Agree, the biggest snub is to Jethro Tull. Dozens of albums, decades of music. Brilliant compositions and excellent musicianship. Self-taught flutist Ian Anderson is a genius. Perhaps it's the line in Baker Street Muse, "I have no time for Time Magazine or Rolling Stone". Do ya think? I can't imagine why Tull hadn't been inducted years ago. I'm sure Ian isn't losing any sleep over it.
Yes Biggest snub to me too. I know Jann Wenner hated Tull and Anderson and of course Ian doesn’t suck up to anyone. But should be irrelevant. Full accomplishments and musical legacy and uniqueness more than qualifies them.
1. Jethro Tull 2. Grand Funk Railroad 3. Three Dog Night 4. Emerson Lake Palmer 5. Blue Oyster Cult 6. Styx 7. Foreigner 8. Boston 9. REO Speedwagon 10. Kansas 11. Peter Frampton 12. Iron Maiden 13. Scorpions 14. Ozzy (Randy Rhoads) 15. Dio 16. Triumph 17. UFO 18. Bad Company 19. Sweet 20. Electric Light Orchestra 21. Motley Crue 22. Whitesnake 23. RATT 24. Dokken 25. Queensryche 26. Motorhead
Great comprehensive list. Personally, I've never been a big fan of Three Dog Night, but they certainly were really big, and you're not alone in wanting them in. Thanks so much.
The Kingston Trio * Peter, Paul & Mary * The Spencer Davis Group * Jan & Dean * The Monkees * Jethro Tull * King Crimson * Emerson, Lake & Palmer * Blood, Sweat & Tears * Kool & The Gang * Commodores * Foreigner
We all have our favorites, and what's favorites for us is valid, because all music is personal and efffects us all individually. To me....I would vote for Tull, Crimson, ELP and Foreigner from your list. But that's just me. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
Well said Alan. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is a private for profit entity, so I guess they can put in anyone who may increase traffic at the museum. However, it's not been a hall of rock & roll for some time. Willie Nelson is an American Treasure, but not rock & roll...same with Dolly Parton and so many other recent inductees. It would be akin to enshrining Eddie Van Halen into the Bluegrass Hall of Fame. Until the MC5, Grand Funk, and The Jgeils Band get in, it's simply the Hall of Pop-Culture not Rock & Roll....😒
Well said, my brother! We all know what the glaring omissions from the R&R HoF are, but it's really important to see them all in one video, especially with the added visual aid of seeing the albums. I mean, some of the bands' discographies are so rich that you'd think they'd have been in the HoF ages ago. It's a shame, really...
Thanks so much for watching and commenting. Exactly. Sometimes when you see it you’re like wow. It really is quite a body of work. How can they not be in. Thanks again
The year: 2400 A.D. The forgotten pile of rubble: Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Still selling albums and revered by millions: Jethro Tull. This shall come to pass.
Sorry forgot to mention George Michael sang, wrote, arranged, produced and played most of the instruments on his albums a real genius who has duets with Queen,Aretha Franklin,Stevie Wonder,Elton John,Ray Charles,Tony Bennet,Pavarotti,Whitney Houston ,Mary j Blige,Paul McCartney etc and even turned down Michael Jackson and received a letter from Sinatra stating how good he was
Great video and enviable music collection! After the results were announced today, I spent a good chunk of my day thinking about the acts who’ve gotten snubbed over the years…
Thanks so much. That's my main issue, get the legendary rock acts that have been snubbed in to the hall (most have never even been nominated) before inducting the ones that they've been doing that in many ways fall outside the general consensus of hall of fame worthy rock and roll music.
You are spot on with your analysis of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. First of all let's just say what it really is, it's a business, and will always be a business first. Not too much to do with musical legacy or achievement if you're not in the first wave of Rock and Roll including the British Invasion (50s, 60s, there are a few exceptions). The Hall needed those bands and artists to get off the ground. They were pioneers and they had to let them in regardless of how long they were together or how many hits they had. Now there's several who aren't even Rock and Roll artists in the truest sense of the word who are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and dozens of Rock and Roll artists with large catalogs and years in the business who will never get a look let alone have a shot of getting in. It's a total joke! The place is run by a small cartel of successful music executive types in corner offices who's bottom line is strictly profit. The list you showed of the nominees pale in comparison to stacks of CDs you displayed of the bands that should rightfully be inducted and are not, this sadly happens year after year. The fix is in! It's like any corporation, you have to sell to a younger market to sustain profitability and viability even at the expense of those who rightfully deserve to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame even though the organization would vehemently deny this theory. It's a tragedy and a disgrace.
Thanks for your spot on explanation. You’ve described the situation perfectly. It really is sad but seems to be typical of the world we live in. Ratings money clicks. That’s all that seems to matter.
If these execs want to have more bodies visit the Museum, all they have to do is simply lower the damn price of a ticket. Sorry, but these days your average family in Cleveland cannot afford the price of a ticket. If any of you reading this disagree, it's probably due to your living in a safe bubble. I haven't gone to the Museum in years. IT COSTS TOO DAMNED MUCH!!!
@@davereese6614 I've never been there so no idea of the cost but that's a shame. Getting to the point and average family can't afford anything anymore. I just heard the movie theater chain AMC will start charging more for better seats. No one's going to the theaters now, so lets charge more. ...crazy.
@@davereese6614 Everything costs too much. We are definitely turning into a have and have not society. Have you seen the price of concert tickets? To me it's all a price gouge. Someone's always willing to pay the money no matter what, even if they can't afford it. I went to The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame two weeks after it opened in 1995. I don't remember what I paid but it wasn't extravagant by any means. The museum was well- lit with natural light, big rooms and high ceilings. Some of the displays were fantastic. Having said that I was disappointed that some of the artist that were not included at that time but I always thought they would get in soon. NOT TRUE! I've waited almost 30 years for some of these groups or artist to get inducted (and rightfully so) and probably will never be. I had no idea what a political shit show and mess this place was until about 10 years ago. I will never go again. It cost too much now and they disrespect artist and groups who are Rock and Roll and should rightfully be in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
There needs to be a year when they look at early artists who played "Good Time Rock and Roll." For instance, The Turtles, The Monkees, and Paul Revere and the Raiders were HUGE multi-media stars in the 60's. (Radio, TV, magazines.) I know, I was there!!
Concur with Marty. For me, it's more about the artist's interpretation of the song (whether they wrote it or not). Examples would be Aretha's cover of Respect, Cash's cover of Hurt. Drake, Fang, and Smitty made PRTR a rock juggernaut (no disrespect to those before and after). The Turtles did more for folk rock than The Byrds IMO. As for The Monkees, it's totally irreverent that they didn't write most of their hits. 4 straight #1 albums, based on their interpretations and dynamic. That being said, The Hall has become a diluted joke that really needs to drop the pretense of honoring rock. Excellent video and analysis!
shocking what groups were never even nominated !!!! You explain it so well...yes, I was a '70's, '80's kid....remember all the success of these neglected bands....DAMN....BOSTON and Jethro Tull, Kansas ignored?? Aqualung and More Than a Feeling are beyond huge examples of their megahits... The R& R Hall of Shame indeed......yes.."it is a joke" ..
You blew my mind. Marshall Tucker is my favorite country rock and Tull is the biggest head-scratcher. But that Wishbone Ash T-shirt, caught me by surprise. I thought only a few of us ol' hippies knew about them. Great stuff. I do feel bad for the older groups (like Guess Who, Three Dog Night, Paul Revere, etc.) the new voters have no clue.
Mentioned in other videos - I'm in the minority but I love Caught In The Act the best. Also love Bosnia too. Don't listen as much to the first live album. Spectacular live band for sure.
That is the best argument I have heard! Goes beyond emotional! Kudos!!! 👍 Went to the HOF in 2012. I was disappointed. I hope it has improved. Love your Grand Funk & BOC visuals! Agree with Tull!!!
Thanks so much. I've never visited there. Kind of lost my interest in going, which is probably silly. But I guess one day I'll visit, although by then I imagine the rock stuff I like will be buried in a basement somewhere there...lol. thanks again.
Supertramp made some of the best albums from 74 to 79, with the hit songs to go along with them. I reckon a movie or show feature will get them a nomination.
I do like Supertramp. Does seem like having a show or movie is a great way to get nominated and get in. Don't think I see that happening for Supertramp lol, but maybe they'll eventually get in for that great album run you talked about.
This museum is misnamed. It should have been named the Pop Music Hall of Fame. It's full of artists that never played a note of rock, and missing many important rock artists. That's the reason the fans get frustrated with the inductees. Ironically, the museum would not have gotten off the ground as well when it opened during rock's heyday had it been named the Pop Music Hall of Fame, but would have been better off today as rock n roll as a genre no longer rules the charts. It changed it's formula to include artists outside of rock to broaden it's appeal to a larger audience, but never bothered to mention it to the fans hoping no one would notice their sleight of hand moving away from rock's diminishing share of the market. The roster looks phony to rock fans because it is.
I have many thoughts on this, but I posted this on Feb. 2 on Twitter in response to Billy Joel tweeting about Warren Zevon and Cyndi Lauper getting inducted into the RnRHOF: "The lines between inclusion and exclusion have become so blurred, I'm not sure what the qualifications are anymore to be inducted into the @rockhall. Are we going to induct individuals based on one hit album while ignoring artists with longer and much more successful careers?"
Wow - yes - we are totally on the same page. I guess since the beginning they've been doing this to a certain extent. Like I mention Richie Valens. And there are exceptions. There are legendary artists who made an incredible impact with one album like The Sex Pistols....of course now there are like 100 Sex Pistols albums. But it's getting ridiculous to me now, when you look at the mammoth and hugely successful discographies of Tull, Grand Funk and so many more and they're overlooked by a Cyndi Lauper who had 1 great album, 1 really good album, and she didn't even write the hits. And it goes on and on. But I guess the whole world is "political" and who you know and who you suck up to, and how you manipulate the system.....it's hard to succeed in a big way by not playing the game..... Thanks.
You´re absolutely right, Alan! A band like Jethro Tull should be high in that range. Beside this I always see a great difference between American and European bands if it comes to awards in the US. There are bands top in the list that are rarely known in Europe an there are bands, who are top in Europe seems not even to be noticed in the States. Example: I never saw a band like SLADE in an american award-list. These four guys published a string of great records in the 70th and 80th. Forget the crazy outfits and just listen to their songs, all writen by themselves (Holder, Lea) . Their influence to other groups, even in america, has been huge. But at last: music is not sports. It´s all about personally taste. A man who runs the 100 meters in 9,6 sec is better than a man who needs 10,2 sec. But whose music is "better"? Is a better selling act even so a better musican? There are no best of the best when it comes to art or music. I agree to your words that this list of the HoF doesn´t represent qualitiy or influence of the artists but more diversity und selling-rates in the US.
Absolutely. Being an Anglophile I love digging into the discography’s of legendary UK bands that have little to no impact in the US. Oftentimes there’s amazing music there. There’s gold in them hills and it’s so much fun too. But in the end you’re so right. It’s all our own ears and what gives us pleasure. Music is ultimately very personal and there is no right or wrong. But there is some levels of music that is not debatable. Like Beatles Stones Whio Dylan. And to me Jethro Tull being in the shall Of Fame. Lol. Thanks.
@@TheAlanRosenbergShow Thank you for your answer! That´s quiet unusual, but it prooves, that you really read the words of your followers and react. And yes Rosenberg my dad told me when I was young means "Hill Of Roses". And that's a beautiful thing.... Thanks again.
I agree with you for the most part. So Alan, since you asking what others think. I have to make the case for my girl Cyndi who have a huge fanbase & leading the rock hall of fame fan vote at #1 for days. She been for awhile on the top 500 artists of Spotify with the most streams. I know her biggest success from her two albums & her third album only sold half a million copies in the USA with only one song on the #6 position for I Drove All night, not a success compared to her previous ones. Her blues album in 2010 did well, #1 for thirteen weeks at Blues Charts with seven songs at top 25, including a #1 hit, and got her a grammy nomination. Her dance/edm album got her two #1 at dance charts with grammy nomination. Not to forget her success on Kinky Boots musical, getting a Tony & Grammy for the songs she wrote for this musical. She is a talented, versatile & underrated artist. Reo Speedwagon deserves to be inducted, great music from this band. Not sure if Toto got inducted, another band i like.
Thanks for your comments - Again - I'm a fan of Cyndi... at least the first two albums. Enough that I went to see her live at MSG. But that was a long long time ago. I appreciate her diversity - Kinky Boots on Broadway, her eczema commercials on tv, a Blues album (I don't know how many you have to sell to be #1 on the blues charts...but doesn't matter - good for her doing a blues album). I just don't think her rock and roll career should get her in YET. Maybe later, but not before the other artists I mentioned who have much larger and in my opinion much better long term careers. Just my opinion. Thanks again.
@@TheAlanRosenbergShow with all that mentioned above, Cyndi's influence on the generations after is on the same scale as Madonna. In the MTV era, both Madonna and Cyndi were game changers and shook the musical landscape up. And possibly for the fact that Girls, Time and True Colors (as singles) still outshines many artist entire album output and lives on radio decades beyond sticker date. Cyndi has been eligible since 2008, this is her first nomination. She's waited long enough. It took Pat Benatar how long? Cyndi is in her 40th year in her career and still moving forward. Besides her diverse music portfolio which many of the artist do not have, she has a very lengthy philanthropic history; not just LGB but many other humanitarian causes. She's still active in the biz with touring and other projects still in the pipeline. I believe her long term career still remains at a level of high profile as those still in the game.
@@Planetcharr Seems like Cyndi has a great shot at getting in this year. We'll see. She's certainly has been able to maintain a very successful career these decades. Whether it's show productions, Japanese commercials, philanthropy or her LGB support - all valuable and I don't doubt her humanitarian efforts. But to the general music public - her musical success is based on the first two albums - great albums indeed. I saw her live on the True Colors tour with Eddie Money opening - was great.
8:00 Is it the "Rock n Roll Hall of fame" or ... "Rock n Roll MUSIC hall of fame." They say diversity means less white people, but in Rock n Roll it means less white men.
I also meant diversity in music. Dolly Parton etc - now Willie Nelson, Missy Elliott and so many others - just call it the Popular Music Hall of Fame - because these people are not really Rock 'n Roll.
That's just that point at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. THe Hall is run by critics who think that rock and roll is about more than white guys with guitars. And it is, But they induct acts that are so far from rock and roll , they've lost their focus, Plus, the ywant to own the rockists and nominate acts that will piss the moff - hene, Madonna in her first year of eligibility. And it's interesting how selective rock critics' idea of diversity can be. When rock critics make lists of the best albums of all time, the list is very diverse, but when they makes lists of the worst albums of all time, a great deal of space on those lists are taken up by white men. Merely enunciating verbally . . .
They sure did. Grand Funk was like the ultimate people's band. They weren't alone though. Uriah Heep was another one. critic "if this band makes it, I'll have to kill myself". lol. Even Led Zeppelin was critically mauled by Rolling Stone for a long time. I have hundreds of those old magazines and often funny to see how band's reputations change over the decades. People don't remember, but I have the mags to prove it. Critics didn't consider John Bonham a great drummer back in the day. Karen Carpenter finished ahead of him in a poll one year and it severely depressed him apparently. But you're right in that critics never came around to Grand Funk - still hated and not appreciated...unfortunately.
Yes I agree. But the majority of the world just wants entertainment, don’t dig deep into music, don’t care about lip syncing or really playing live, or if the artists write there own songs, etc. just want entertainment and a big show and production. For example I drive my poor wife crazy with this stuff as she loves the Super Bowl halftime show or Grammys or other music shows. They’re giving the people what they. Us who take real music real seriously. Well we’re kind of the outsiders. Unfortunately.
Totally agree. Iron Maiden got enough votes by the fans last year, but they were ignored. And I’m a huge Maiden fan. Judas Priest got in, so what, heavy metal fans should be catered for now for the next 10 years?!? Where’s Kansas? Supertramp? Wishbone Ash, Grand Funk, Jethro Tull, Pixies! But hey, hip-hop, that’s rock right?!? Like you said, Blue Oyster Cult! Where are the Riot Grrrls? Sleater Kinney, Bikini Kill, if you want to include women include the ones who can play instruments! Gah!!! Its like the baseball hall of fame ignoring Larry Walker until the very last second he was eligible because God Forbid they let in a Canadian!
The only reason that hall of fame is there is because off Hard Rock fans from the 70 and 80 that listened to WMMS the Buzzard . In Cleveland , not this Bebop Disco , Country , Rap music that they have twisted into calling Rock.I get having a total show of music but a lot of Rock band have not mad there politically correct image and that sucks!
My ballot is Iron Maiden, Joy Division, White Stripes, A Tribe Called Quest & George Michael. Michael was as big as Michael Jackson and Praying for Time is as good a song as exists in the 90s. Iron Maiden should have been in a decade ago. They laid the road for what metal even is. White Stripes are the best band of their generation. Better than The Strokes. The next in this vein to be nominated should be Arcade Fire. Tribe is exception to the rule. When everyone else was doing gangsta rap Tribe took the mantle from De La Soul and rocked jazz rap to legendary heights. Joy Division...I am actually offended they are nommed with the post Curtis New Order in tow. Both of these bands should have been in the rock hall a long time ago. Unknown Pleasures and Closer are both top 50 albums ever. New Order had an entirely separate legacy and should be inducted on those worthwhile strengths. But, hey. If you are a clueless jackass member of the rock hall, sure. Joy Division/New Order is a no brainer.
Forgetting about who I wish was nominated and dealing with reality, I think you're choices are spot on. No doubt Iron Maiden, White Stripes, George Michael should be in based on success, respect and influence. I know nothing about Tribe Called Quest. I of course no of Joy Division / New Order but was never my type of music. I'm a big fan of Sheryl Crow and I would vote her in. I would also put Kate Bush in for her originality and massive success and influence in the UK. Thanks so much.
@@TheAlanRosenbergShow It is nice to have a dialogue with you, Alan. I get the fan bias. I have it myself but try to look at things objectively. also. Crow had a nice career starting with MJ as a backup singer. Her zenith was the late 90s as a solo artist but I don't know how much she directed anything. She plays to the academy's bias to roots rockers tho. Tribe is worth investigating. I loved them in the day. I have to admit tho when I actually voted it was for Willie Nelson instead. Listen to Low End Theory. That is their best. They will or should get in eventually.
@@tristramcoffin926 I’ll have to check out Tribe. I know nothing of them. Big long term fan of Crow. She’s the real deal to me. Writes produces plays. Thanks again
@@TheAlanRosenbergShow I think you will be rewarded. I voted for Willie instead just cuz he is another guy the Rock Hall has failed who should have been in many years ago. I mean, I figure first ballot country music hall of famers like Willie should at least be in the rock hall within 5 years. How has this not happened already?
i finally found out that the hall of fame enters all genres of music not just rock,so they should really change the name of the hall of fame to music hall of fame
Thanks. I certainly thought of Humble Pie - I am a fan (I'm a huge Frampton fan - huge). The fact is, at least to me, Pie's discography is very hit or miss. Listening to all their albums can be very.....trying.....I love Rock On and Smokin' and of course the live album(s) are amongst the best ever. But so many of the other albums can be......a tough listen. But of course 3 amazing albums is more than some of the current inductees so, yea, it fits the criteria. Thanks so much.
The J. Geils Band were nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the years 2005, 2006, 2011, 2017, and 2018. So, perhaps that makes them not being inducted even more sad. Hopefully soon.
Wow - that's amazing information to me. I had no idea they were ever nominated. Makes me feel a little better. I feel bad for them in that the majority of the population thinks Freeze Frame and Centerfold and that's it. And it's a shame. Perhaps the curse of having such a dominating hit that overshadows an excellent long career. Thanks for that info..Appreciate it.
Thanks so much. I would imagine itheyll be a shoe in. But with the Hall of Fame, you never know. You’re definitely correct after Judas Priest, Maiden has to be in.
Someone on the membership team is really motivated for getting Rage in. They had a really good debut, a great single on a bad album as the follow up...a good third album and then were no longer relevant. I don't believe they belong in the rock hall. Love them in the 90s but nah.
I'm not really of fan of theirs as well. I can appreciate them. Morello is an incredible guitarist. He took the E Street Band to another level when he played with them and that's saying something. They have an air of importance with their politics and album cover graphics which helps. I think they'll get in, but certainly wouldn't be my choice either.
I agree with Jethro Tull, Even Boston and a few other you mentioned. How about Poco? The have a lot of music as well. And to top it off have a lot of members that moved to the Eagles. Isn't that influence? Sure they were formed for the express purpose of feeding Linda Ronstadt and the Eagles. That happened while making quality music themselves. Isn't that the purpose of the award? After all Black Sabbath the band deemed Grandfather's of heavy metal that others incorporated their music into theirs that kept the genre going. I know for many years people say rock is dead. It isn't. Rap and others took out instruments added computer generated music in its place. A bad thing for music unless you want to say someone pounding on a table talking on the phone is music. Or talking on the phone while downloading sounds and beats to go with it. A single person. Sounds like those people who performed as one man bands way back with a instrument and drum attached to their back with a monkey with a cup collecting money. Music has gotten lazy and or people with little or no talent musically. Not interested in learning a guitar piano drums etc. Or couldn't afford them to learn it.
I like Poco and have many of their albums. I wouldn't put them in the Hall Of Fame considering all these other much more qualified bands in my opinion. But Poco was certainly an influential band with some great members passing through it. Are the Flying Burrito Brothers in - no touching their first three albums in my opinion.
Thanks so much. Are they clueless, or constantly giving in to simply putting in "popular" people so it generates big ratings and catering to diversity including country and rap and pop so further generate big ratings and show inclusiveness that really doesn't have anything to do with rock and roll music. Seems obvious to me. At this point change the name to the popular music hall of fame to generate ratings and money.
Like you said, they ingore Kate Bush because she is British. As a Norwegian I have to watch all those music VH1 things calling A-ha a one hit wonder. Really USA? They haven’t had top 10 albums in the second (UK) and 3rd (Germany) music markeds in the World these past 30 years? They had a James Bond song. They performed at Live 8, they have sold over 100 million albums and singles world wide. One Hit Wonders? Try Googling things… jeesh. They should be in the Rock and Roll hall of fame just as much as Duran Duran or Notorious B.I.G. who I am sure did not release 11 studio albums from 1985 to 2022!
We can be very blind here in the USA, based on what we're exposed to. Considering how much I follow music, I was totally unaware of the success of A-ha although I knew they had some other success in the UK. So certainly thanks for bringing it to my attention as well.
I've never watched the show, but of course I know it brought Kate Bush into the US consciousness now. Could they do it with Family....wow....we will see.
I get that, but if the industry is going to give out awards for what's best and create a hall of fame for who they decide are the greatest of all time, it's certainly a worthy topic to discuss and give our opinions on.
@@TheAlanRosenbergShow Discussing and giving opinions is fine, but there comes a point where we just can't let this Hall of Fame bother us anymore. The industry is no better than you or me (and their snubs, and even questionable inductions definitely show this), and the industry just uses their immense resources to have a greater societal say and influence over the discourse with their silly little "hall of fame". The way that institution is run is laughable, and this is someone whose favorite artist (Prince) got in first-ballot, along with Eminem (a rapper), another one of my favorites. What they've done with barring so many notable acts is almost *objectively* wrong, even as art itself is discussed subjectively.
I have to say, I love the way you write. Thanks so much for your comments. In a way, it's like a fun sport. Each year the Hall of Fame does their nominations and elections and it becomes big news and therefore creates a lot of commentary. So of course at that time, I like to express my opinion as well. Nearly four decades in, and people are still complaining about the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inducting non-rock artists, even though they've been doing it since the very beginning. R&B artists James Brown and Ray Charles were among its first inductees in 1986. And the first female inductee was soul artist Aretha Franklin in 1987. It's never been solely rock artists who have been inducted into the RRHOF, so I don't understand why people are still kicking up such a fuss about artists from other genres making the cut. It's more about the impact an artist or band had--as well as their influence--than the genre they're from.
What you're saying is very true. But at least for me, there are still so many "amazing, classic, hugely successful and influential "rock" bands" that are not even being nominated. And it seems like the Hall of Fame has no permanently forgotten them and moved to later decades where the big successful artists many would consider outside of rock music. I just say, get those rockers in first. Then include the later day outside rock artists. Just my opinion. But apparently lots of others as well. It's not so much, exclusion, Just include more initially of whats more "appropriate" to the name of the Hall - then cast the wider net.
Hi Alan So you have more Kate Bush down in your basement .The late Warren Zevon i like, i love that song Werewolves of London from 1978. Excitable Boy is a cool album. I agree with you on Blue Oyster Cult. Are Blondie in ? , if not they should be. I agree with what you say, all those groups that haven't been acknowledged. @@warrentom6537I get it - the numbers are pretty impressive - they have a long career. Based on who they're putting in now, it could make sense. Personally I think they should now change the name of it to the Popular Music Hall Of Fame. Then they would fit better. But for me, and what I believe the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame should be, The Spinners would not be in it. The Spinners are not at the pinnacle of the greatest rock and roll bands in history...to me. They were a popular group for a period of time and I would see them on The Midnight Special and Soul Train. Impressive for what they are, but not amongst the true greatest rock groups of all time....just my opinion of course.
I had to laugh. Cher was on the Gram Norton show just months ago bitterly complaining about never being nominated for The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. She stated and I quote "they can go *uck themselves!" "I would never go in now not even if they paid me a million dollars"..... Dolly Parton's 2023 turd of a rock album was a laugh too. Despite the stellar lineup and millions spent on this expensive project it bombed. After the big first week of sales it fell off a cliff. Only 5 weeks on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart and the worst reviews of her career. Is Melanie the only Woodstock performer NOT inducted and never nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame?
I didn't know that about Cher. Well Dolly initially didn't want to go in the Rock Hall either. The Dolly rock album - look at the cover - thankfully at least Mick Jagger had the balls to turn her down. She's a great, legendary talent and songwriter, but at this age to put out a "rock" album to legitimize her rock induction....well that says it all really. As for Cher, lets see what she does. I imagine she's a shoe in...I would think.
Cyndi Lauper discography She's So Unusual (1983) True Colors (1986) A Night to Remember (1989) Hat Full of Stars (1993) Sisters of Avalon (1996) At Last (2003) Shine (2004) The Body Acoustic (2005) Bring Ya to the Brink (2008) Memphis Blues (2010) Detour (2016) All great albums & she sometimes "rocks" ! Lauper has sold approximately 50 million albums, singles and DVDs.
I have the first two and saw her live on the True Colors tour. Had Eddie Money opening. I like her. But for me, the Hall of Fame should be the pinnacle, and she's not there, for me, IMHO. But based on who they put in, it's possible.
Did I say Stormfront? lol - Stormwatch, Stormwatch, Stormwatch - Mouth was running faster than my brain. By the way I love Stormfront...I mean Stormwatch. Thanks. True Tull is definitely not American music. And I mean that in a good way. Thanks so much.

Iron Maiden is my biggest Rock n Roll Hall of Fame snub. But this artist is pretty close and while is seen as a Jazz icon he has a influence in all sorts of musical genres and that is the one and only legendary Mr John Coltrane the greatest saxophone player to walk the earth! Notable Rock acts that have been inspired by John Coltrane one way or another Pink Floyd David Crosby The Allman Brothers MC5 The Grateful Dead Blood Sweat & Tears King Crimson Jimi Hendrix Chicago The Doors Santana Steely Dan Patti Smith Joni Mitchell Notable R&B acts influenced by Coltrane include Kool & the Gang James Brown The JB’s Sly and the Family Stone If the Hall thinks Rock n Roll is about Youth Culture well John Coltrane was a icon for Civil Rights Activists in the 60s and was a hero to the Black Panthers So yeah he is a non Rock artist I think Rock fans can get behind in supporting him to get into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame At the very least he has influenced Rock music and made more of a impact on it more than someone like Missy Elliot or Whitney Houston lol.
John Coltrane. Interesting. I’m a fan for sure of Coltrane for sure. Without a doubt a true giant and one of the greatest. But not rock n roll obviously. So I wouldn’t put him in. But based on who they’re are putting in, we’ll perhaps it’s feasible. But not to me. But I also wouldn’t put in a lot that they have inducted.

@@ohsoedgy6888 I didn't know that Louis Jordan and Nat King Cole are in. Miles Davis - well he did some classic jazz fusion albums. It’s a private organization and they really want to get within the times I am glad to see though they finally decided to vote in the long overdue Link Wray so there’s that!
Yes. I mentioned that too. He’s literally an institution over there and deserves it. What a career. But in the US definitely more of a cult artist. Another example of US centric.
Valens is in for being a Pioneer. Which is an important category as his career was cut shot due to his death. Like fellow crash victim Buddy Holly though Holly had more hits. We will never know how much more these two would've done musically. The greatest omission IMHO so far is Jan & Dean. Jan created the Ca sound it was him Who put the Bomp. Barry Mann song J&D Answered in a song with the same title LOL.He was the one who along with The Four Freshmen and Chuck Berry that the Beach Boy's were copying. Surfin' was just Baby Talk according to Mike Love. Yes Brian co wrote with Jan some of J&D's hits. But he also co wrote with others who's songs went nowhere. So maybe Jan had just as much to do with the hits as Brain... Jan also did this Writing , Arranging , Producing(Yes all the Instruments not just a few words).... All while being a Full time Student mostly studying Medicine. He also was the one according to Lou Adler who put the main Wrecking Crew players in to play. People Brian used on his records. Jan according to Hal Blaine was the first to use 2 Drummers on the recordings. Both playing the same part at the same time. Earl Palmer (both are in the Hall as Sidemen. People like Leon Russel and Glen Campbell were regulars. All this ended in April 66 when Jan a true IQ level Genius suffered serious Brain damage in an auto accident. Fall of 66 they were to start filming a TV Show Jan & Dean on the Run who's Pilot had been picked up. Although he returned to the studio a year later. Nothing really became commercially successful. A 78 TV Movie bought them back out on the "Oldies Circuit " until Jan's death in 96 (?) He had to listen to the songs just before the show to be able to remember the words. But could still write all the Notes to all the Instruments. Now with his Left hand as his Right side was Paralyzed.
Thanks for that incredible information on Jan of Jan & Dean. I know very little about them, so I found it fascinating. Didn't know he was a main component of putting the Wrecking Crew together. Of course they played on countless recordings. Perhaps the most successful backing band of all time. As for comparing Richie Valens to Buddy Holly. Well i love Buddy Holly and his discography in such a few years is incredible. I still listen to him fairly regularly. I personally don't think Richie Valens comes anywhere close to Buddy Holly.
Iron Maiden have been around since before the 1980 debut. They tour and tour, sell out the whole world, even the US have started to remember them again. Did they get in last year? No. Fan votes not withstanding. Jethro Tull, even after returning with a new album critics loved, nada. But the Grammy’s managed to give them a heavy metal award, angering every Metallica fan everywhere. This year the Grammys handed out the rock and hard rock, heavy metal awards BEFORE the broadcast due to the «massive amounts of awards»! Are you kidding me?!? The Grammys are just hip-hop, rap and soul and that’s it, they TELL everyone they don’t give a shit about Rock or Heavy Metal, we know this, but the other «people» are called the ROCK AND ROLL hall of fame and they snub rock music over rap and hip hop? They allready have their awards, they OWN the Grammys! And you need a tv show to remind people who Kate Bush is?!? Disgusting. I agree with you 100% even if I’m an Iron Maiden fan. Maybe its a Scandinavian anglophile thing 😉
Thanks so much. There is no doubt Iron Maiden should be in the R&R Hall of Fame even if I don’t particularly like them. I can’t even watch the Grammys or the Hall Of fame. @@MortenAastad It really is an amazing thing. Rock still sells concert tickets but most of the audience simply wants the handful of hits they know from them listening to classic rock radio that feeds them those same songs. There are some exceptions but few and far between. And to an extent the rock music industry has created this. Like a mass suicide. I''ve heard radio DJ's talk about the new Springsteen, or Stones, or U2 album and saying how great it is and they then play Born To Run, or Satisfaction. It's sickening. Missy Elliot really? I remember her being extremely popular back in 2005-2008 when I listened to a lot of rap and hip how and she had no rock n roll in her at all. She was a fast paced rapper mainly. Back in the 70’s on the cover of Rock and Creem magazine, the bands that always seemed to grace their cover was Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Kiss and Jethro Tull!
Absolutely. But GRand Funk, Uriah Heep - so many made the covers and big stories. I actually own hundreds of those old magazines. What a great time it was.

Good stuff. Kate Bush around that time too. Her first album was 1978 with the great song Wuthering Heights. Hounds of Love with "Running Up That Hill" which hit number 1 in the US because of that TV show last year actually came out in 1985. Around that same time frame as many in your list.

Different opinions about which artist should be inducted & mixed reactions as usual. I think few rock bands from the 70's & 80's should get inducted before artists or bands that came after them. It took a long time for great Singers like Pat Benater & Tina Turner to get inducted in my opinion. Official fan vote leaderboard have Cyndi Lauper with the most votes so far. I like Sheryl Crow songs, but because Cyndi Lauper was nominated, my vote goes for her, just a fan, who likes her music, style & voice. To be honest i don't care for the others, Sheryl Crow & Cyndi on top of my list. Kate Bush not my cup of tea, since she came out in the 80's & heard few of her songs. Not sure what genre is her music, perhaps Indie pop.
Thanks so much for watching and commenting. Kate Bush is her own genre. Totally unique and totally not for everyone. She can be a very tough listen. But she's certainly a legend and royalty in the UK. I am a big fan of hers as well. Check out Wuthering Heights. One of my favorite songs ever. But if you don't like that you definitely won't like Kate Bush. Funny that it took Stranger Things to get her some popularity in the US and fifty years. Thanks again.

I been watching few videos of 2023 R&R Hall Of Fame. Few brings a valid point related to the criteria from R&R Hall Of Fame to become eligible for induction 25 yrs after release of first record. Influence & significance of the artist or band. Then Sheryl Crow for now, should not be considered. Nothing influential about her. Some very good songs from her, specially in the 90's. Kate Bush is original, and perhaps is her time to be inducted. But Cyndi Lauper is without doubt the most influential artist from the class of 2023 with timeless classics hits that still on the radio for decades & is no surprise her following with a decent lead of fan votes. Fashion icon & great singer. Soundgarden is a yes for me, from all the bands, i enjoy their music. Kate Bush can't touch Madonna in the UK. Madonna is the most successful female artist in UK Chart history 13 number #1 Hits & best female selling artist, including concerts. Not too familiar with Kate Bush, heard of her, never heard her music on the radio. No idea if Kate Bush does huge arenas, like Madonna or even sell more shows & doubt if she have a fan base like Madonna. No problem if she gets inducted, but not before Cyndi Lauper. My opinion, enjoyable video clip!
I didn't realize that Cyndi Lauper still had such a large and faithful following. I pretty much stopped listening to her after True Colors. I know that Kate Bush is an icon in the UK and considering she only toured once in her career and then returned for a historic run at the Hammersmith - she's very famous there. Virtually unknown in the US till now after STranger Things. Looks like Lauper may get in. I like her, but wouldn't be my choice - I think Sheryl Crow is a great talent. I'm actually a good size fan of Zevon and have a bunch of his stuff. For me Zevon vs Crow - though I really don't see the need to compare - they're very different of course. But I certainly listen to Crow more than Zevon. His catalog is for me a very mixed bag (as is Crow). Some great stuff and some ok stuff. When he was alive and well, he was a fairly successful artist but was covered substantially, especially by Ronstadt. His sad death of course, like most, raised his legend to an extent. As for influence, I don't think either are really a big influence, outside their circle. Regarding the Hall of Fame, it's completely become, as you described, the popular music hall of fame - please change the name. It's strictly about ratings, selling tickets and yes diversity etc. Little to do with quality in my mind.

I think the Rock Hall is a joke. It’s criminal that Jethro Tull, ELP, Paul Rogers, Peter Frampton, Grand Funk are not in. In addition I feel the Monkees and Love are at least worthy of one nomination. Quite frankly I feel the Rock Hall is a scam.
I agree - it's nothing now more than a money making / TV ratings attention award show that must cater to the general population to get ratings and people to buy and go. It should be renamed the popular music hall of fame.
ITS OBVIOUS HE HAS A RED HAT SOME WHERE WITH WHITE LETTERS SAYING MAKING AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, NOTHING LIKE THEM GOOD OL BOYS ..( DUKES OF HAZZARD THEME SONG IN MY BACKGROUND) WRITING THIS....
I no agree it’s becoming meaningless but certainly to me worth having a conversation about. It’s the only rock n roll hall of fame. Those of us who’ve spent a lifetime of love for rock music have a right and in some ways an obligation to comment on their absurdity.
Because you put so much “extra” effort into this video - pulling out all those hefty discographies and painstakingly citing example after example in order to validate your well-thought-out points - I am breaking a promise I made to myself. My pledge was to not engage in discussions about The RRHOF because I believe that it is an insult to every serious lover of R & R music. And I don’t think that The RRHOF has had any credibility for decades. My beliefs are based on the facts that you and many of your viewers have stated. The RRHOF is a business run by board members who play favorites to further their personal agendas to maximize profits and keep their egos fully inflated. Members of The RRHOF Foundation’s nominating committee vote for their friends and for those who will “pay them back” in any number of ways. Of the many offenses perpetrated by The RRHOF, perhaps the biggest is the focal point of your video, Alan: Inducting people who have very small discographies (I totally agree with what you said about The Go-Go’s and Cyndi Lauper) and/or those who have had massive commercial success, in spite of not having a great amount of talent, originality and influence. Moreover, like salt thrown into a wound, lots of these people get into the hall of fame way ahead of long-established artists whose big discographies exemplify true greatness. (Yes, formed in 1968, and The Moody Blues, formed in 1964, were not inducted into the hall of fame until 2017 and 2018, respectively. Contrastly, Foo Fighters, formed in 1994, were inducted in 2021, just two years after the band was eligible. On the other end of the spectrum, certain bands and artists get excluded from the “special club” for reasons that have nothing to do with the excellence and influence of their music. (Can we all shout “Jethro Tull” in unison?) In terms of credibility, how can any hall of fame be bonafide if it doesn’t operate with integrity? It can’t. And that’s why I think The RRHOF is total b.s. If the name “Hall of Fame” begins with the words “Rock and Roll,” a reasonable person should expect to find the hall filled with rock and rollers. It makes as much sense putting rappers, country music performers and pop music idols into The RRHOF as it does to put football players into The Baseball Hall of Fame and basketball players into The Ice Hockey Hall of Fame. Take a look at who’s been inducted into The Country Music Hall of Fame. You won’t find anyone other than country music artists and those associated with them. Check out The Hip Hop Hall of Fame, in New York City, which is dedicated to the music and culture of Hip Hop worldwide. You’ll see all the rappers who have so far been inducted into the RRHOF, but you WILL NOT see ANY rock ‘n’ roll artists, or anyone representing any other genre of music. There are MANY legitimate subgenres of rock ‘n’ roll. Rap, country music and “pure pop” (not to be confused with pop rock) are NOT subgenres. There are plenty of music halls of fame, including America’s Pop Music Hall of Fame, which is located in Canonsburg, PA. Each hall of fame exists to showcase a particular category of music by the artists who create that kind of music. Everyone has their rightful places. Let’s not pretend that those who ride race horses are synonymous with those who drive race cars.
I'm so glad you did respond and stated your opinion (and facts) so eloquently. I think it may also be that "rock" music as far as popularity on the charts doesn't exist. It doesn't sell. The classic bands can still sell tickets live in concert but haven't sold records (or even release new records) in decades. There's no radio for "new" classic rock releases. Whether its The Stones, The Who, Springsteeen - on and on - you won't hear the new releases on radio. So the awards shows and the charts are dominated by Rap, Country, Pop. I'm thinking the R&R Hall of Fame is another casualty of this ever expanding domination and "death" of rock music. Just a thought.
As I thought about your thoughts (say that fast, three times!) in your reply to my comments, I believe you’ve made some excellent points. Yes, as far as the charts go, rock ‘n’ roll doesn’t sell. And yes, radio does not play new music by classic, or any other kind of, rock artists. (Every time I listen to Iggy Pop’s new album, “Every Loser,” which was released the first week of 2023, I can’t believe that none of the awesome songs on this great album (IMHO) are getting airplay.) And, yes again, the charts and the awards shows are overrun by Pop, rap and country music. These dominant genres seem to be what the overwhelming majority of music listeners in today’s world want to hear. As with any successful business (and I think we can all agree that The RRHOF is, first and foremost, a business), the product focus obviously has to be on what sells the most, what is most profitable and what consumers will “keep coming back to buy.” Hence, as you stated, who The RRHOF inducts depends on who will bring high ratings to the televised ceremony and who will give cachet to the subsequent party, resulting in the continued viability of The RRHOF. All of this makes sense when viewed through the lens of business. What does not make sense to me, personally, is why The RRHOF should keep a name that NO LONGER accurately represents the genre of music for which it was named. This particular aspect of the various controversies surrounding The RRHOF has been a major thorn in my side for a very long time. For years, I’ve thought that the name should be changed to fairly represent the new direction that The RRHOF has taken. (You and many of your viewers seem to be on the same page as me, when it comes to that.) I say: Replace the words “Rock ‘n’ Roll” with the word “Music.” That would make this hall of fame palatable to me, personally, because it would make sense (to me, anyway), at the very least. Of course, the politics (and unfairness regarding discography size, elapsed time between band formation and hall of fame induction, preference for record sales over artist originality and influence, etc.) will always remain. That’s the reality of celebrating a so-called art from a business foundation (IMHO).
Allen first off the only reason they have the Hall of Fame nominees get into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is so they can have one big party every year ..doesn't really mean anything once an artist get in what happened nothing nothing changes I've been to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame a few times there's barely any mention of the artist that got in when you're there it's all a big joke don't fall for it man it's art not for a hall of fame. the artist don't care and the people of Cleveland care even less it's meaningless.. you ever hear of any of the artists complain they didn't get in no they don't cuz they know it's a joke
Interesting. I’ve never been there so surprised to hear not much there for each inductee. I know many artists say the don’t care. I know for instance Mark Knopfler didn’t even go to Dire Straits induction. I know some didn’t go because they literally couldn’t afford to go. But to me at least the idea of a rock hall of fame was a good one. And if it was better and more legitimate musically would’ve been nice and an honor to be in it.
@@TheAlanRosenbergShow yea man... artists are a lot more humble than football players.. Jim Morrison don't need no Hall of fame. . It's all just for a one night party.. a one night show..that's it.
30 years music fan here. Never heard of White Stripes in my life so they not as `influential` or that Tribe thing. Missy Elliot is typical woke proposal, non-rock. iron Maiden is on the list as usual - and as usual they will get nothing. Saxon is another great one...Motorhead, Y&T, Scorpions. You have mentioned BOC, Jethro Tull, ELP & Grand Funk Railroad - and I agree with you absolutely! Its shameful they never been nominated. What about Thin Lizzy, Ozzy solo, New York Dolls, MC5, Budgie, Crosby Still Nash Young, even Fairport Convention? You showed Bad Company - but what about Free itself? I mean George Michael? cmon... pop Shery Crow - yes, I would agree she should be there.
I actually think iron maiden is gonna get in this year but I guess we’ll wait and see. Honestly surprised you never heard of the white stripes. I’m not the biggest fan, but certainly Jack White and the white stripes were hugely successful and unique In their minimalist sound. He’s still hugely influential with third Man records. Thanks so much for writing and watching. I really do appreciate it.
IMO Cyndi Lauper is like a fine wine that gets better with age. You only have her first 2 albums which were her biggest hits. I recommend that you listen to her later albums like A night to remember, Hat full of stars, Sisters of avalon, Shine, At last, The body acoustic, Bring ya to the brink, Memphis blues, and Detour. She also has a great Christmas album, and as you mentioned she was in the great band Blue angel and they released a wonderful album which is really her first album because she wrote and performed all of the songs on it. btw, Cyndi was the first artist in chart history to have 4 top 5 singles from a debut album with Girls just want to have fun peaking at #2, Time after time her first number 1, She bop, reaching #3, and All through the night making it to #5. Money changes everything was also a hit from that album as well as her amazing cover of Prince's When you were mine. The truth is that Cyndi Lauper was a one woman revolution that opened the door for every female artist after her from Madonna to Lizzo. She was really the first female rock superstar. No woman ever had that kind of success before, so she's definetly a pioneer for women and a trailblazer.
Thank you so much for your incredible response. Super knowledgable and very informative. I am a fan of hers, though certainly not even close to the level you're at. I actually saw Blue Angel in Albany. I thought Girls Just Wanna Have Fun is an amazing album and I really liked True Colors as well. I actually went to see her at Madison Square Garden for True Colors tour and had Eddie Money opening (with special guest Ronnie Spector). It was an excellent show. I also have her Best of album. Clearly from a commercially successful standpoint, she peaked at True Colors and had a steady decline. But commercial success alone doesn't qualify you for the Hall of Fame, but it certainly is a major factor. I have heard parts of Night, Stars and Avalon. What I've heard was good. I imagine she has influenced other female performers that came after her. Truly how much, I don't know, but she certainly didn't reach anywhere near the level of a Madonna...at least after that initial flush of success with Girls. And there is no shortage of great female singers/rockers from the 60's and 70's who either had huge success (Ronstadt, Simon, Grace Slick, Tina Turner) or were influential (Genya Ravan, Elkie Brooks) and many more. My point overall is, Lauper's overall discography and her legend is based on one album (ok maybe two with True Colors), and that doesn't compare to the artists I showed. At least that's my opinion, and again I'm a fan of Lauper. If they want to put her in the Hall - that's fine. But much later on down the line. Thanks again for your wonderful and insightful comments. I love the give and take.
@@TheAlanRosenbergShow Well, if she does get in this year she'll be 70 years old. I'd love to see her do a kick ass show to show people that she could rock out with the best of them as you already know since you've seen her live. In any case to me she is the one and only queen of rock n roll.
Agree, I love Cyndi Lauper songs, popular ones & the others under the radar. Cyndi been leading the fan vote at #1, she really have a huge fan base, specially on the lgbtq community. Versatile artist than can sing about anything from pop, rock, dance, country & her success with her blues album that became #1 for thirteen weeks at Blues Charts with seven songs at top 25, including a #1 hit. Not to forget her success on Kinky Boots musical, getting a Tony & Grammy for the songs she wrote for this musical. She is a talented & underrated artist. Influential with her music & her style like no other artist when she was on the 80's scene.
@@adaalva8737 Again I'm a fan of hers, though not nearly at the level of you. I also see her in TV commercials constantly selling Eczema creme...lol. That and Kinky Boots doesn't get my vote for the R&R Hall of Fame....lol. Ok - sometimes we just have to laugh. Ok put her in....but after the other artists I mentioned....Thanks.
No problem. We all like what we like. No doubt Iron Maiden should be in even though I’m not a fan. But I discovered Crow when she started out and I’ve been a fan her whole career. She is the real deal but I understand some don’t like her music. Thanks.
It should be renamed the Music HOF. And by all means, include classical music. Because it is the basis of all other genres. Pacheco Bell Cannon in D the basis of most hits in any genre. If you don't believe me listen to Pacheco bell rant. Another one to listen to is thr 4 cord song. Sure they maybe comedy acts but listen closely as every hit and genre are covered in those 2 skits.
Funny in that you're not so far off. It's basically including every genre and there is some amazing classical music that's timeless. I mean Beethovens 9th seriously rocks in a way.
@@stevenmaginnis1965 certainly a legend. Woodstock performance alone. Mad dogs and Englishmen. His career obviously ups and downs but no argument from me.
Diversity is fine--when it's not mandated. It's already not a Rock and Roll hall of Fame, so Elliot, Crow, Nelson, belong as much as anyone else today. White Stripes too soon. Soundgarden not enough of a catalog, even tho I love Blackhole Sun. Iron Maiden---they are in the Metal hall of Fame and if I were them I'd refuse the nomination and be happy with that. Michael is POP, but the hall already left the door open. There are tons of legit rock acts that deserve to be in before these other deserving acts. Supertramp, Grand Funk, etc...
Thanks so much. I forgot to mention Supertramp. Yep totally agree with you. Like you said. The doors are open and no way to close them now. Change the Halls name.
This guy seems that he's from Mass. Boston/New Bedford (by his cap). How about Mountain, Yankee classic rock. Leslie West and Nantucket Sleighride. It's really good to hear that good old Yankee common sense and I'm a southern boy (love Miss. Queen). No wonder they're the ones that got the revolution going in the first place!
Thanks for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it. Interesting guess but I’m actually from Long Island. New York MB. Is North Bellmore but I do love a lot of that Boston rock ‘n’ roll. Thanks so much again.
@@TheAlanRosenbergShow Also like you, I've got a great appreciation for the British acts. If you talking about a great discography, how about Procol Harum? They're never mentioned. What are they too intelligent, too poetic, too artsy, too profound, too socialist? Why should that matter? I like meat and potatoes R&R too wether it's from Bad Co. (though I'm a lover of Free) or Grand Funk. Don't get me started about Tull!
@@dreuxdillahunty2793 thanks. Love your description. Meat and potatoes rock. Lol. I use that too. Perfect description to me. Regarding Procol Harum. I’ve seen the original band live. Have checked out many of their albums . One of my best friends was a big fan and turned me on to them but at the end of the day they just don’t totally grab me. I can’t figure out why. I own two of their albums. A great German import best of with 22 songs and the live in Edmonton album with orchestra. For me it’s enough. But of course whiter Shade Of pale is way at the top of my all time favorite songs. Amongst the top greatest songs of all time. Never tire of it. Thanks and sorry if I disappoint regarding Procol.
Is Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, i understand the frustracion of seeing Pop Stars and from others Genres getting nominated or inducted before rock bands and rock artists. Should be named Músic Hall Of Fame. Madonna, perhaps Queen of pop, not queen of rock and got inducted, so as Janet Jackson and others. Then Cyndi Lauper should as well, have at least few rock songs than these two i mentioned. Then Is time for Cher to get nominated and inducted. I like rock music but have a soft spot for Cyndi Lauper. Fan since she came out and still a fan. Missy Elliot and Kate Bush, no way, just my opinion.
First of all, I am not going to argue with anyone on this issue: its a waste of time. The annual argument about who "deserves" to be in the Rock Hall gets nastier and frankly more racist every single year. People want to have hard and fast rules about what rock and roll is and what it isn't and music doesn't work that way. Just because you don't like a genre of music, doesn't mean it is not worth recognition and respect. Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul, was inducted into the very FIRST class of the Rock Hall and NO ONE (at least no one with a brain) would argue that she doesn't belong there. I am not into hard rock or metal, but I would never say Iron Maiden doesn't belong in the hall because I think their music is just noise. They have been an extremely influential band to those who have come after them, which is the primary criterion for getting into the rock hall (the second being it must be at least 25 years since your first record was released). Like the music you like, but disparaging all the music you don't like and arguing it doesn't belong in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next to your heroes is elitist, classist and frequently in these comments, racist.
First I want to thank you for taking such time to open up this conversation and bringing in your perspective in such a well thought out way. When I talk about diversity, I'm referring to musical diversity in terms of genres. I remember and miss, the Billboard singles charts in the 60's and 70's (and I own books on them). They were amazing in that hit songs were comprised of every genre. Rock, Soul, Gospel, Country - didn't matter and hit radio played it all making listening to radio a wonderful diverse experience. But even then the chart was called POP music. There is already many hall of fames for genres of music - country, gospel etc. No doubt that when the R&R Hall of Fame was initially designed it would focus on Rock and Roll which granted casts a wide net. But there are many inductees, like a Dolly Parton who never ever considered themselves rock and roll. I know that rock music has (with the exception of selling lots of concerts tickets) pretty much died. You'll never hear new rock songs on the radio. Even the biggest rock stars don't sell many records anymore. I understand that Rap, Country and other genres sell all the records and win all the awards. I get it. I've no problem expanding the R&R Hall of Fame to include all these genres, but I feel over the last many years, it's dominated and eliminated so many "classic rock" acts that I personally feel should be inducted from even getting nominated. This is what I meant and mean. I really do appreciate your amazing comments and always welcome other opinions. By the way I hate Iron Maiden but no doubt they're a legendary hugely successful long running rock institution. Thank you.
@@TheAlanRosenbergShow Thank you for reading my post and for sharing your POV. Thank you also for respecting my viewpoint. I cannot count the number of times I have read people saying "Black music is not rock and roll. Those people need to get their own HOF." It is a POV that really irks my soul. Again, I appreciate people love the music they love, but that does not justify hatred and bigotry. I'm glad that is not your stance and that you are open to other POVs.
@@brickcitybrownchick I truly love your initial comment and your follow up. I could not agree more. For what it’s worth Rock n Roll is built on black music and not to harp on the subject but to me Chuck Berry was the original king of rock and roll. Anyway. Thank you for this excellent communication. We all need to listen to each other with open minds so we can learn from each other and grow as people. Thanks again
Yep, and I find it curious that in all these rant videos I rarely hear anyone mention Three Dog Night who sold out stadiums and had many popular songs.. Love Jethro Tull and their genre envelope pushing sound, but how about Blood, Sweat and Tears and their Jazz/Rock Fusion energy..? You may not like his political views, but Ted Nugent has been rocking hard forever with his unique sex chakra driven intensity..! How about George Thoroughgood and the Destoyers..? How many original truly rock and roll songs has he come up with in his lengthy career..? I don't particularly like Iron Maiden either, but they deserve to be in and Cheryl too, but sure as hell not before Jethro, Foreigner and others mentioned.. Peter Frampton has been part of the major scene in groups and solo for 50 damn years..! Missy Elliott..? hahaahahahahaha
Certainly Nugent was huge in the 70s. I agree his politics and hunting etc should have nothing to do with it. I’m not a big fan but that’s just me. I have two nice compilations and it’s more than enough for me. Again it’s all personal taste and no real right or wrong. But for me Three Dog Night is like Grass Roots. I have some singles and it’s enough. BS&T has some great stuff for sure. There’s so many that aren’t in the hall. Its really hard. Thanks
Yep. Thin Lizzy has a huge influential discography. I've never been a huge fan of Guess Who - Greatest hits album enough for me, but I love a lot of BTO.
If it has anything to do with being a good musician, KANSAS for sure, great band ! The more examples you gave, the more i lost respect for whomever is selecting those nominees, Rush only got in because of their loyal fans, Jan Weiner would never have put them in !
Will be interesting to see if they get in. Certainly Jack White and The White Stripes are one of the most unique and most respected and successful bands of the last couple of decades. I actually visited Third Man Records in person and was amazing. We'll see what happens.
Yea - many love them and they had some big years. For me.....I'm a moderate fan at best. I was a bigger fan of BTO, but I wouldn't put them in yet. Thanks.
Rock purist need to stick to rock and leave the other genres alone. The Spinners were one of the biggest acts of the 70s, had several top 10s and a formidable live show. Very much should be in. One problem, is the chronology. People who should've been in years ago, get mixed up with artist 20yrs behind them.
I actually like a lot of genres. I'm fairly diverse. And I think the Spinners has some really good songs. But so does a million other bands and artists. I was around in the 70's. The Spinners had many hits, they were not one of the biggest acts of the 70's. I don't remember multiple nights at MSG or the LA Forum or Shea Stadium. I remember them on Midnight Special.
@@TheAlanRosenbergShow well I think within the soul genre, The Spinners are a Hall of Fame act. I will just leave it at that. Taylor Swift does multiple nights at MGS too, so is popularity the barometer??? Alot of the "Rock" acts wouldn't even be considered if it was. There are more deserving artist not in and there's less deserving artist in. It's subjective. But it all comes from Little Richard and Chuck Berry anyways 🤷♂️

Thanks. Yep totally agree. It’s the hall of popular music to get high ratings and make money.

See my other comment - but absolutely true.
The Monkees were obviously huge and sold gigantic amounts of records. But still “prefabricated “. Some great tunes for sure though
No Brits should be getting awards.
Based on copying American music.
Them British Rock Bands we're copying...
shocking what groups were never even nominated !!!! You explain it so well...yes, I was a '70's, '80's kid....remember all the success of these neglected bands....DAMN....BOSTON and Jethro Tull, Kansas ignored?? Aqualung and More Than a Feeling are beyond huge examples of their megahits... The R&

Grand Funk Railroad set the tone for selling out stadiums and arenas. He didn't mention they had two good live albums too.
Thanks so much for your comment. You Definitely captured a part of what is going on
I have many thoughts on this, but I posted this on Feb. 2 on Twitter in response to Billy Joel tweeting about Warren Zevon and Cyndi Lauper getting inducted into the RnRHOF:

@rockhall.
Lol. Thanks.

Happy to see Ms. Crow nominated for 2023. Sheryl Crow needs to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame first time up. ☝️
Yea - I'm a big fan and I would definitely vote for her. She's the real deal.
"Rock n Roll MUSIC hall of fame."
They say diversity means less white people, but in Rock n Roll it means less white men.
Merely enunciating verbally . . .
The critics never liked Grand Funk - they hated them, in fact - and so they'll never get in.
Nobody beats George Michael
He certainly has a huge amount of fans like you. I think he was very talented as well.
There must be enough people watching these ceremonies to keep them being made. People need to turn away to effect change.
Love your passion - thanks so much. I feel your pain too.
WMMS certainly one of the most famous rock stations ever I think in Cleveland because of Alan Freed who coined Rock and Roll.
Yes. Popular music Hall of fame.
Agree. Humble Pie and Steve Marriott one of the greatest guitarists and vocalists of all time. Great body of work. Highly influential.

What about foghat
I like Foghat. I think they’re good. To me not Hall of Fame worthy but I enjoy them.
@@TheAlanRosenbergShow agree. Nom Morello to the Rock Hall it is another story
Agree 100%. Jethro Tull NOT in the Hall of Fame (or Shame as I like to call it), is the main reason I won't go nowhere near the place.
Yes #1 snub to me
I agree with Jethro Tull, Even Boston and a few other you mentioned.
@The Alan Rosenberg Show knowing The Eagles are in the rrhof I'm Not sure about Linda Ronstadt. So a few poco members are already in it.
Right on, right on, right on.
It is suppose to be the "Rock and Roll" hall of fame. They are clueless.
If only a TV show like 'Stranger Things' would use a song from a band like Family!
I've never watched the show, but of course I know it brought Kate Bush into the US consciousness now. Could they do it with Family....wow....we will see.
Music should just exist as an ever-expanding universe of creative sounds, and nothing more. It is not to be gatekept-it is to be observed.
How about The Music Hall of Fame with distinctive categories of music.
Yes - surely heading that way, though I would add Popular Music Hall Of Fame.

It’s so blatant about a big show and ratings and popularity. For the larger population Rock has largely died caused by theses same institutions including radio. It’s sad and I wish I had an answer
@@TheAlanRosenbergShow people are told Rock is dead and they follow what they are told. Just as those poor shmucks who were told to throw away their vinyl and cd collections (I never did, but you know, never got married either so you never know what I’d done if I did). I had people and dates seeing my record collection and litterally look at me like I was clubbing seal puppies. People were also told that we only need one brewery and one beer for the whole Planet. We finally pushed back on that, maybe we should have an intervention were people got «lured» to venues with rock being played so they would go «Hey, I was told this was dead!?!»
@@MortenAastad It really is an amazing thing. Rock still sells concert tickets but most of the audience simply wants the handful of hits they know from them listening to classic rock radio that feeds them those same songs. It's astonishing that new rock releases from the biggest artists (Stones, Who, Springsteen, etc) can't get airplay, so don't sell many records except to diehards like you and me, and the "fans" largely don't have an interest. Now it's spread to Grammys and R&R Hall of Fame over the decade..
@@TheAlanRosenbergShow That is so true and where do they expect new artists to come from when the giants die? No ones broken through playing guitars since Arctic Monkeys, and they had to use My Space to get heard. @@MortenAastad so true. The stars of today lip sync. Don’t even have live musicians. And the crazy thing is no one cares. Even the award shows don’t care. It’s astonishing. Missy Elliot really? I remember her being extremely popular back in 2005-2008 when I listened to a lot of rap and hip how and she had no rock n roll in her at all. She was a fast paced rapper mainly. Good stuff. Kate Bush around that time too. Her first album was 1978 with the great song Wuthering Heights. Hounds of Love with "Running Up That Hill" which hit number 1 in the US because of that TV show last year actually came out in 1985. Around that same time frame as many in your list.
1) Warren Zevon…nuff said, don’t blame me, go ask Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, The Eagles, Jackson Browne, Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Nicks, Linda Ronstadt, Dwight Yoakim, David Gilmour, Jerry Garcia….
I'm a big fan of his. I just think that many of the artists I showed in my video should get in before him.
@@TheAlanRosenbergShow Stranger Things took Running up the Hill on top of the charts, i believe is a remix of the song. Cyndi also been doing huge arenas since her first release until her third album with tours around countries around 1990-1991. Nothing against Kate Bush, like i said, she is original & unique. No problem if she gets inducted, but not before Cyndi Lauper. My opinion, enjoyable video clip!
I didn't realize that Cyndi Lauper still had such a large and faithful following. I pretty much stopped listening to her after True Colors. She certainly hasn't had any "big" hits in the US since then with her albums. She certainly expanded to other areas like TV, Broadway and TV commercials.

R&RHOF is meaningless and not worth ever having a conversation about.
Rona, your facts and opinions on this subject matter are truly phenomenal. I couldn't have said that better even if I tried.
@@tarrtruck2869 agreed
@@tarrtruck2869 Thank you so much, Tarr Truck! Having read your comments on Alan’s many and varied videos, I think you could have said it beautifully.
@@glendepietro1521 Yea I guess so. sad though
Who? The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? What is that? Never heard of it
It is a place that probably was created and built with good intentions that completely lost the plot.
I mean George Michael? cmon... pop
Shery Crow - yes, I would agree she should be there.
One swallow doesn't make a summer
That’s a cool saying. Poetic. I’ve never heard that before. Thanks
@@AlexRodriguez-qg3rz I guess we'll see what happens. She is a terrific performer for sure. Love your passion for her. It's great. Thanks again.
Sorry, I disagree with you Sheryl Crow should NOT have gotten in the Music Hall of fame, IRON MAIDEN should have, and SOUNDGARDEN too
@@TheAlanRosenbergShow yes react to Pachel bell rant. You will see what I mean.
Billy Joel was pushing for Joe Cocker!
From what I've heard he was pushing for Warren Zevon. But I could be wrong - I heard it from other sources but could be wrong.
And ain't it high time we went and made sure that Joe gets in?
@@stevenmaginnis1965 certainly a legend. Woodstock performance alone. Mad dogs and Englishmen. His career obviously ups and downs but no argument from me.
Others that should be in... how about Robin Trower, Rory Gallagher.
yea - the list can go on and on - I"m a fan of both for sure.
Cher? If the others are in then Cher certainly has to be in. Maybe she’s already in? Good one. Thanks.
Thanks
..And i'm still waiting for the day Black Sabbath gets into the Hip Hop Hall of Fame for some Diversity Shit?
lol...ok - that's funny
The Guess Who, Thin Lizzy
For what it's worth, I MUCH prefer kansas over Rush.
Missy Eliot seriously ?
I hear you. I couldn’t tell you one of her songs.
White Stripes should get in on the first ballot.
Will be interesting to see if they get in. Certainly Jack White and The White Stripes are one of the most unique and most respected and successful bands of the last couple of decades. I actually visited Third Man Records in person and was amazing. We'll see what happens.
The Guess Who
Yea - many love them and they had some big years.
