    For what it's worth to mention ... bearing in mind (pardon the pun) the resistance shown @ 4:40 whether from this reason or just over tightening is indicative to creating heat in the bearing & will send the bearing to an early death & may cause issues with grease & surrounding components also ... excellent vids Shane ... I hope you are being rewarded for the time & effort it takes to create these uploads ... cheers mate ...

    mint, this video helped me fix my 77 sportster with a rear disc upgrade, got all new spacers axle and bearings and asembled it all but there was play in the wheel, figured out my middle spacer was a bit too long from this video, thankfully i have a lathe and i shaved it down a bit and fixed the spacing between the bearings, thanks

    Thanks Shane. I think this is something for me to look at. My bike has good wheel bearings on the rear wheel (belt). Tire rotates ok with little torque, but when fully installed, the bike makes whoo.. whoo.. whoo sounds after a few blocks of riding (not the belt tension nor sticky break pads - I checked) and mostly heard when running the bike at 10 to 15 miles an hour. I think I will take it apart again, order the middle spacer and replace it. Will check the wheel fully torqued before I replace it thought to make sure that is it. This has been driving me crazy since I bought the bike a year ago. :-)

    Always keep an eye on parts as you clean them - best way to catch any unexpected abnormality (tangible/intangable). Calipers, dial gauges, etc- great methods of confirming spec, only good though if your eyes catch scrape marks (example) during 5s. Really enjoy your videos Mr. Conley!

    Excellent, professional tutorial!
    I've trained many aircraft maintainers and ya did a good job. I'll cite the two vids as reference for others.
    What's shown here applies to tapered roller bearings in general. For specifics the bearing manufacturer sites go into much more detail not required to R&I parts but worth a read for gearheads. You can never study too much.

    very well explained . people don't understand how important wheel spacer condition is . I once had to cut the rear wheel out of an r1 yamaha because the guy had powder coated his wheel and put a new bearing on top the fresh paint without cleaning back to bare metal first. so when it was time to tighten the wheel spindle, there was play in the wheel . then, instead of investigating why he kept winding the nut tight . the spindle on the r1 is hollow, so as he tighten'd the nut, the spindle became out of shape and caused high spots . these high spots then stopped the spindle from moving. I had to cut the rear caliper carrier off the spindle then use a power saw to cut the spindle in two at the sprocket carrier side . what a fecking nightmare this job was. I thought to begin with it was seized so could only use live steam . anyway, while all this was going on, his mate (another r1) was riding round with crushed rear wheel barings. he had taken his wheel out to change a tyre and lost the alloy spacer that sits in the centre of the wheel. he tighten'd the spindle nut without the spacer and burst the baring on the caliper side . both bikes ended up having new spacers, barings, spindles etc. it cost them a small fortune. be careful with powerful high speed bikes ! if your not sure, don't touch

    TQ wrenches are only to be used for tightening or drag. Never loosen hardware with one. On aircraft we set them to tight then break the switch off.
    Just a point. Shane I have watched your videos for years and I will say that you are a number one mechanic. If you fixed things that fly I would do some traffic patterns.

    Do you have any videos showing the race removal / instillation on this type of tapered bearing? I'm doing a 1983 XL with 3/4 tapered timken bearings. I have found zero videos showing the correct way to do it. I have bought some tools and plan on heating the hub to ease the process and freezing the races when installing. But I would love to see a professional like yourself show the process of using proper tech and tools removing/ installing the races and bearings.
    thank you. Your lessons are the best.

    Yes they will bind as you say,However they will also bind because they are not greased and a taper brg has to be rotated during the torque down or binding will happen wouldent you agree.Yes the spacer must be true both sides.

    I got a replacement tube and had it machined down to proper length . Now I have .05 end play . Question is what do the flanges or deflectors do on the old bearing spacer tube as the new tube came with out any and is 1 inch outside diameter where as the old was slightly smaller ? Are they necessary ?

    AT 2:30 just put a 90 deg small carpenter square on that pipe and check it, if needed: dress it square by kissing it lightly with a 90 DEG table sander...

  • @popitn2nd
    @popitn2nd 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hey once the bearings are properly torque, the hollow pipe that is sandwich in there should spin along with the bearings when the wheel is spinning right?

    • @rackbites
      @rackbites 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope, it's sandwiched on the inner race, that sits still, outer race goes around.

  • @llewvirtue861
    @llewvirtue861 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    This principal is most affected on tapered roller bearings, that are torqued to a pre-load.
    This is not so drastically effected on ball bearings to such a degree.
    The spacer on balls bearings is not part of the pre-load, the bearings bottom on a lip and can go down no further

    • @How2Wrench
      @How2Wrench  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right on. Did you see our videos on ball bearings? This video is for tapered Timken...

    I have an abs light on my 2010 Limited FLHTK. I have changed the rear and front wheel bearings and abs wheel sensors, but still have abs light. Any scanner tool you recommend for me to buy to figure out why I have abs light ?? Thanks for any help

      Mostly need to have the module reset by a dealer. Shouldn't be to much since its simply a hook and set/clear. I'm not aware of anything affordable.

      Scan tools only pick up information the sensor sends. Don't just replace a sensor because the scan tool mentions it. It just means something in that area. You need to verify the sensor is bad. Never just throw parts at a problem. You'll never know what fixes it. Plus, you won't learn much either.

      Let me try and see I can catch Shane to answer quick. (FYI. He answers channel members questions daily...best $1.99 you'll ever spend)
      He is just returning from an extended stay in Japan training students this winter. You can imagine how full his inbox is. We are just the social media team.
      Due to his limited bandwidth on time and demand for help, we had to choose to forward any requests from members first and it is only $1.99 a month to join. All member tech questions like this get directly forwarded to him every day! Be mindful and honest that this is for "quick questions" that would serve you answers that can clearly be addressed. If it's a diagnosis need you'll need to use the one-on-one service.

      Yo...we just run this page. He’s gets hundreds a requests a week and sorry we have just made it yours. As much as he would like to drop wrenches and answer all requests, he has to service customers in the shop and Techline/channel members first. He answers questions on his techline service within 24 hours and it gets you his personal cell (his preferred method) Go to www.how2wrench.com for the links.
      Sorry we don't have quick answer!
