I've always been a King's X fan but hated their mixes. Bob re-mixed a handful of their songs on The Best of King's X and did what I thought was a fantastic job. The drums are clearer. The bass is still rumbling, but more controlled.
I’ve known Bob for years and years and he is just the most humble and talented guy around! Just a total sonic legend !! I’ve even been lucky enough to have him mix tracks for my project and he really just elevated everything he touches! Great video!
How Bob talks about a plugin from the days of not having the capability to create these effects, but having to do them by printing a snare to tape ahead of time then matching the delay WOW This is why pro mixers are what they are and I’m in the box lapping up the up the capabilities of these plugins with no real idea of the theory behind it, we are so lucky to have these plugins today. There would be no way to do what I do without them, and now everyone is an expert, we owe so much to these guys. And Warren you and Rick are my favourite interviewers for this . When I get time you’re the first place I look for inspiration Keep it going
Bob is one of those rare producers that captures passion, and it does sell, as opposed to producers who capture something without passion, but will sell millions, anyway!, I hope this makes sense, cheers
I use Clearmountain's Domain on almost every mix. You can never run out of ideas for it and I think I learn something new every time I use it. I now have Phases and haven't even gotten that deep in it yet. But can't wait to just throw it onto something.
I am the Russian Dragon “guy in Texas” that Bob talks about at 20:45 in the video. Bob was always very encouraging about my Russian Dragon box. I used to do real (reel) tape flanging that Bob talks about in the video. We would flip the phase of one machine so that the “zero crossing” was a complete null. Of course, where in the song the zero crossing would occur was hit or miss - so you would have to try it 100 times before you got it to happen at the correct spot in the song! Question: On Bob’s new Flanger plug in, can you do “zero crossing” and can you adjust the time (spot in the song) of the zero crossing? Marius Perron
I remember when I got the Born in the USA on cassette the day it came out. Was so excited. Got it from Woolworths, jumped in the car and pressed play. That snare drum sounded incredible and still does. What a fantastic interview Warren.
I can hear why he went through the trouble to recreate these long gone MXR units. You can hear the original on Bowie's voice on "China Girl" from Lets Dance where he sings she says "SHHHHHH" you hear that flange kick in. Awesome!
I figured out once that the new MXR units don't sound the same as the old ones. The ones from the 70s and 80s had a much different sound that IMO is better,. Every year they changed and declined.
Everything is "just so"... The fact he could pull up a mix from 40 years ago onto the board he was currently using for a new mix and have it 95% there. The piano delay he created early in the vid appears on the piano channel of Born in the USA. Still using the same channel for piano 40 years later :D I really enjoyed the setup tour vid, but even hearing these small things makes a lot more sense of the setup.
What I’d pay to sit down with Bob for a day watching him mix. The guy is a genius! For that matter, I’d like to sit down with Warren as well. He’s no slouch himself. And, I mean that in the best way possible, Warren.
What a fab video. Everything Bob touches sounds superb. That album was huge at the time. Bob's job was helped a lot be the fact Adams had, and continues to have, a superb band and one of the best drummers in the business in Mickey and not forgetting Pat's great work in the drum chair on the album too. The Into The Fire album that came after Reckless was beautifully done by BC.
I so wish I had something clever to say. I got nothing. I am just in complete awe! Thank you so much, Warren. You love everything in a way that reminds me of who I am. Love you so much.
What I would give to get those multitracks. Bryan is my all time favorite artist, Reckless is a top 5 album, and Clearmountain is a legend. Awesome to hear these tracks solo'd.
The Russian Dragon was made by Marius Perron. 21:00 He still teaches in San Antonio. I was working in the same studio with him and saw the first prototypes. Nice mention!
Thanks to Bob and Warren for the great demo. Fantastic sounds, and obviously great songs. I am going to listen back this Born in the USA album. By the way, I listened to Wreckless last week, what a great and huge sounding record. Bob did a masterful job creating the sense of a live performance using effects. What a great mixer.
Everything Bob does sounds amazing! I really appreciate all of his knowledge and work. He’s a real blessing to the production process. Thanks Warren for Sharing this. 👍🙏🏻🇬🇧
Clearmountain has the perfect name for his legendary existence & thumbprint in the world of mixing. The 1 drop of his knowledge that ive gleaned from these type videos over the years has greatly improved my confidence & craft. It really should be fun as he says, thats why i love this channel & the music, engineers, & techniques i learn here. Salute to u both!
I WAS LED HERE BY THE HOLY SPIRIT- " HEAVEN": STEVE SMITH ON DRUMS, BRYAN ADAMS, BOB CLEAR MOUNTAIN - DOESN'T GET ANY BETTER. THIS FOR YOU MY BEAUTIFUL FELICIA ANN NEWBERRY 💜💜💜🌹🌹🌹🙏🙏🙏
I really like the look of the ModComp.. that way of being able to visualise the behaviour of the attack and release against the waveform is an excellent approach. I tend to be someone that twiddles with compression, knowing what it does, but not what the values are doing. And it means that I never know even whether I should be applying it.
What I can't wrap my head around is the lack of mud in the guitar solo from the Bryan Adams song. It's absolutely drenched in reverb and delay, but it doesn't seem to negatively impact the clarity and definition. I wonder how the EQ and filters were set.
I admire and trust Bob, he's my mixing personal hero... but guys at Apogee should cut down the price of their plugins, they are overpriced, out of the market. Such a shame, really.
why do the songs of the 80s sound COOL-REFERENCE? (console + tape) /// and now the 20s - computer + ProTools = and the sound is mediocre and bad-sounding NOTHING

Avalon tops the list for me. But I could pick from dozens more and be still happy with my choice. An effortless and humble legend !
I've always been a King's X fan but hated their mixes. Bob re-mixed a handful of their songs on The Best of King's X and did what I thought was a fantastic job. The drums are clearer. The bass is still rumbling, but more controlled.
Those two records by Crowded House are superb!
Tattoo You, Avalon and Tears For Fears of course and so many more!
All of the Waking up the Neighbours album is powerful clarity 👍🏾

I can never get over how understated Bob is. Just so casually "oh yea, let me pull up Born In The USA"
Haha exactly! Amazing!
Bob is a wizard behind the desk. Incredible to hear his thought process behind things.
Thanks Conor! You Rock!
What a humble guy. Also, getting an insight into those recordings is truly something else

yeah usually we don't get to see him doing stuff, just talk about stuff
a feature on the Reckless album would be awesome lot's of cool guitar parts with amazing tones.

the Stones stuff he worked on is timeless i still jave Tatoo You in rotation
It's a masterpiece!
"Run to You" is just one of the twin-Strat greats. It's like the Ventures drenched in 80s reverb.

What a great demo! I love the phaser. Could really think of a lot of things to use that one. Thanks Warren and thank you Mr. Clearmountain!!!
Thanks ever so much David!
to be fair we should give most of the love to MXR for that sound.
This was really interesting to see where the conversation went and the background stories.

Holly hell, I didn’t know Warren knows little bit from Russian language, appreciate this)
Awesome great music song. So sound great audio. Great lnterview.
Yes! That's Bryan Adams!!
Excellent! Quick question. Who discovered tape flanging?
Bob is such a genius thanks so much
He’s the best of the best!
I had no idea that the "Heaven" Rhodes sound was actually a Fender Rhodes. I always thought it was a DX7 double tracked to a straight piano.
I used to have an MXR rack, but I had 3 flangers and one phasor. It got stolen, unfortunately. I picked up "Phases" today!
And I told myself no more plugins until I mix a full album !!! So guess we don't do albums nowadays, so I'm free to indulge ? lol.
Haha I hear you!
Great Interview 👍
Thanks ever so much!
Those FX are awesome!
Nice soloed born in USA snare, load of lads now using downloaders to get it, chop it and use it 😂
Thanks ever so much! Haha indeed! I'm sure they will!
Great conversation between two legends, but man, those reverbs on Born will make me run out of a room.
Dry tone is boring
Wow thanks
Thanks ever so much
I wonder if the pluggin pitches down one signal a bit as well just like the physical slowing down of the tape when you touch the flange?
Would love to buy that broken AMS
