Marc Daniel Nelson, a Grammy-nominated music producer, is joining us again to bring you another tutorial. Today, he will be talking about reverbs.
Over the course of his career, Marc has worked with many amazing artists, including Jason Mraz, Colbie Caillat, Eric Burdon, Fleetwood Mac, Rusted Root, and many more! He has also produced music for a number of films, including Blade Runner, Wild Horses, Point Break, Father Figures, and The Vietnam War.
In today’s video, Marc will be showing us some of his favorite reverbs. Marc has had people asking what his favorite presets are, and that got him thinking about how he could duplicate them in the box. Using a Jason Mraz track, Netflix movie score, and a solo drum section, Marc will show us exactly how he achieves these reverb sounds. There has been over 5 decades of different kinds of reverbs, and in the past, it has been really difficult to duplicate them in the box, but lately they have been getting closer and closer! Because of this, Marc is able to show us how to achieve his favorite reverb sounds completely in the box. With these three different sounds, Marc will explain exactly what does what, and what he chose in order to create the sound that he did.

The Abbey Roads plate hit me in the feels hard!! It’s crazy that reverb could shift my response so much. I imagine that would’ve become a bit much for the first song over the whole tune, but it really sounded beautiful. The Bricasti (7th heaven) one sounds most modern to me. It adds a lot of space and depth but stays out of the way. Sounds less like an “effect”. Sneakier way of getting space and depth in the track :)

Hi Warren, again great lessons, but I have a off topic question, Plugin alliance has a promotion, I want to use one of the BX consoles, I can choose between a Focusrite SC, an SSL 4000E or 4000G, I have a home a A&H GL mix desk, but I want to upgade this with a plugin channelstrip in my ProTools, not sure which to pick. What are your experiences with these? Thank you very much. PS I still use a TC Electronic Fireworx for vocals. You don't see them much in studio's. I still use the Goldchannel mic pre, which is fantastic gear. My genre is pretty much Folk, sometimes soft rock.

Thank you for the video! One of my favorite styles of reverb can be heard on the vocals of The Eagles' 'Desperado'. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like a gated plate reverb, resulting in an up-front, compressed sound will hints of long verb when the vocal is hit hard.

It'd be cool to to do an in depth video on the correct use of pre-delay. I usually fiddle around until it fits, but its trial and error. If there's some science behind it, that'd be cool to see.

You do know that UAD is the Original creator of the 1176, and the LA-2A (after buying the patent from Teletronix)... right?? The 1176 was built in 1967. So yeah the company has been around for 50+ years.

@@spmdopelabstudio5663 I do..I was referring to the digital side of Universal Audio in terms of coding plugins...but thanks for correcting me there - that needed to be said!

Love it. Learned something new with the left and right 480 trick. I really love the sound of Capital Chambers #2 with the 44 on vocals. These videos are great. Thanks, Marc and Warren!

Hey... an intelligent, savvy and sensible demonstration of software using actual... music. Let me applaud all those concerned, Sir. whatever the tweet of the day, actual music played by actual musicians wins. But, of course, you have to be good. Bravo , Monsieur Nelson, de Serge du Québec :)

11:10 -- "Now there's two settings on this, a US setting and a European version. I have mine on the European version because I like the green better." Ha! Proof that even Marc Daniel Nelson is sucked in by GUI design.

You've mentioned many great reverb plugins in this informative and thorough video. However, if you could only afford one of the many that you talked about here, which one would it be?

i may be wrong ..but i think the over- use of verb is the single most telling sign of bad engineering ..just the blanket assumption that throwing reverb on everything makes it sound "better " ...trouble is...it usually does sound good solo"d...but horrendous in a swamped mix ...i personally love little to no verb on my stuff ...but thats my taste

“I don’t reflect for an emotional connection with” in regard to a reverb.
More of this in music today! Please. Placing an importance on creative elements.. Creating sounds, textures, layers and elements you connect with.. creating and cultivating the vibe. So important. 🙏
