Absolutely spectacular footage. It's among the most beautiful I've ever seen of Shay 5. There's something just magical about steam operations in the snow.

I have C&O Employee Timetable #153 from April 1966 that instructs C&O Greenbrier Subdivision crews: (i) CASS, W. VA. - Before entering that portion of Passing Siding at Cass between the water tank and the west switch, it must be known that this portion of track is clear of scenic railroad equipment movements.
Of interest is "scenic railroad" was not capitalized, nor did it mention "Cass Scenic Railroad" by name. In any event, by that late date there was seldom if ever more than one C&O train on the line at any given time, so the passing siding probably didn't see much C&O use. C&O had closed the train order office at Cass around 1965, and other than occasional hoppers of coal for the Shays, there probably wasn't any C&O business at Cass ever again.
Nearly 60 years on, we can still enjoy the "scenic railroad equipment movements" even though the C&O hasn't run up that valley since December 28, 1978. Beautiful to see #5 in the snow.

Thank you for the beautiful video.
Most of my family is from Cass. My Great-Uncle, Kyle J. Neighbors, worked on the train and also started the logging museum there. His Dad, Calvin B. Neighbors, worked the night shift at the lumber mill as a stationary engineer until he was 70 years old.
Other family of mine from Cass include the Varners, Sheets, Puseys, etc.
I believe it was May, 2024 when I met and spoke with Mr. Artie Barkely at the "filling station" in Green Bank. He worked as an engineer on the train...
