My special needs son loves trains 🚆🛤🚃🚄🚅🚇🚈🚉🚊🚝🚞🚋🚟! He and I both really like geared steam locomotives 🚂⚙ like the Shay engines with their 3 pistons that move up and down instead of side to side, I think it is a very interesting mechanical system!
Shay 5's whistle blasts on the curve near Durbin are pretty epic. It's as if she was shouting "Durbin, we have returned!" Kudos to the folks at Cass for FINALLY getting that Greenbrier line rebuilt.
As usual, an outstanding video. Were #5 and #11 the only engines active that weekend? I've been waiting my whole life to see the tri-fecta, Shay, Heisler, and Climax all operating at Cass. I thought with the opening of the Durbin line I might see that finally.
Thanks! #5 & #11 were the only engines serviceable as everything else was still wrapping up winter maintenance. The Heisler was under a tarp outside the shop as it’s waiting for shop space to open up. As for the Climax, I’d imagine it’ll be running for the Parade of Steam in June.
Awesome video! Quick question, I know you were brought to the crossings by Allegheny Run for the photo charter, but do you know if that area can be accessed on regular excursions, or is it private property?
Thanks! As far as I’m aware, the majority of the road to Hosterman is public as there is a trail access point near the crossing. It’s a grey area once you get closer to it since you’re in closer proximity to yards, houses, etc. I’d imagine the roads aren’t in the best shape, so that would probably be your only shot of the train if you were to chase. If you do end up going there, it would probably be a safer bet to shoot from the trail crossing.
