  • Hobonichi and I broke up and it's time for me to return to my first true love - the traveler's notebook system. In this video, I will be gently ranting about my planner regret, sharing why I'm leaving my hobonichi cousin and discussing what I'll be using for the rest of the year from Baum-Kuchen.

    I actually went through something similar, only the paper made me realize I wasn't as in love with the gel pens I was using as I thought, so I was trying a bunch of different ones out and that's how I found the Uniball One. I never thought I'd be okay with anything less than 1.0 but now I'm living that 0.7 life and loving it! Also UniOne black makes every other black look gray, it's actually mind-blowing how matte and velvety it looks on the paper. Anyway, sorry for the ramble, thanks for sharing!! 🫶

    Thank you for this video! I thought it was me and a change in how I was using my Hobonichi but you are so very right...I also tried the original Tomoe River paper and its so much smoother. I will probably stick with mine this year as I have at least 3 planners on the go with various other paper. I am excited to see how your new system evolves. Love your new custom design by Baum Kuchen. Sweet Blessings Mand XOXO

      I thought the same too! That or I was just being picky, but no the paper is completely different. I wish they called it something else, I feel like the paper is its own type. I’m happy you have other planners to play with. I think It wouldn’t have affected me as much if i had others, but of course I just HAD to make my hobonichi my all-in-one this year😅

    And omg, this personalization is so cute ❤ i love it ! (and i love this tealish blue, mine is a similar lighter hue, and i was so worried when i purchased it online, because i had read so many people being disappointed by the blue hue 😅 i ended up really loving mine, fortunately!)

      Thank you! This tn is my baby! We are definitely the lucky ones! Everyone always tells me how much they hate their almost black navy blue tns 😅 I can't relate. I purchased this one in person and was so nervous the long drive home! I didn't expect it to be this pretty blue color, I feel like it lightens more and more with age too, while my other tns tend to get darker with time

      @@FrenchyInFocus mine behave just the same! That's so pretty! (i have a darker blue too, it's the yudo limited edition, it also lighten with being used, and i quite like the navy blue with its silver accents!) i purchased mine online, so i was sooooo worried about it, i was super relieved while opening it 😅❤

    I, too, am experienced the same thing with my Hichi cousin. I’m very disappointed in it this year my pens are doing the same exact thing as what you saying you know they made a change and I don’t believe the change was a good change and I think that possibly their mouth while it might take a hit for their price But I’m going to a different type of planner as well and journal combined. I’m thinking about trying the other some out there that have the 52 GSM Tommo, river paper. I know they will work as proven. I hope you find your niche back in your standard notebook and love every moment of it. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and you help me speak up about my issue as well. Thank you.

    I like the sanzen paper with calligraphy nibs, but i agree that for finer nibs it doesn't work that well. I was lucky enough to not have any bleeding though, but i ended abandoning the hobonichi too at the end of January =/ especially as i had the most bizarre thing with one of my fav inks (the nude by J Herbin, a really cute peach color) that took a blueish undertone on this paper! I was like ".... What? 😂"
    i'm so sad, because it was my first one, and i was really hyped about it 😅 (so i went back to my TN, and then found your video, it actually soothed me a bit!)
    Can't wait to see more of your TNs ❤

    • @FrenchyInFocus
      @FrenchyInFocus  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh yeah I forgot to mention that one! Some of my fave inks are a totally different color too on this paper. I was super hype about being back in a system that worked so well! I had it last year and fell head over heels! But you know something, I feel so comfy in my tn. I even took it out with me and was able to just journal on my lap and it felt so right. I hated taking the hobonichi around, it was so heavy and too big to journal comfortably without a desk or table. I'm happy this video gave you some comfort, I was so upset when I realized this just wasn't working. I feel like I went through the grief stages, in denial that the paper was that bad, forcing it to work with what I had and then finally accepting it. 😂 I am definitely happier with out it ❤

      @@FrenchyInFocus i totally get it! I wanted to love it, but i actually was a bit disappointed, and went through grief stage! I soothed my ruffled feathers by making a couple of Tn inserts with what remained o my stock of old tomoe river paper! So i can enjoy the feel of this paper a bit longer for my everyday life 😅 i'll look into a new paper alternative when i'll be done with these inserts!

    Im so glad Im not going insane. Im in a hobonichi group and alot of ppl don’t have issues with the new paper but I am left and right. Still in my hobo till I figure out what to use. No idea what to use. I love the hobo cuz planner and journal in one.

    • @FrenchyInFocus
      @FrenchyInFocus  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Same! I think it depends if you’re using gel pens instead of fountain pens? Or maybe there are some bad batches around? My hobonichi ended up being my all in one last year and I loved it so much! I was so excited to do the same this year, but the paper was too much to deal with. I rather take my loss both financially and the month of January than stay in it for the rest of the year. Most of the pages were ruined anyway by the feathering, bleed through and different colors on some pages trying to figure out the best inks to use. I wish there was another alternative. The best I could think of is my tn, I can at least put three inserts, a monthly, weekly and daily. Close enough 😅

    Aww Paris, I’m sorry the sanzen paper isn’t meeting your needs. I’ve only tried the regular trp for one year so I didn’t really have an attachment to it, but I can see that the sanzen doesn’t show when or shading as well. But I love love love your green TN cover. Something about TNs I just love them so much but I can stand the creases in the center that don’t lay flat lol. If not for that I’d probably only use TNs haha!

    I really appreciate your thoughts on the Hobonichi. I held off for years from purchasing one (I'm a devoted TN person) but gave in last night for a day-free to use as a daily creative prompt journal. Sigh. Something new.

    • @FrenchyInFocus
      @FrenchyInFocus  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey, you still might love the day-free! You won’t know until you try it for yourself ☺️
      I was strictly a TN person too, for years! I tried Hobonichi last year, when they had the old TRP paper and just fell in love with the layout, plus the paper was so nice to use with fountain pens. Naturally I purchased this year’s without any hesitation,but, alas I not thinking about the paper change nor did I think Sanzen paper would be such a deal breaker for me! 😔 It’s still good paper if you use document inks or just gel pens, but that’s not my thing - I want color! At the moment, I feel at home in my TN and honestly feel quite foolish for ever leaving😅 This system is so perfect and you could totally recreate the hobonichi format (monthly, weekly vertical and daily pages) if you truly wanted to or just create your own. The possibilities are endless 🤍

      @@FrenchyInFocus I've resigned myself to the fact that I'll only be using gel pens, and I'm ok with it. I think. But you can say you've tried and it didn't work; no more wondering. That's where I'm at. If it doesn't work for me I can easily incorporate my idea into a TN. I won't beat myself up for not finishing the book. 🥰😀

  • @LittleCocoStudio
    @LittleCocoStudio 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    That's so disappointing that the Sanzen paper took away your joy from using your Cousin. I can understand your desire to change to something else if you're not able to use your fountain pens and inks freely in the book, especially if you know you used to be able to do that. I'm so excited to see your new set-ups! I'm sticking with Hobonichi this year, but I have such a soft spot for my TNs and love watching how others use them. I would love to send one of my TN covers to BK one day to have them customize it. Yours is so beautiful and I would want to get that brown leather card slot as well!

    • @FrenchyInFocus
      @FrenchyInFocus  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment🤍 I’m happy the hobonichi paper change hasn’t affected you, It almost feels like I need to mourn this loss. The system worked so well for me. I wonder if there are just bad batches around or perhaps I’m just super sensitive to textures. Who would’ve thought something so small as a paper change could shift a beloved activity into a chore, something I dreaded. I am a person who journals in small bursts throughout the day - moments of stillness. I found myself not wanting to pick up my journal until very end of the day and that’s only because I hate the idea of a blank page plus I know my mind would be too cluttered to fall asleep. Missing out on my mini journaling breaks, made me feel either more stress throughout the day or just stuck without having the capacity to deal with my daily tasks. I feel awful for wasting paper! I’m sure I could repurpose, but I really wanted to be mindful of my purchases this year which is why I had everything in one place with the hobonichi. I can’t help but feel a little disappointed in myself for not making the right choice in the first place.
      I am excited that I get to use my favorite cover and have a more portable system me vs keeping my cousin at home. That card pocket is quite handy too, even if it’s for washi tape and stickers. I already used this tn as a wallet so it’s almost a win/win situation.

    • @LittleCocoStudio

      @@FrenchyInFocus your journal is supposed to be a safe space that you look forward to come to every day! It would hard to spend an entire year using something that didn’t feel right. It sounds like you put a lot of thought into this decision after trying for a while to make your previous system work. Maybe in the future, you can repurpose the pages, if that’s what you want to do. And, it doesn’t have to be this year. ☺️ When I got my first TN, I went a little crazy buying allll the inserts because I didn’t know what I wanted. 🤭 Many of them sat untouched for years, and it’s only now that I’m finally finding uses for them. I hope your new system brings you daily joy. I can’t wait to see it!! 😍💗

      I didn’t think about that! I imagine it’s a little annoying having to re-date everything but at least you have the good paper 😍 I feel like the new hobonichis are great for folks using gel pens, the dry time is a bit faster and you don’t really notice the rougher texture, but I’m a fountain pen girl through and through

    I can totally relate to what you are saying- the paper is different, and wow the prices of the hobo's went up this year too. I had such a hard time during planner season trying to decide between TN and Hobonichi. I was really leaning into the TN, but had a good time with Hobo and decided to just go with it since I already had multiple covers. My mistake lol
