I have a 98 GS with 144,000 miles. I got it with 130,000. I have put Mustang wheels on it, dual straight pipes, and 5% window tint, and it is one of the best cars, and probably my favorite of all the cars and trucks I've owned over my 52 years of living.
On my 3rd GM and just bought a 97 in rough shape for 300 bucks. I love the simplicity of working on these cars. I'm excited to bring it back to a beautiful condition, with some work it will be a clean car again
I am a recently retired municipal fleet mechanic for 41 years. I worked on thousands of Ford Crown Vics during that time, all the way back to the boxy ones. I preferred the Grand Marquis because it was more comfortable, and has that 2.73 rear axle that lets you cruise at 65 mph just above idle. I've been driving them for over 30 years. They last forever. I got two of them past 400,000 miles. I just bought my third one, a 2007 LS, about the same silver color as that one, with 36,000 miles on it. Being 64, I don't expect to ever need another car. I'm 6'2" 240, and just don't fit in those little tiny front wheel drive cars, and I hate front wheel drive cars anyway. The prices are going up on all the Panther cars, from the rattiest P71 to showroom condition Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Cars. There used to be millions of them, but there are very few decent ones left. People bought them cheap and trashed them. They are not cheap any more, but a nice one is still a better deal than a new tiny front wheel drive car. I paid $9,000 for my 2007, in near showroom condition. My ex wife paid $35,000 for a new 2022 Hyundai Accent that I can't even get into. My Grand Marquis almost certainly has more miles left in it than that Hyundai, and it is 10 times more comfortable.
My 2005 was white. But not for long. Not long after I got it the white paint started peeling off. Before long it was half white and half gray. I just drove it that way, there was no way to repaint it without removing ALL the defective white paint. I still managed to put over 400,000 miles on it.
Great 👍 review ! I owned a 86 Chevrolet Caprice Classic well over 15years and after the Chevrolet I bought a 1999 Mercury Grand Marquis both the Chevrolet and Mercury gave me many years of reliable service and they were very comfortable .
The '77-'90 Caprice was as bulletproof as the Panther cars, and I liked the boxy styling. Unfortunately there seem to be no decent condition ones left. I was 18 the year they came out.
The main problem with the pre 2003 is the steering linkage. It's the old school recirculating ball type, with a center link, idler arm, pitman arm, and two tie rods with 4 tie rod ends. It typically wears enough after about 150,000 miles to where it feels loose and sloppy. It can cost $2000 to have all the wear parts replaced and aligned. The 2003 and up have rack and pinion steering that can last past 400,000 miles. The positive thing about the earlier models is they tend to have a more "floaty" ride, if that's what you're looking for.
What a find, very clean! I was looking for a 95-97 Merc or Town Car, which in my opinion are the best looking years for those cars. Whichever I found first is the one I would buy. I ended up finding and buying a 97 TC first, but I'm still looking for a Merc. Great cars.
The 2003 and up models have some major improvements. A whole new front suspension that is built like a tank, rack and pinion steering, 4 wheel disc brakes, and several other minor things.
Love these. Great video with great info. Didn’t know that about the radio. I’m looking to get a crown Vic as my next car but a late model 09-11 hope they don’t have that same radio rear speaker issue.
@@driversreview Yes, they do. But you can get installation kits for some aftermarket stereos that solves the speaker issue. But there is still the problem of getting an aftermarket stereo to fit in the dash. It's an odd size. It looks like a double DIN, but is just a bit bigger. You can cut up the dash, but you are not likely to ever find another good bezel to put it back to stock if that matters. From 2003-2011 the radios are interchangeable. The stereo in my 2006 had both a CD and cassette player. My 2007 only had the CD. I swapped them. I used the cassette player with an adaptor to connect my MP3 player to. I think the factory stereo has great sound, and doesn't look like something that belongs in a spaceship.
I've got a 2009 Ford CVPI as my daily driver, and I absolutely love it to death! Makes a nice engine growl when you hit the gas, the ride is really smooth, and parts (in theory) are VERY cheap and easy to replace since they made so many of them! Wouldn't mind one of these Grand Marquis either, I just prefer the looks of the Crown Vic.
Just bought a green 95 marquis in nice shape with 102,000 on it for 1450. Can't wait to go pick it up! I've owned an 01 p71 and a 96 crown Vic lx and always regretted selling them!
I have owned 3 MGM's, 03' limited edition, 04' Signature Series and a 96' BAYSHORE EDITION. I will never buy any other car. Bulletproof 4.6 will run forever and run strong as long as you take care of it.
Did you update the manifold? We had a 97 crown Vic with the plastic manifold and it cracked on us. Make sure it’s been done, if not I’d suggest it. Other than that they are pretty much bulletproof.
If you think your next car should have a plastic intake manifold resting on a hot engine... "hey that's a good idea!". Then I can pay obscene money Ford charges when the manifold cracks! $1200? No problem... hey it's ford, it's pleasure. And I really love a car with steering so loose and vague that it wanders all over the road. And I especially love the shitty fuel economy while gas is so expensive. Yup the 97 Grand Marquis... that's the car for me.
Excellent video!! I am a grandpa who owns a third generation 2005 Grand Marquis LSE . It's got almost every option, including a moonroof, front bucket seats with center console and shifter. Custom ordered new from the factory and built in Canada on April 6,2005. Has the true dual exhaust version of the 4.6 liter modular V8. Producing 239hp at 287 pound feet of torque. Mine has 126,000 miles and still runs like a top. Your car is absolutely gorgeous. I'm a first Gulf War Vet. I've owned many vehicles, including five other Ford Panther cars. My first was a blue 1985 Grand Marquis LS. I have to say, these are the best cars, I've ever owned!! They all had their share of minor problems. All cars do. But, generally they never left me stranded. Extremely reliable!
I have a 97, I bought it for 2k 8 years ago. The last owner did the manifold and had the lighting control module rebuilt, he kept up with the maintenance. I changed the blend door motor, everything else I did was wear and tear stuff. I spend about $400-$600 a year on wear and tear parts at most. The car is very easy to work on and parts are cheap and easy to get. 28MPG on the highway and 16MPG in the city with the 2.73 gears. The steering is tight and very light. I put kyb shocks on it to improve handling and added dual exhaust. I bet it lasts me another 8 years. That is $725 dollars a year assuming I spend $600 a year on wipers filters oil and other wear and tear items when the 16 years are up including purchase price. I have rear wheel drive v8 torque and can carry 6 people in comfort and still have a massive trunk.

For the radio you don't have to rewire all the speakers. I just bought an adapter that went from the back amp to the front and it worked great. 🎶

I've had the famous 95 MERC for 17 years -- EXCELLENT performance and fuel mileage, even after 178,000+ miles.
And theyre fewer and far between on the road

When they were new, they were popular among Middle-aged people perhaps they were salespeople or spent alot of time on the highway
