  • Welcome to the Lake Fairlee LoonCam!
    UPDATE 7/26/2024: Long Hot Summer!
With the new chick and the departure from the nest, the Vermont Center for EcoStudies worked with a small team of volunteers to remove the old raft in preparation to replace it with a new one. We are left with a gorgeous view of Lake Fairlee with lots of opportunity to continue to observe wildlife on the quiet end of the lake. We continue to get occasional glimpses of the loon family along with eagles, osprey, beavers, mergansers, snapping turtles and the wonderful sounds of peepers and bull frogs throughout the night. Enjoy the view through the fall when the colors promise to be spectacular. But let's not rush things!! Slow down and absorb this gift!
    UPDATE 6/30/2024: Hatch!
On June 29 at around 5pm, the first egg hatched revealing a beautiful baby loon. Our faithful loon watcher cadre provided some great timestamps for your viewing enjoyment. The next day we all experienced joy and anxiety about the health of the chick and the fate of the second egg. Today, we have confirmed that the second chick was stillborn. While disappointing that our second chick did not survive, it reminds us of the natural rhythms of the lake and how fortunate we are to watch and learn from our wild environment. The loon family vacated the nest this afternoon to move on to a nursery area nearby. We will continue to observe and monitor their health and look forward to welcoming them again next year. Thank you again to all of you for your engagement, encouragement, and vigilant observations of loon behavior, of which we still have much to learn. Hopefully, this loon cam can continue to contribute to our understanding of these wonderful beings.
    UPDATE 06/11/2024: EGGS!
On Sunday, June 2, our loon pair laid their first egg and there was much rejoicing! Three days later, on Wednesday, June 5 they laid a second egg. We've had several close encounters with snapping turtles and beavers. So far, the eggs seem to be doing well and we are cautiously optimistic that as we approach the 4th of July weekend, we may have a couple of loon chicks to celebrate! Clips of the eggs being laid as well as the close encounters are available in the 2024 playlist so be sure to check those out. A big thank you to our loyal, global loon chat crew for all the timestamps, observations, enthusiasm and excitement as we enjoy a wonderful 2024 season.
Lake Fairlee hosted its first loon breeding pair in 2016 when they successfully hatched a chick at a shoreline nest near the mouth of Blood Brook. The next year they returned but their initial effort was thwarted by a raccoon. The Vermont Loon Conservation Project immediately stepped in and furnished a loon nesting raft where the pair successfully re-nested and hatched another chick. Since then the loons have returned every spring and average one chick a year using the same nesting raft maintained by local volunteers. The Lake Fairlee community has embraced the loons, enchanted by their haunting calls and touched by the care they show their offspring. In recognition of this, the Lake Fairlee Association is pleased to sponsor the first loon observation camera in Vermont.
The stream is broadcast in 1080p HD and you can adjust the resolution to improve picture quality. Use rewind to view up to 12 hours past, and check the chat room for timestamp updates on the loon pair. Subscribe to the channel for chat access and video highlights from the nest. The chat feature of the live stream allows visitors to comment on what they are seeing and discuss the activity of the loons. If you notice interesting behavior while watching the live stream, please share a description of the activity and the timestamp of the observation so we can capture a highlight for future study. Several snippets of interesting loon activity have been captured and stored in the following playlist: • Lake Fairlee LoonCam Feel free to browse the playlist for these short videos.
The Lake Fairlee Association's mission is to preserve, protect, and enhance the distinctive ecology and natural resources of Lake Fairlee and its watershed. @Lake Fairlee Association This is Gail Harless. I'm writing to inquire about the loon cam that @Sean Brown and @Doug Tifft manage. It is suddenly gone with no prior warning.

Love that cam ! I watch from California each morning because it reminds me of where I grew up in Connecticut as a kid. The sounds and moods of the lake are so peaceful. Hope it comes back on line soon. Thanks so much for your efforts
