  • With so much conflicting information around the best method to use, euthanising a chicken at home can feel like a daunting act, and it is important to feel confident performing the procedure correctly.
Check out the video as Dr Sez chats through the pros and cons of each method, and performs a demonstration of decapitation. Don't worry, the demo patient is a happy, calm, pet hen who walks away scott-free!

I live in America. I am a backyard chicken lover. My flock is small. I'm keeping it at 10 chickens. They are a hobby, they are pets. Unfortunately I don't have a vet in the area that will euthanize chickens. I have a couple chickens who are getting older and this video was so well made. I will have to do this by myself so the instructions using the towels and severing the head will be my option. Because they are pets my husband can't get through this process. I love my chicken and I will now know how to help them pass humanely. You are right the chicken people in the US can do terrible things to kill chickens. Very well done. Thank you so much!

Thank you for acknowledging tye reality that not all chicken owners are able to access a vet. This information is much appreciated.

Thank you so much. I just spent an hour looking at tutorials for humane chicken euthenasia and this is the one. Thank you so much. My husband and i live in the country and are considering chickens, but i want to be absolutely sure we are ready for all stages of their life first. It occurs to me that regularly going through these motions with your chicken throughout their life would be good, to make it so they are used to them, and not afraid when the time comes. Regularly wrapping in towels and given affection, regularly covering the face when holding. Regularly laying them out on a surface in this manner with lots of gentle affection. Even calmly regularly placing their heads in between the nails like you show. Being sure that not only they are familiar and unafraid of the process, but you are also very comfortable with it. I know it seems morbid to do that. But id rather them, and us, be as calm and comfortable as possible. Seems the benefit outweighs any morbid feelings.

I live in the US, by the way, so im.so thankful your country thinks these things through better. The US versions are just not up to your humane standards. ❤

I have a few young roosters that will be eaten shortly, I have some experience, if a chicken is held in a certain way with feet gripped they extend the neck then its a simple chop on to a block with a machette and the head is removed I then drop the body in to a container for a few minutes (because I am not a fan of the whole flapping around or worse running around) yes maybe the head has feeling but hardly conscious as there is no blood pressure (like fainting at the slightest drop in blood pressure which happens to all of us). Its a necessary function of caring for farm animals and otherwise these species wouldn't exist.
Thanks for your video very well made and glad to find my methods comply with NZ law, good as that's where I am, love from Edgecumbe.

I know I may face this one day and sure do dread it. Do you need to move the feathers aside, will they make the cut more difficult/slow?

I would love to know your opinion on the 'Humane Poultry Dispatcher' available in Australia - maybe elsewhere as well. I have always used the decapitation method but since coming by the 'Dispatcher' it is my preferred choice.

What is wrong with blunt force??
I guess it is a bit hard to carry out, but as long as one is capable of doing it right, I can not see why it would inhumane.

Important to note that rules vary from country to country, and it seems that what can be required in one country is out-lawed in another :o
In my country I believe the law requires a combination of the two (last) methods: first a cervical dislocation, and then quickly followed-up with decapitation.
In the US I believe you might be required to knock the bird unconscious and then decapicate, but knowing how much force to apply to knock a bird unconscious takes experience (if not enough force is applied you just end up torturing the poor bird, and if you apply too much force you might crush its scull - worst case without killing it instantly)
