Philip married four times. First to Maria Manuela of Portugal who died at childbirth age 17. Her son Carlos was considered 'insane'. He blinded the horses in the stables, terrorised his servants and even attempted to kill his father and hid uncle John.
He married Mary Tudor second who he didnt really love. Mary died childless age 42.
His third wife was Elisabeth of Valois daughter of Catherine de Medici. Elisabeth miscarried twins and a son before giving birth to Isabella and Catherine Michelle. Elisabeth died aged 23.
His fourth and last wife was Anne of Austria. Anne's children all died young except for Philip (Future Philip III). Anne died aged 30.
Philip outlived all his wives and most of his children

1:36 "At your age, I hadn't fallen in love yet" - it's really interesting hearing Carlos saying that and, in turn, dismissing his relationships and dalliances before his marriage as infatuations that were never real love. I can only assume that this is how he felt about them in reality after he and Isabel found each other and how he remembered them in his later years. It certainly shows how he became wiser when he fell in love with Isabel; clearly, she and their love made him a better man.
As for Felipe, I can certainly believe that he wanted what his mother and father shared and even though the path to true love wasn't entirely smooth for him, at least in the end, he found it.

I also found this line very interesting, especially considering his teenage love for Germaine. The way he used to feel about Germaine made him do so risky and foolish things in the past, and yet later as an elder man he didn't consider it love.

Well even teenagers can confuse love with infatuation or lust and with age comes wisdom. And to be fair, anybody can go through something like this, especially at a young age - at the time, they think it's real or true love, but then after parting ways, they grow up, they move on and eventually, they fall deeply in love with somebody else and they realise now that they have found real love, especially if that love never dies. And when they look back at their past relationship, they feel it wasn't real love because, in Carlos's case, he never fell in love with anybody else the way he fell in love with Isabel, nor did he ever feel for anybody else what he felt for her, including Germaine. Maybe this was also the series showing that Carlos lived to regret those relationships because he wished he'd married Isabel sooner...?

In my own words, in his youth, Carlos was a Romeo looking for his Juliet; he just didn't realise for a while that he was looking in all the wrong places for her. :)

Yes, teenagers really often confuse these things. It also happens very often that that when someone is older they doesn't consider their previous loves/infatuations love anymore, especially after finding the right one to spend their lives with.
I also think that Charles's relationship with Germaine was very much because of a "mother complex" he had, after having to grow up without a mother. It also happens to young girls for example who their father left when they were little, that later the girls look for a man much older than themselves.

Yes I think that's probably exactly what drew Carlos to Germaine, the fact that he had grown up without a mother and she being older certainly played a part in the whole thing. If she had been the same age as him, it very likely wouldn't have been the same or nothing would've happened between them. And it seems to have been in the same case of Felipe's affair with Isabel de Osorio because the circumstances were very similar - Felipe also grew up without his mother after losing her when he was 12, his father was mostly absent and he, too, was drawn to an older woman. So yes I think you're absolutely spot on with the "mother complex" issue.

For me, It's hard to believe that Carlos in his first meeting with Isabella before their wedding ceremony and the old and tired Carlos in the clip above were actually played by the same actor. Alvaro Cervantes really looks like fifties, completely exhausted in this clip. I'm wondering what this talented actor is doing now.

Yes, not ot mention the teenager Carlos in episode 1. The actor and those who worked on the makeup to make him look older did a wonderful job.

JY L I agree. The way they did the costumes and make up on their actors here especially on Alvaro is amazing. How could they make him look so young and so old in one series???

HS The Mary who Philip wants to marry is daughter of his aunt Eleanor of Austria. Eleanor gave birth to her when she was the Dowager Queen of Portugal and young widow of King Manuel the Fortunate (Philip's maternal grandfather). So Mary can be considered to be both Philip's cousin (paternal) and aunt (maternal). However, in this series, it is indicated that Mary is the daughter of Eleanor and King John III of Portugal (King Manuel's son and successor) because they started a relationship after King Manuel's death. In that case, Mary would be Philip's cousin (both paternal and maternal)

@@ChiNguyen-td6pk That storyline in the show is fictional. In real life, Maria was born when her father Manuel was still alive and there was no affair between John and Eleanor.
