      +edals90 not due to the number of lights working, but the lights must illuminate at a constant rate.
      I would say this means no flashing during emergency(blinkers flash instead) or go dim and bright
      To me this law is a bit stupid, flashing brake lights make more sense when doing an emergency stop than flashing blinkers which flash by design

    • @IIGrayfoxII
      @IIGrayfoxII 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +edals90 Yes you must have working brake lights, but the brake lights themselves must burn at a set rate.

      +IIGrayfoxII You must have forgotten about blind people. They rely on sound to distinguish where a car is. If the car doesnt have sound, they have no idea the car is there. This has been becoming a common thing in electric vehicles given those situations.

    • @Fists91
      @Fists91 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +derekjm1 Even people that can see rely heavily on sound to keep track of their surroundings, given the option they should never step onto a main road without looking but in shared areas you can't expect them to be constantly looking behind them to see if some ninja car is creeping on them.

    I saw my first i8 on the road besides seeing on a showroom floor. It's possibly one of most beautiful pieces of engineering on the roads today.
    The likes of Tesla, BMW and Nissan will more than likely entice other manufacturers to introduce their own line of more appealing hybrids, with more of a reliance on the electric motors, or electric-only vehicles.
    My only gripe is the cost. At this moment majority of hybrids and full electric cars start around €25k. In the near future it would be nice to see affordable, practical motors in and around the €10,000 price tag that's not a second hand Prius.

  • @scottkuzma125

    Is this guy serious?
    #9 at 2:55
    "Having the electric motor upfront means that under deceleration, as load transfers to the front axle, more energy can be recovered versus a rear wheel drive system."
    Did he come up with this theory on his own? Or did some marketing genius from BMW tell him this?
    The only difference here would be the packaging of the motors in combination with the engine in the back with the smaller electric motor. Regenerative braking capability would be identical from one axle to the other. Plus they get the say that the car is all-wheel-drive, which sounds better than only being two-wheel-drive.
    #9 should have simply been stating the fact that with the electric motor at the front axle and the internal combustion engine at the rear axle, it allows the car to be rear-wheel-drive, front-wheel-drive, or all-wheel-drive.

    • @britindrelie8789
      @britindrelie8789 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably depends on how aggressive the regenerative braking is. Load transfer means that more braking can always be done with the front wheels than the rear, so if the regenerative braking force applied up front exceeds the braking capabilities of the rear wheels, then what he said is true.

    • @scottkuzma125
      @scottkuzma125 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That theory would hold true if braking forces were allowed to go high enough to lose traction of the rear wheels. A Chevy Volt or Cadillac ELR with their 16.5kWh capacity battery can accept regenerative braking up to a maximum of 60kWh. A larger battery can handle a larger surge of energy coming into it, but even a Tesla Model S which weighs 4,936lbs (P90D & sunroof, etc.) and a 90kWh battery...STILL only has a programmed 60kWh of regenerative energy recovery rate. They have been this way regardless of being AWD or RWD, 60kW/70kW/85kW/90kW battery sizes. The BMW i8 lithium battery is only 7.1kW in total capacity. Highly doubtful that it would hit above 60kW of energy surging into it at such a high C-Rate.
      It has to do with the driving experience of how a driver expects a similar behavior to what they may be familiar with from driving cars, such as manual transmission sports cars, in the past. Regenerative braking exists to provide higher efficiency on a commute, and 60kW is a sweet spot that mimics the feel of a manual gearbox selected in a gear that is one or two gears lower than you would cruise at, which is probably equal to no more than 20% of stopping potential at the very most.
      Keep in mind that BMW's marketing department is who most likely mis-spoke when they mentioned this detail to him. Perhaps something was lost in translation.

    Speaker for outer noise - great solution, i saw that problem with non-electrical cars very often, new (just bought) Hyundai Solaris at low speed have very low and non-structural noise, so you need to get very close to people to let them hear you, or use horn. Same problem was with Mitsubishi LancerX 2.0 L but it is hearable from 2-3 meters, instead of touching someones leg from behind (and he "oh, what's this?" than "POKE what are you doing here, sorry, go on please").

    Cool video,thanks. It's always refreshing to get more gee wiz info on a car, especially one I'll never drive. Drag coefficient of 0.26? Not impressed. Same as a Mazda 6. They could've saved themselves tons of money (and the consuner) by spending less on aerodynamics that don't justify part of the price. The other stuff on the video is just neat. Thanks.

    Do the American's even need a noise to recogniz' a car coming?!
    In Europa it's just an option, but no one orders it.
    Why can a fwd car regain more break energy?
    Yes the car dives in while breaking... But isn't this becouse of the breakbalance between the axles? So if the balance was 40:60 not 60:40 the back axles would regain' more energy right?
    Of course I'm aware that the steering would be that good especially under ABS.

    Very low vibration from an inline 3? Unless it is using a balance shaft you're off the mark. The apparent smoothness would be from the soft engine mounts and sound insulation.
    My EcoBoost 1L 3 cylinder (same basic architecture) is far from smooth at idle. The engine movement at idle is almost comical.

    I was working at a bmw dealership and we had a white i8 in the shop. while walking though the shop everything sensed fine no imminent danger, but about 3 quarters though the massive shop I look back and INCHES behind me was the i8 driving. it made zero noise. i mean zero noise. this sumabitch followed me across the shop starting at the end of the shop inches behind me in this car and I had no clue. I literally screamed when I saw that car behind me. I've driven the i3 many times and at some 3 miles an hour it mostly silent except some tiny transmission noise you hear if it's only a few feet away, but this i8 made no noise at all at that speed, i imagine at some 10mph or so it would make transmission noise. sitting inside the car is incredible though, absolutely love the interior feel

  • @philipkaiser5663

    • @Mortalomena

      +Mike Arredondo That only works in some citys, I think. So no point reviewing a feature thats only available to only 0,1% of the people that is considering buying them.

    I think this is an amazing technologial achievment. Regardless of how it performs in sport situations, I think this definately paves the way for thoes futuristic cars potrayed in movies like "demolition man". I cant wait to see this merged with google's self driving cars

    3 cylinder has no better balance than 4 cylinder. It has perfect primary and secondary balance, but it has big rocking motion, it would vibrate more.
    3 cylinder has better exhaust pulsing and it could be more efficient for turbocharging. And this is not first 3 cylinder BMW, because 2 series MPV uses same engine.
    Fun fact - this engine is exact half of engine from BMW M3.

    • @zoppp621
      @zoppp621 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mladen Milić While it is half the cylinder count, it is not "half" of the m3 engine. BMW is not using the modular "B" platform engine in the m3, the m3 uses the s55 while the i8 uses the b38

    • @z00h
      @z00h 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mladen Milić it would have been first 3 cyl bmw when it launched.

    • @dknollRX7
      @dknollRX7 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's already a bulletin out for the rear motor mounts breaking due to vibration. The engine in the i8 is definitely half of the same engine that's in the M3 though.

    • @zoppp621
      @zoppp621 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      dknollRX7 it is not. Completely different platforms. The i8 uses the modular platform while the m3 uses the old 6 cylinder platform.

    • @dknollRX7
      @dknollRX7 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Akash Hegde I meant to say definitely NOT*. Should have double checked before I hit send. I work at a BMW dealer and I'm the only one certified to work on the i8. I can attest it's a completely different engine from the M3.
