  • Welcome to LPC's LoonCam 1, a captivating live stream from the heart of New Hampshire's lakes region. This unique channel offers a window into the life of a loon pair, capturing the raw beauty and unpredictable drama of nature throughout their breeding cycle. While nature's pace may seem slow at times, the unfolding story can quickly become gripping.
In the 2023 season, territorial disputes led to the nest being left unused, a first in many years. This season, a pair has been visiting the area regularly with only a few instances of additional loons. We remain hopeful to witness the nesting process, which in the past has begun as early as May 24th and as late as June 10th. In the interim, enjoy the serene backdrop of New Hampshire's lake sounds, punctuated by occasional visits from our loon pair.
On May 17'th, after several visits by a pair of geese, we decided to put netting over the nest for a few days. Geese are incubating eggs on at least two other artificial loon nests in NH. The netting was removed on May 19'th, minutes after the loons first showed interested in the nest. On May 22, the loons visited the open nest and came back a few hours later. One sat in the nest for about 10 minutes. These are good signs.
Our broadcast in crisp 1080p HD, along with a rewind feature that lets you catch up on the last 12 hours, ensures you don't miss a moment. Engage with our community in the live chat, where you can find timestamps of key events, ask questions during our biologists' Q&A sessions, and share your observations. We encourage respectful, informative, and family-friendly discussions. Please subscribe to the LPC channel to post in the chat room and receive alerts for video highlights.
The loons you're watching, banded in 2013, have been companions each season since. Identifiable by their unique band colors-white over orange and silver over blue for the male, and orange over silver for the female (one leg only)-these ancient birds symbolize resilience and continuity in the natural world.
At LPC, our mission extends beyond this stream. We are dedicated to restoring and maintaining New Hampshire's loon populations, monitoring their health and productivity, and fostering a greater appreciation for wildlife. We invite you to support this cause by joining as a member or donating through our website, where new members in May could win great prizes. See loon.org for details.
This stream includes natural audio from a microphone in the nest, allowing you to overhear the loons' interactions and the nocturnal peace of the lake-though we may adjust the volume for privacy. We also urge viewers who recognize the nesting site to respect the privacy of both the local community and the loons by keeping the location confidential.
Tune in, become part of this live conservation effort, and witness the fascinating lifecycle of loons against the picturesque backdrop of New Hampshire's lakes. Don't forget, if you miss a significant event, you can find archived clips on our TH-cam channel, ensuring you stay connected to this remarkable natural saga.
