    Love that Emma brought up the financial aspect of being an actor a few times in this roundtable. In addition to highlighting the importance of women having their own income, she also explained the reality of actors having to choose less "prestige"-y roles because they need to get paid, in a way that was funny and which removed stigma from the situation. It's easy sometimes with these interviews for the actors to get caught up in talking about how they do it all for the love of the art, which is often true, but the financial aspect of the film industry definitely needs to be discussed openly too.

      I think of all the women at the round table, she was being the most pragmatic. I don’t know if that’s a reflection of her age (she’s the oldest one there) or her personality or if it’s because she’s not Oscar-nominated this year. I feel like Yeoh, Blanchett and de Armas were being very careful and guarded with their answers. Plus, I’ve read interviews of Thompson where she said she’s the primary breadwinner in her family.

    Every actress here but Emma has made certain they are posed in front of an aesthetically-pleasing background for the Zoom session. Tasteful pictures of flowers behind them, etc. Emma (God love her) is sitting in her crowded, wonderfully-used North London kitchen, pots and pans and pepper shakers scattered behind her. She is real, like the Velveteen Rabbit. A gift to us all.

    Emma is 100% correct. Any actor I have ever heard say intimacy coordinators are not needed are men. Every single one. How telling that is, actually, and to me how it proves that they are very much needed when the confidence and control in a nude or sex scene is obviously so one sided.

    Emma is lovely & generous. All of these women are so diverse & beautiful as it should be. Ms. Deadwyler professed the need to connect with your spirituality , & there by the grace of God you go. The Oscar is truly the pagan symbol for worth & illusion & it has dismissed excellence by minorities. It's part of the system...the beast that wants you to be wretched. Danielle's performance was helped by Mamie the community and God's sublime grace.

    I love how Emma Thompson really just keeps it real. Sometimes actors do act for the money - it is their profession, their bread and butter after all. And it's sad that women who do not meet the certain "standards" as pushed onto us by society will not be able to "do it for the art" or choose the roles they want.

    Oooof it so hard for people to keep saying it’s brave for Emma to do that. That’s insulting to every woman. We are not models. She’s keeping it real. Not selling a dream or starving herself or having work done to look palatable on screen. Calling her brave suggests that it’s something to be feared or embarrassed by. I hope a lot of women smiled and felt seen and represented. ❤

      @thexxit ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I understand your comment completely. I think sadly it's a commentary on the world today that we think someone without a "perfect" body showing themselves nude is brave. It's a reflection on our society and how little we've come.

    • @kokopellicrazy
      @kokopellicrazy ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I don't know how common it is in the UK, but for American and Chinese actresses, it's really rare for any of them (at any age) to do full frontal scenes. So maybe that's what Michelle Yeoh meant? I know it's nearly unheard of in Chinese cinema. Tang Wei did full frontal scenes in "Lust Caution" and she got blacklisted in China for years.

    • @vedanthmisri9956
      @vedanthmisri9956 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I understand where you are coming from, but it's still hard for actors (both men and women) - people themseleves to showcase their vulnerability the way Emma did. And especially when it is looked down upon and mocked in Asian/South Asian countries. It is hard.

    BAFTA got it right for best actress. Thank you for recognizing these beautiful lovely talented diverse women. This is how it should be. Now this category should not have a winner bc they all were brilliant. And I'm cynical so to see inclusion based on excellence makes me smile. America right now is divided and the Oscar snubs for Danielle and Viola felt deliberate & just foul. Probably bc their performances were too unforgettable to be ignored and were "Oscar calibre". They suck.

    People rooting for Michelle Yeoh should do that only if they feel hers was the best performance this year, not just coz she is from an Asian origin. I believe EEAAO is gonna win Best Picture and a lot of other awards. It doesn't mean it has to win in every single category. Michelle Yeoh would be more than happy with all the love (and awards) her movie is receiving. Stop unnecessarily driving the 'Asian/non-white' narrative to support her. There is something stunningly wonderful with Michelle Yeoh’s performance in this film “Everything Everywhere All at Once” that has live in my memory as fresh as the day this brilliant film has been shown on theatre. How she exquisitely observed these different characters with such grace and precision. I’m at a loss of words to accurately describe her distinctive style of cinematic achievement. It might be just me, but I’m quite skeptical of Cate Blanchett’s movie “TAR”. I thought it was a heady mixture of boredom and mediocrity. My instincts had me avoiding it. However, I thought Cate Blanchett was so convincing as a renowned conductor/musician Lydia Tar. But since Cate already have received many recognitions (Oscars) in the past, I have got to hand the best lead actress to Michelle Yeoh’s one of a kind performance. My observation of her character in the movie seems exceptionally tour de force!…I know how presumptuous of me to say but my personal opinion has no place in this and it would not convince some voters to consider and acknowledge her work as the best performance this year. But I’m hoping for the best outcome that she would receive her very first BAFTA, SAG and Academy Awards trophies.

      I would not waste my time + money because Tar seems to be a vicious individual.
      I feel bad that Tar received vastly more interest than "Women Talking". As you may know, the latter
      film is based on true events, in a white isolated religious community, in Bolivia, where girls + women
      were drugged + sexually assaulted during the nite, from 2005 - 2009.
