I remember growing up in Phoenix in the early to mid 80s and hearing about the lost Dutchman's Mine before moving to Utah. I had completely forgot about it until now, thank you for unlocking and then explaining that memory.
Visited the Superstition with my family in 1980,and I remember it vividly. Didn’t find any gold, but I still carry a few small scars. On my right leg from kicking up a small barrel cactus. Some of the most beautiful country I’ve seen, along with the Rockies Mountains.
Fascinating legend! It's a legend none the less. You would think that such "rich" gold mines would have been found already with our technology. Even, if it wasn't the actual Dutchman mine, surely there should be more gold deposits in the surrounding area...
@dunkelmonkey yes for sure. Nowadays, exploration companies that look for gold simply drill down and take samples of the surface below. They can easily tell if gold is likely to be present in the area.
The Superstition Mountains are a large lava cap called basalt. The Sierras in the California gold country are also covered in basalt. Rich deposits of gold are never found in basalt. There are places in CA where the lava cap was thin and has eroded away exposing rich gold deposits in the metamorphic rocks under the lava. I believe that's similar to the geology of the Lost Dutchman. I think it lies in a small area not covered in basalt. Because the area around the deposit is covered in basalt for several miles, any other gold deposits in that area are under the basalt and inaccessible. That's why there's no other gold to find there.
@@LuckyBaldwin777 like I said, technology would have found it by now. You really don’t think people go out with a pick axe out there anymore and start fiddling around?
@nightstalker824 At the trailheads the BLM has rangers that stop people and prevent them from taking any sort of mining equipment into the Superstitions, since it's now a wilderness area and mining is not allowed.
After watching this astounding doc, I decided I'm going to leave my family and spend the rest of my life looking for the gold. After I stop at the nearest McDonalds, of course.
Seems crazy, I know. Just remember, Dick Holmes saw 50 lbs of that gold ore and knew there was a giant vein of it in the mountains. And he had the directions.
01:00 Isn’t it wild how a single tale of hidden gold can drive men to murder and a lifetime of obsession? The Dutchman’s secret didn’t just die with him - it sparked a frenzy that lives on to this day! Just how much will people risk to find that mine?

What an amazing story! I hope Clay finds his gold 😊💰💰💰
So many commercials !
I believe either floods or seismic activity had obscured the entrance to this mine. Just my opinion
The government won’t let him have it so why find it
This is not new. It is just a repost of a video that has been around for ages.
Are you new on TH-cam 😂
Wouldn't it be more accurate to say it's the "Dutchman's Lost Mine" instead of the "Lost Dutchman's Mine"? Because, the Dutchman wasn't lost, the mine was
That's too logical for all the sensationalism I think
Yup. Someone wasn't paying attention in 4th grade English.
No, because the name of the mine is Dutchman's mine.
👍
I'm from Phoenix, born and raised 100 yards from the Dutchmans grave ... I've never heard half of this ... I know half of it is made up
