The Trump International Hotel and Tower in Chicago is an iconic skyscraper, located at 401 North Wabash Avenue on the former site of the Chicago Sun-Times. Designed by SOM, it features a distinctive three-setback design that aligns with nearby buildings and mitigates wind vortexes. Standing at an official height of 1,388 feet, it was among the world's tallest buildings upon its completion in 2009.
The construction used an impressive amount of concrete, with a fleet of 30 trucks making 600 trips each to lay the foundation. Financially backed by Deutsche Bank and hedge funds, the project faced challenges like leaks during foundation work and disputes over loan repayments.
The building spans 2.6 million square feet across 98 stories, housing retail spaces, a hotel, and residential condos. Its construction and financial troubles, coupled with controversies like lawsuits over condo sales and a 2020 incident where a man suspended himself from the 16th floor, have kept it in the public eye.
Despite its contentious history, the Trump Tower remains a prominent feature of the Chicago skyline and a popular subject for photographers and architecture enthusiasts alike.

Many people think the famous Trump Tower in New York is Trump's tallest property and building. However, the 664-foot-tall Trump Tower in New York pales in comparison to the 1,388-foot-tall Trump Tower in Chicago, which is Trump's tallest structure that he owns.
His properties are stunning.

you gotta respect the engineering went into building the Trump Tower
SOM always does amazing work. Too bad the finishing inside is awful. I've stayed in the hotel (while the rest of it was still under construction) and the expensive 2 bedrooms were pretty nice. But I did a job in one of the 1-bedroom $1M condo and it was as shoddy as a transient hotel room. The hallway lighting was cheap torn paper China balls or mismatched cheap square paper shades, kitchen plumbing under the tiny sink was being ripped out because it was badly leaking, window glazing was crumbling, a bathroom door wouldn't close because it was hung wrong, and the fake fireplace mantle was several degrees crooked.
This was pre-election 2016, and we could hear the protesters on the street from the 54~th floor with windows closed.
I made a 'crooked Hillary' joke about the mantle, in a small room full of plumbers, real estate property dressers and decorators, furniture movers, photographers and the guy hanging the flat screen TV (who had to slant it so it wouldn't look weird over the mantle). It didn't go over well.
SOM did a really great job on this. Beautiful design! ❤
I’ll never forget how both The Sun Times and The Tribune criticized the size of the sign,when they both had equally large signs on their buildings.
Such a great video. I used to work at 401 N. Wabash we use to call it the "Suntimes" I was lucky enough to meet trump and tiffany during the purchase. I actually got a tour of the example apartment before he did. It was incredible memory! Nice video!

4:12 30 trucks x 600 trips = 18,000 loads. Each load is 9-10cyd which works out to 162,000cyd of concrete which is definitely not accurate...
One thing nobody mentions - all that concrete and rebar (and the cute name for the bar on the 14th floor) creates a Faraday cage. Try making a cellphone call without standing right next to a window.
Nice coverage of this monumental building, including some interesting anecdotes, but n.b., the word caisson is not pronounced "KYE-sahn," but "KAY-sahn."

It’s a beautiful building and the people that work there are professionals. Stopped in there around 2014 with my son to use the bathroom, told my son they probably won’t let us in because we were all dirty and sweaty. It was summertime. We were at Navy pier. Much to our surprise, they let us into the washrooms we were finished in the washrooms were beautiful. I have to tell you when we were finished the manager of the bar. A female gave us each a bottle of water and was so polite. I told my son that’s good service that comes from the top down, Trump must be a pretty good guy. The politics I had are as good as their managers that vote for Trump.

Beautiful building but having the name on it ruined some of the beauty when they installed it. It doesnt need a name on it in general no matter whos it is.
I live in Chicago and the name on the building is a tourist attraction.
