i miss pop music that wasn't afraid to have a sound build. anymore i feel like i hear everything a song is gonna show me in the first 15 seconds. i like that this isn't afraid to take its time getting to the big hits.
He also has an incredible brightness to his voice that the sound engineers (in my opinion) overly darkened in recordings. And unusual choices in vowels, but they work. Love his voice.
@@sarahrogevich4502 His voice certainly is different than most with some great skills, like in 'Run Away' with Shelby Lynn, but I feel that the sound engineers probably had to darken it a bit because I feel he has a limited vocal range. If you listen to 'Overcome' and their cover of 'I Walk The Line' you can hear where his limits are. Lightning Crashes is in the key of E but with the guitars tuned to Eb for a warmer sound so it's already a lower key than most will sing in. They probably had to darken or warm his voice to match the rest of the songs and balance it out a bit. That way it would give him a bit more of a dynamic range allowing his power to come out rather than sounding too bright and possibly harsh. Yeah, the choice in vowels is definitely different but suits the flow of the song. Sometimes it's just better that way. And Yeah, I love his voice as well. It can make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up and I love it when a singer can do that.
Great performance! And even better, not a single person in that crowd holding up a damn phone to record it. Back when people actually listened and paid attention to the band on stage. What happened to those days? sigh........
That’s a consequence of the microphone levels. Engineers spend a ton of time dialing the lead singer’s mic in and the stand mics get less attention since they aren’t getting moved and have fewer opportunities to feedback. I’m sure the audience could hear Adam once his level was bumped but the sound going to tape probably stayed roughly similar, hence his voice getting a bit buried.
@@manifestgtr Thanks for that interesting explanation. I still think Ed's voice is better than Adam's just in general, but I do appreciate your input. 👍🏼
Cool with the nod to Dire Straits!! I'm catching up to you after my long hiatus from performing.......Pachyderm in the woods of Minnesota was one place we looked @ recording just after you and Cobain's "Beavis and Buthead Experience" happened...The house and indoor pool looked great....and a stones throw away was the studio down the hill...cool too...but we ended up @ Oarfin Records with James Walsh producing....still was cool to have touched the same earth you guys did! Rock On!!
What a fantastic song! I get shivers down my spine each time i listen to it, it is simply amazing. The angel closes her eyes, and it hits your emotion with a huge impact.
This is the song that will be heared on my funeral. Fantastic song, now I am completly suprised that the singer of my all-time-favourite band COUNTING CROWS is singing this with Ed. It can't be any better. And Adam: the rest of the songs on this day will be yours.
haha. just found the video. i´ve been there in 2000 or 1999 and when it began to rain cats and dogs the atmosphere started to get better and better. great concert :)
God, I'm so old. I was like - Oh, 2000. That wasn't too long ago. HAHA! The "confusion" sets in at 1:30, when he forgets the words......but nice recovery, great song! This song is just THE BEST
@denise69691 I appreciate your love for the song, but this didn't come out until about 1993. Their first album "Mental Jewelry" was released in late 1991 or 1992.
Thanks for the 'LOAD'__While I can't refer to LIVE as my favorite band, that due to the fact I am a bit simpler in my ways I suppose in that I have three degrees to which I label a band or individual, those being: I Really Like It, I Like It, or It Doesn't Do Anything For Me. LIVE rates in the Really Like category for me. That means that they have to have more than one or two songs that really do something for me. Definitely a great band from any era and at the very top short list for the 90's!
I got to see them on this tour when they were in New York. I don't think Adam Duritz sang on this song though. What a great concert though... Counting Crows, Live, and Collective Soul.
@wepo59 Your English is better than most here in the US! I think perhaps the difference is that I usually go see smaller shows now. I have been thinking since I saw your comment to me & I think that is the basic difference. Most of my groups don't have the computer programs you are talking about. They still have people along with the equipment. :) Music is the important thing! It doesn't matter how it is done. Music keeps us all together! Thanks for taking the time to answer me, Moppet
one of the greatest songs ever from this era... up there with songs like Bitter Sweet Symphony
i miss pop music that wasn't afraid to have a sound build. anymore i feel like i hear everything a song is gonna show me in the first 15 seconds. i like that this isn't afraid to take its time getting to the big hits.

The drums are definitely the driving force behind this song.
Drummer is on point
he's the lead singer for Counting Crows, cool to see them collaborating together, although it would have been nice to hear a little more out of him
the angel opens her eyes, pale blue coloured eyes present the surface... who wrote these lyrics??? a hidden genius!!!
Ed did. Just saw a great interview on a channel called iwalktheline00. Loved counting crows lyrics too. Was so up for your own interpretation. 💜

Pretty sure it's presents the circle, given that the song is basically about the circle of birth and death.

Anyone notice the nod to Dire Straits at 1:04?
+Jason Rawlings No, but why worry 'bout it.

+Nicholas Liyanage Listen to the 6th minute or so of "Why Worry" by DS...that scale repeats while Mark plays over it like only he can!
