Now you've done the Breeders, you have to get round to the Pixies! Kim Deal was in both - 'Gigantic' is a good track featuring her vocals, but really one can't go wrong with anything from Surfer Rosa or Doolittle ('Where Is My Mind?', 'Debaser', 'Monkey Gone to Heaven', etc).
You just put exactly what I was going to write. Also Brad needs to get his brother round for some of the Pixies tracks like Oh My Golly, Vamos etc, he can translate the Spanish for them. But starting with Gigantic which is in English would be nice.
Guys, this is Kim from The Pixies, she formed this group with members of other bands...unfortunately, she was happy with her own projects and hasn't returned with the Pixies since the Death to The Pixies tour
Kurt Cobain's favorite band was the Meat Puppets I'm not saying that he didn't like the Pixies, I met Kurt Cobain in Tempe Arizona and he was hanging out with the Meat Puppets he was saying this was his favorite band of all time and if you watch the MTV unplugged with Nirvana he plays the songs from the Meat Puppets.. this is the band that he wanted to be, plus the singer of the Meat Puppets was onstage playing the guitar during MTV unplugged.
PIXIES NEXT. Kim Deal was a bass player and a singer in the Pixies. Pixies influenced ALL OF GRUNGE AND WAS BEFORE GRUNGE. Nirvana thanked them because Nirvana wouldn't exist without them.
Chur chur I've seen these guys three times over the years here in Aotearoa new zealand love the BREEDER'S AND THE PIXIES Who I've been lucky enough to have seen twice
The "Last Splash" album is great. Kim Deal (vocals, guitars) used to play bass in the PIXIES and her voice added so much to the sound of that band. Listen to "Driving on 9" if you want to hear more of her voice. It's a beautiful song off the same Breeders album.
The Breeders rock! See Pixies next, they are tied to The Pixies. Cobain loved Pixies. They were all over TV and the radio during the '90s and '00s. Also see Luscious Jackson, Hole, No Doubt, L7, Garbage, Sonic Youth, The Cranberries, The Pretenders, etc. Female members Alternative, grunge and punk bands were great during the '80s - '00s.
Sisters, Kim and Kelly Deal's second band after The Pixies. These girls are also jazz musicians so, unlike the Pixies, they employ their jazz skills. There's many variations of Punk, ie. Ethnic, Jazz, Funk and so on.
I've never been able to put my finger on why I like this song so much, but it grabbed me from the very first time I heard it! It's undeniably catchy and a total earworm!

For me, it's… you cannot really describe it. It's not following any of the usual structures. Like… Pulp Fiction. Or Bohemian Rhapsody. Mixing shit so you can't really say what it is. It defies description. Oh, and it has lots of that "quiet loud" that the Pixies were/are famous for (that Kurt Cobain wanted to/did copy in Smells Like Teen Spirit).
This song was big in the grunge hayday. There were a lot of fun girl bands in the 90's grunge/alternative scene. The Murmurs-You suck was always one of my favorites.
Kim Deal said in a 1993 interview, that she was talking to her sister Kelley Deal who was reading a biography of the Marquis de Sade at the time, and Kim was making fun of him, saying "Oh, you little libertine, you're a real cuckoo, do you want to go to hell? C'mon let's go to hell.. Don't just jump in... do a cannonball. And you know what? I'm gonna be right behind you, I'll be the last f**king splash." An interesting facts: The demo title was Grunggae (Grunge/Reggae), because Kim thought that the accented riff sounded reggae, hence the lyric, "I'll be your 'whatever you want', The bong in this reggae song."
If you liked her voice check out The Pixies - Gigantic. It’s an amazing song. She wasn’t the main singer in The Pixies but the songs she sung were amazing. She plays bass in both bands. Can’t recommend Gigantic enough, it’s an instant classic.
It's a lot like the Sonic Youth song 'Kool Thing' which has that same theme -- here you are, you're a cool Gen X'er, but are you all for show? The answer in both is "yes".
Loving the exchange of culture here, warms and softens my heart. I grew up with funk, soul, very very early rap, motown .... as a minority and I loved every minute of it. Loving the smiles and the appreciation. Music is one of the most powerful things ever.
I always loved this song because it challenges how songs are supposed to be put together. They have a number of beautiful mellodies in it, and they transition from one to another in odd ways, and at odd times. LOVE IT!
Now we are getting into some real alternative bands!!! HALLEJUH!!!! Next - THE SMITHS, SUEDE, early PRETENDERS, NEW ORDER, ECHO and the BUNNYMENT,. Black Rebel Motorcycle, Stone Roses, and many more....
Got to understand this song in the context of 90's grunge. The trashy guitars, the loud quiet loud thing the Pxies really made legendary...all girl band, Kim Deal front woman, all revolutionary at the time. And as everybody else said, you MUST delve into the warped, slanted dark, yet beautiful universe of the PIXIES now. My favourite "Monkey gone to Heaven", but also "Where is my mind" and "Velouria"...Can't do grunge without them.
First time I heard this song was with a buddy of mine. We were both 18 and stoned. The beginning of the song we both thought we were trippin with all the crazy sounds blending together, and we just started laughing. We played this song over and over!!
Before The Breeders, vocalist Kim Deal was in Pixies. She only sang a couple of songs with them, the best of which is Gigantic. Breeders also includes Kim Deals twin sister Kelly.
I want you to watch the actual video. Also like the other posters say, you need to listen to some more Pixies...as that is kinda where they came from. One of the most influential bands in alternative rock.
I saw them play at Lollapalooza ‘94-this was really awesome live! As others have said, this was a side project for Kim Deal, bassist for the Pixies, (along with her twin sister Kelly) while that band was on hiatus. (you definitely have to check them out; major popular alt rock band.)
I saw them at Lollapalooza '94 as well in San Diego. I don't think they finished one song. It was a hot day and the staff hosed down the front row with water. That created some mud. They got upset when mud was thrown at them by someone in the front row. They stopped the song and yelled at the crowd to stop throwing mud at them. Of course someone threw some more mud and they just walked off.
MTV played the crap out of this video. It's one of those songs that the guitar part gets stuck in your head. I saw it as grunge . It was ok to dance to.
The look of plaid clothing and skater shoes is not hipster - this was more punk in the day from the early 80s through the 90's. It's hipsters that adopted the look.
Didn't recognize this song by name, but I certainly did when that base came in. This is the epitome of "90s." Never had any idea what the lyrics to this were, I never even thought about them before - almost like they didn't exist. Having them on screen and being forced to acknowledge them was a little surreal. Edit: Lex's got this one.
Oh the feels this song!! I swear this was on a triple j hottest 100 compilation. If u know, u know. Late 90s sitting on my mates balcony west coast of Australia smoken billies and the rest…. Oh yes feels fr fr. Big up from down under whom ever may read this comment
I've loved the overall song, since it was released, but I've also always thought that the instrumentals were a bunch of offhand riffs they didn't know what to do with so they just stuffed them all into a track and make up some random lyrics and voila! instant song with a great hook!
OMG The Beeders were really good! Kim and Kelley Deal (twins) did this as a side project with Josephine Wiggs and Jim Macpherson while they (Kim) were working with The Pixies (Kim) and Throwing Muses (Kelley) respectively. I saw Throwing Muses last public performance.
Thank you, I didn't feel like typing all this myself.
I’ve been requesting pixies for awhile I hope they do number 13 baby n gouge away
You just put exactly what I was going to write. Also Brad needs to get his brother round for some of the Pixies tracks like Oh My Golly, Vamos etc, he can translate the Spanish for them. But starting with Gigantic which is in English would be nice.
Wave of Mutilation
Here Comes Your Man!
this song is SO 90s. quirky. grungy guitar. random drum rolls and pauses. delicious girly vocals. a driving beat. it rocks, I love it.
Jim MacPherson’s drum work on this track is underrated.
Just like am A330.
Guys, this is Kim from The Pixies, she formed this group with members of other bands...unfortunately, she was happy with her own projects and hasn't returned with the Pixies since the Death to The Pixies tour
omg - flashbacks to watching MTV in the afternoons after college classes in the early 90s. This was a pretty fun video.
It's a groovy flow in this song and it's so hypnotics so you can't help yourself to just love this song! Awesome!!!
Kim Deal is the definition of "Hip." She is criminally underrated. Lest we forget Kurt Cobain's favorite band was the Pixies.
AGREED
Kurt Cobain's favorite band was the Meat Puppets I'm not saying that he didn't like the Pixies, I met Kurt Cobain in Tempe Arizona and he was hanging out with the Meat Puppets he was saying this was his favorite band of all time and if you watch the MTV unplugged with Nirvana he plays the songs from the Meat Puppets.. this is the band that he wanted to be, plus the singer of the Meat Puppets was onstage playing the guitar during MTV unplugged.

Female band named 'Breeders'. They are proto punk - "right up to your face and diss you!"
Between the two of them, the Deal Twins are in all the bands. All of them.
PIXIES NEXT. Kim Deal was a bass player and a singer in the Pixies. Pixies influenced ALL OF GRUNGE AND WAS BEFORE GRUNGE. Nirvana thanked them because Nirvana wouldn't exist without them.
I adore The Breeders.
Kim and Kelly Deal are twin sisters.
Kim was in the ultra-cool alt band called the Pixies.
Yeah! I first saw her in thje pixies cause they were the opening band for a U2 concert I went to! Loved them so much I got a few albums the next day!
1989 ticket stub holder from Glasgow barrowlands. The best concert I have been to in my whole life.
*Kelley
@@nathanclarke2777 Gosh, The Pixies and then U2. What a gig.
@@Alpha_7227 It was amazing! Also I was 3rd row center!
Hipsters existed loooooong before the 1990s.

This song is so high school. Miss the 90's.
Y'all are correct. I loved the Breeders, I wore baggy jeans and stepped on the back of them, and I still smoke a lot of cigs.
I was fortunate enough to see the Breeders open for Nirvana in 1993 on the In Utero tour. 🤘🏼🙌🏼
me too
Just saw them open for the foo fighters , amazing.
Its like Grunge had a Punk flashback.
The "Last Splash" album is great. Kim Deal (vocals, guitars) used to play bass in the PIXIES and her voice added so much to the sound of that band. Listen to "Driving on 9" if you want to hear more of her voice. It's a beautiful song off the same Breeders album.
Agree on Driving on 9. Breeders do country.
Yes, "Driving on 9" - what a wonderful little nugget that is. Love that track.
Driving on 9 !!
One of the best 90s albums
"Feed the Tree" by Belly. "Sweetness & Light" by Lush. "Not Too Soon" by Throwing Muses.
Lot of us cool misfits kids were listening to bands like this jaja
Used to get stoned to this tune in the 90s 😆
Loved how confused Brad looked. Definitely can tell this is the 90's.
'90s/alternative rock band. Part of Pixies. Nirvana loved these groups. I used to crush on the girls.
Breeders FUCK ING ROCKED
Greatest dis track ever. (And not the only one on the album...about the same guy...)
The soundtrack to the summer of 1994 was this and Loser by Beck. Quickly followed by Green Day and the Offspring.
I remember this song was played on the radio like 3 or 5 times a day when it came out new in 1994
You two would LOVE Veruca Salt's "I'm Taking Europe With Me".
Another 90s classic
song is a sarcastic swipe at her former bandmate of the Pixies who thought he was god and gave Kim very little credit
One Of My Fave Songs!🙆🥰🎶💃🤗

These sisters 👏 90's bruh , but you get the benefit of lyrics on first listen. The video cool , the seether
Yes. Got to do Pixes. They paved the way for many. My favorite.
the bass and drums are what are meant to stand out here
I fell in love with Kim Deal seeing her sing and play bass live with Pixies. There is just something about that chick.
Yes. There is no stage presence in existence quite like that of Kim and her beatific smile.
@@NxDoyle Kim Gordon. But, yeah

the song is just sonically fun!
This is one of the original "alternative" bands. They started out in Dayton Ohio..

90s music was dirty. Just plain do whatever the hell you want.
Absolute 90's Classic, this song was huge at the time. L7, Sleater-Kinney, Hole, PJ Harvey, the list goes on for amazing 90's female artists.

Juliana Hatfield is probably my favorite 90s alt girl, usually overlooked for some reason.

All come from the same “individual” thinking collective groups of people. Real “rebels”.
Hipsters who pride themselves on being first in almost everything are basically a bad pastiche of trends from the very recent past.
I love it when they get their subcultures all confused like goths and emos.
I think plaid is more Ska than punk or grunge so is a tie and zany sunglasses all ska
