    Even if Phillip Carlyle and Anne Wheeler are both fictional nothing will ever stop me from loving Zac Efron's and Zendaya's portrayals of them.

      YES, someone who finally gets it! Rebecca you are wonderful! I LOVED the movie, the multiple Love stories - Zendaya and Zac were awesome and there was a little subplot of EQUALITY. He is a handsome young Rich White Guy, chained by his family into being something he hates and She is a Beautiful young woman who is of mixed parentage (and maybe doesn't even know who one or both of her parents were), she is street smart, maybe had to...do things to survive, is looked down on by society & so on. Their love story has so many levels and sub stories. I LOVED it. Cheers Rebecca!

    I still love the Greatest Showman movie, but I do appreciate this video as I did some of my own research and found out a lot of these facts myself. I too was a bit upset about the portrayal of Jenny Lind, but I'm sadly used to Hollywood altering history for theatrical purposes.

    I love discussions about Barnum because he is not as black and white as people think, nor as black and white as people think things were in that time period.
    He started off exploiting an elderly slave, however he later voted to amend the Constitution with the Thirteenth Amendment.
    He tricked and hoaxed people, lied to them, but he entertained them. Even when his lies were revealed, many people didn’t hate him for it, because he gave them entertainment. The same way we know movies aren’t real, but we enjoy them anyway. Barnum was very much “the ends justify the means” type of guy.
    He may have “exploited” many different groups of people in his freakshows, though exploit is a strong word, but he made them extremely wealthy. Charles Stratton for example had enough wealth that by the time he was an adult, he could retire live out the rest of his life in wealth. Barnum and the workers greatly benefitted and were able to meet people just like them, such as Stratton who met his wife while touring.
    Ultimately, Barnum did quite a bit of bad, but he ultimately made up for it with the good he did and the wonder he brought to people.

    Very interesting. Whenever I see a movie I know its based on an actual story vs fiction I keep in mind that it's not necessarily going to be factually accurate and that's ok. I wouldn't change a thing about this movie but appreciate the info provided. Where I live we have Ringling brothers plus the museum home school etc. Even clown school in the town south of us. Love the circus but the back stories aren't the nicest. But one of my favorite movies that puts a gigantic smile on my face every time along with the message that different is NOT BAD. One of the best scenes is the lady who gives him the apple. All I see is the most beautiful and kindest eyes. Thanks for the info.

    • @lorrainegrey9120
      @lorrainegrey9120 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of course, a sequel would have to deal with the fact that he was in England when Charity had her final illness and death, and did not come home until after he married the 24-year-old daughter of his host, when PTB was 64 himself. Try explaining that to one's 3 adult daughters who had soldiered on, helping and then burying their mother, and were all older than their stepmother.

Movies, whether based on books or history, should be accurate in their portrayal to the audience or it gives a false impression of what truly happened. Still, the message is powerful, and timeless...there should be no hate because of differences.

      I guess your parents didn't teach you much about art and musicals. I'll be blunt....Good luck finding a Musical that is historically accurate. Sound of Music, Phantom of the Opera, Hamilton, etc; none of them are historically accurate. Musicals are whimsical by nature. The job of the art is to invoke different levels of emotional expression through music, dance, and singing. History is just the foundation or setting that inspires the art. If you want history, rear a book or watch a documentary. This is why I laugh at people who call themselves profession film critics and criticize musicals for lacking realism. It shows how little they understand about anything regarding film. Notice: No critic complains about the inaccuracies of a stage musicals (like Phantom of the Opera). Just because we shot it on celluloid, doesn't change the point of the art.

I bought one of the last traveling sideshows (complete with a feejee mermaid and two-headed pig) and people LOVE it. They know it's all fake, but so is WWE and cartoons for God's sake. And yes, if it weren't for Barnum, many of his "freaks" would have been panhandling in the streets or living in squalor instead of buying mansions and owning racehorses. Unfortunately, that was the only place many of the more obvious different-looking and abled people could make something like a decent living. It DID apparently forge a sense of community amongst themselves-- There is that town in Florida where the circus used to shut down in the winter, where many of the performers had a close-knit neighborhood. Perhaps not as much now, since the circus itself has closed shop, but the survivors do still live in the area.

    Freak shows no matter what are unjustifiable. They should've renamed Hugh Jackman's character, instead of keeping him based off a man who exploited animals, and people with differencies that made society reject them. For the character he is based off, I'll never watch the greatest showman.

    Did people forget this is a musical? Good luck finding a Musical that is historically accurate. Is Hamilton, Sound of Music or Phantom of the Opera historically accurate? NOPE! Musicals are meant to be whimsical and crafty by nature. History becomes the foundation or setting for the art. If people want historical accuracy, go read a book or watch a documentary. Irony that nobody makes this complaint if Greatest Showman was just a stage play. But because it was shot on celluloid, historical accuracy is suddenly a factor? Uh? No!

    Look I'm all for excellent Musicals but PT Barnum is not a good person. They could have easily made this about a fantastical circus. PT Barnum is a bastard and deserves to be remembered as such.

    I get so annoyed when my high school would play the song of the film. Like the film representing people ahead of their time. Clown world we are certainly in.
