's old Optiplex 990, upgrading from a GTX 970. I have done everything I could think to do and could not get it to provide signal to the TV. The same RTX card worked in my old HP Z400 machines with no issues. :-(
I'm sure most of the viewers hence subscribers are way better versed on these Optiplex systems than myself... Having said that I would appreciate a little help on a good if not the best GPU choice for gaming on a 7050 model... Currently running 16gb DDR4 and a i7-7700 processor... Hats off and a big thanks before hand
Few suggestions, first update the BIOS on those Dell motherboards to the most recent version available, which appears to be version A24 from 2018. Under Important Info on the BIOS page it shows that multiple sequential updates may be needed for versions prior to A10 and A4. Settings related to UEFI/legacy boot mode and CSM can have an impact here, but note this can also cause windows not to boot depending which mode it was installed under. The other thing to try is to remove the "Dell factor" from this completely, pull the 2nd gen CPU and ram and find a used 60 series board (such as Z68) to drop them in and test with (update to latest bios here too). Last thing to note going forward is that Ivy Bridge (3570K/3770K) is the first gen to support PCI-E 3.0 (with a 70 series board such as Z77). Best to stick to that or Haswell (4670K/4770K) or Devils Canyon (4690K/4790K) going forward for the DDR3 stuff.
The point of the Video was to 'Upgrade' a Dell Pc. If he removed the Motherboard for another one, it would defeat the purpose. The other reason is so that other people that are trying to upgrade a Dell will know that a Rtx 3050 didn't work in this situation... Like he said, most ppl won't have extra hardware to swap and see what is the problem. I understand that he asked for solutions as well but I'm pretty sure he meant a way for the RTX 3050 to work with the Dell. (Motherboard and Processor) Edit: Like he said, It's most likely the Pcie lane being 2.0. Although it's weird that the 3060ti worked.
I think testing the pcie 2.0 on other systems to be an interesting topic, which Danny did ask for others to test and comment. Is it just Dell? So getting a z68 or whatever sandy bridge Mobo and testing is a possible future topic for him.
Possibly, but it's not a problem with an actual 75W RX 560 running at load, which I tested. Also, when a card is just getting into windows, it's barely pulling any power at all
@@nerdonabudgetbut if you forget to plug in the additional power connectors it throws up a notification and tells u to shut down the pc and plug in the additional power cables
I always wanted to get an optiplex pc, since here in Greenland, trying to build my own pc is not easy as just order parts and done with it. Many online retailers don't send to Greenland, and we don't have Microcenter or other huge stores about pc-parts in the country. Ordering from online, shipping cost always around $60-75, and could take up to 2-4 weeks to arrive, if we're lucky with weather.
Also, i think you failed to show that it's not that it doesn't post. It's just that it boots with the integrated graphics, and the gpu doesn't get recognized on windows nor on bios, bios says literally the pci-e is empty. Have you tried to connect it in the x4 slot with an adapter? Some people say that could work.
I know it's probably a long shot that you'll reply to this, but did you use a riser cable to use the second slot? I'm having issues with my 750 not being detected and am hoping this is it for me
The reason why it won’t work on the other pc is because they don’t support dx12 also you should see if the pcie on the 3050 is compatible as well as if there is any new bios update for them and then try them
Please try the following: insert the 3050 in the not working optiplex and use the hdmi/dp-port of the mainbaord. Maybe you can get the error message. I had a comparable error 1 or 2 years ago.

some cards don't support legacy vbios , and the sandybrige motherboards don't all support uefi vbioses thus a work around is to pop in 2 gpus so the motherboard reads the vbios off of the legacy card and boot into windows then the rtx card should work , to prevent pci e 2.0 8x speed due to pci e saturation you will need to use a gt 710 with pci e x1 slot or x4 slot if there is a available slot otherwise the only option is software - duet with refind , just look up some info on "Make UEFI Graphics Card work with Legacy BIOS Motherboard"
Think I've seen someone mention it but these older Dell mobos prior to Haswell are picky AF when it comes to accepting newer cards. A lot of times it's a pre UEFI BIOS situation like I had with an older Vostro. Ironically....I usually have issues with AMD cards and not Nvidia go figure 🤷♂️
If you had issues with AMD cards, specifically the ones without any power cables to the PSU, then the latest bios revision fixes that issue (particularly with the RX 460 and 560, I had that issue with them before)

Probably going to sound like a dumb question, but are your bios updated to the most recent version? It's interesting that the 3060 works, and not the 3050.
Yea it's to the latest one, which fixes a problem that's been known for cards like the RX 460 and 560 that are powered only through the pcie slot. Those used to artifact or crash when on older bios but on the newest one available they work fine, I reconfirmed that as well
@@nerdonabudget I'm baffled by the 3060 working , and not the 3050. I know it's not really feasible in the current market , but I'm curious to see if other brands will work , or if it's specific to that brand of GPU. What brand was the 3060?

Interesting... perhaps I'll have to test the 3050 in my 3020 as well. It's working fine in my 9020 test bench. But I don't think PCIe Gen2 is your problem. The 3020 is also PCIe Gen2 like the x90 series, as is the 3010. The H61 and H81 chipsets are both limited to PCIe Gen2. Were you running the 990 in UEFI mode? I know that can cause problems with some newer GPU's refusing to run in legacy mode. And if you are, the UEFI implementation in those systems is rather buggy. I'm kinda' leaning towards a UEFI issue here, but no matter, you should be able to run the tests you want with the 3020 since it's Gen2. You can check in GPU-Z, but it should be running at Gen2x16. Wish I had an 790/990 to test the 3050 in now.

Would you look at that a new card is not compatible with a 10 year old Dell system. It has to be some kind of bios issue for sure just not liking the 3050. Or maybe its just that 3050 it may work with another since the 3060 Ti worked.
This kinda stuff just simply happens now and then. My Asus Strix GTX 960 4gb has issues working in one of my FM2+ crossfire boards. When it is installed it will randomly cause the system to hard crash to a black screen. Only happens to that card when used with that motherboard. Motherboard works fine with any other gpu.

Anyone know a fix? I'm also using the upgraded 315W PSU.
Hey Nerd on a Budget, i found a solution to your problem since i had the same issue. You need a fresh WIN 10 install (on the UEFI Mode/if available). After that you have to boot the Optiplex over the onboard graphics into WIN 10, then go into the windows device manager and disable the intel hd graphics (or something like that) then it should boot up properly wuith the RTX 3050 after you plugged it in. Some Dell Optiplex models have a bios restriction that block gpus with a high current and automatically switches the output to the onboard intel graphics.- I hope this fix doesn't come to late for you since the vid is already a year old. PS: You have to use the A22 revision(or newer) of the bios since this one's the only bios version that allows this.
I think so Beacause the optiplex is compatible with rtx 3050 same thing happens for me I used it one time It worked properly but after we used it for daily use it won't work after

But they changed some part of wattman API since fall 2022 and RDNA3 so instead it reads from vBIOS (no SPPT powerplay tables there).
I'll try a new power supply next week.

you can get issues where you wont be able to see the bios if the card only supports uefi on an old mobo.
Ironically, the older GTX-1650 won't run at all on my 7010 Optiplex machines... weird
I have a 9020 with a gtx 1650 but it’s not working
You can try to force the bios to use the integrated graphics, then Boot to windows plugged in to the igp and switch over the displays after you sign in. Had to do that on a old optiplex with a rx 480 because it only had uefi support
That dell has a xeon 1270 in it, no integrated gpu.
@@leemachiin well shit I thought it had a 2400 or something
So it would work in an optiplex with an i5 7500 for example?
@@ryleycannings6928 As long as the powersupply isnt a 150w-250 should be perfectly fine. Maybe some bios setting changes needed but would work
Were both your sandy bridge systems using xeon processors? It might be a solution to try, as those boards "technically" weren't meant to house xeon CPUs as those were intended to be enterprise chips. Maybe there's something missing in the microcode that doesn't allow the xeons to initiate the GPU? Personally, I'd try with it an i5 2400 just to make sure that wasn't the issue.
Got an RTX 3050 for my son's old Optiplex 990, upgrading from a GTX 970. I have done everything I could think to do and could not get it to provide signal to the TV. The same RTX card worked in my old HP Z400 machines with no issues. :-(
i'm guessing the reason it does not show video because that optiplex model does not support UEFI, and would not work if your bios is LEGACY
(Motherboard and Processor)
Edit: Like he said, It's most likely the Pcie lane being 2.0.
Does the dell optiplex 3010, 7010, and 9010 (3rd gen) use pcie 3.0? Or is it also 2.0
The rtx 3050 may need the full 75w from the pcie slot, sometimes those motherboards may only supply say, 65w

Did you ever get your pc built?
@@patrickgeagan9509 I did, a ryzen 3 with rx580 and upgraded to rx6600
Also, i think you failed to show that it's not that it doesn't post. It's just that it boots with the integrated graphics, and the gpu doesn't get recognized on windows nor on bios, bios says literally the pci-e is empty. Have you tried to connect it in the x4 slot with an adapter? Some people say that could work.
I had this same problem with my gtx 760 and all i did was put it in the second slot on the optiplex board and it works for some reason.
I know it's probably a long shot that you'll reply to this, but did you use a riser cable to use the second slot? I'm having issues with my 750 not being detected and am hoping this is it for me
No I just plugged it into the second slot but I think on my board the first slot got shorted out for some reason so I need a new board now.
Maybe it can't run at PCI-e gen 2.0? I know my Optiplex 390s I use are obviously 2.0 as well, but haven't gotten a 3050.
The reason why it won’t work on the other pc is because they don’t support dx12 also you should see if the pcie on the 3050 is compatible as well as if there is any new bios update for them and then try them
no... dx12 is only intalised with drivers.... and it should still post... (its also propitary windows sooo hardens my point that it should still post)

I have and old i7 2600k ,32 gb ram with a intel Dp67BG motherboard which has the same issue

I had a similar issue with a HP system with Sandy Bridge. I tried upgrading with a discrete AMD GPU and got a black screen. I tried powering on and off without any luck. I then left the system running for about 10-12 minutes and it booted to Windows without any problem!

Wish I had an 790/990 to test the 3050 in now.
i think my dell optiplex 7010 has a 3.0 pci, not sure though.

Hey man I’m from Ireland and I’ve been on ps4 for 5 years and wanted to switch to pc I’ve never been able to afford a good pc any tips.
So i have to use uefi mode and cant use legacy mode at all?
Not sure what the issue is but my rx 570 worked fine with a old i5 4570, I'm thinking its probably the Dell mobo and bios issues

But they changed some part of wattman API since fall 2022 and RDNA3 so instead it reads from vBIOS (no SPPT powerplay tables there). I'm wondering if it may be the Galax GPU BIOS🤨, the 3060Ti Eagle worked🤔 so it would be interesting to see if a Gigabyte 3050 Eagle works in the PCIe2 Dell also
I wish I had enough $$$ at the moment to get a 3050 to help but I don't have $599AUD to blow on one when another $69AUD will get the much better 6600
@nerdonabudget first I should thank you for this video because at 3:14 I got my answer. I have a gigabyte 970A-DS3P motherboard which also has pcie 2.0 slots and I need to upgrade the GPU and I am thinking of the budget RX6400 because I will need that GPU for video editing purpose, not for gaming. So, I was concerned whether my motherboard will support that GPU or not and here is the answer. Thank you so much.❤
Whens the next stream??
I upgraded a system from 8.1 to windows 10 and was using a hd 7470 and it won't post a image when connected but when. I use intergrated it works fine if anyone know how to fix this please reply and thank you
I wish more youtubers would cover newer Optiplex models. At the bare minimum, 6th gen intel. Every single youtuber is using these 4th gen ones and I just wanna see if a rtx 2060 will work with a dell optiplex 3040 (i5 6500) or 3050 (i5 7500)
Oh you rich kids with your trust funds😂😂😂😂😂
Because 2.0 slot never work even some 4.0 can't work with 3.0, but some do but 2.0 is old of slot
I Think you need to do somthing in the bios i had to do it when i installed a gpu in my friends dell
Can someone make a list of compatibility for a 790 MT?
Idk why my rx 6500xt won't display on my dell optiplex 7020 it has a i7 4770 and a 500w psu and the gpu is powered but still doesn't display can someone help me with it I got windows 10 and I'm new to pcs
So is it still available to run even on lower pci
