  • Soundlink III full review: oluvsgadgets.blogspot.com/2014...
    Please note that although I tried my best this video can only be a rough representation of how the speakers sound relatively one to each other, depending on the quality of the recording microphone and on the speakers or headphones used for playback. You need to listen to a speaker on your own to really get the best idea of how it sounds in real life.
    There is a definite improvement in sound between the Soundlink III and the previous models but as a matter of taste some recordings might even sound better on the old versions, in fact the differences between all 3 models are overall rather marginal and best noticable when compared directly.
    All speakers were recorded standing free on a table with volume set to 50% for the first recording part and standing in a shelf near a back wall with volume set to 100% for the second part.
    Audio recorded with Zoom H1

    Being that most sound is subjective, all i can say is that i have always found that the older versions of products last longer and dont contain as many build shortcuts as newer products... as an example, i have has my Version 1 Soundlink since its introduction in 2011, and it has performed flawlessly , usually in the florida heat outside by the pool.... its a great product and i plan to be buried with it.

    Awesome comparison!! Great work!! This lets us all know that the only real reason to run out and buy the latest and greatest soundlink, (for those of us who have working previous versions), is because the older version is no longer available for purchase or because we didn't own one to begin with.... They all sound great and the minor differences between them is not going to bother me while I'm cleaning the kitchen, washing the car or cutting wood in the garage. Just my 2 cents..

    • @oluvsgadgets

      true to some degree, and probably only a different tuning of the DSP.
      but the new one sounds considerably better when listened at low levels, the old ones sounded too boomy and muffled. I really liked the III most of all of them, but as I own the mini i kept this because of portability, for home use i have other systems.

    To me the SoundLink 1 seems to have the best / warm sound with the most Bass and nicely balanced EQ settings. SoundLink 3 sounds weirdly with too much high frequencies and it seems to have some effect on in like a 3D wide-stereo sound. Anyways... I am happy with my SoundLink 1 :)

  • @jakeivey8877

    Thanks for doing this. I was set to go with the II, but the III seems to have more mid-to-treble, hence more clarity. Bose only gives you one way to go, which is too bad, so getting it right is important.
    Thanks again.

    Recently my wife gave me a Bose Soundlink II, which was a bonus from her iPhone lease. I've always been a JBL-HK fan. But this little sucker--the Bose Soundlink II--brought out things I'd never heard before. It's as if Bose has "tuned" these things to bring out the right frequencies, in the process muting some of the others to reduce tonal color clashing or over-saturation. The human voice was so clear I abandoned all captions, and the sounds of footsteps or lighting a match were almost "overly clear." Bass was so noticeable that the use of a subwoofer (which I have) was nullified. Now I understand the fuss about Bose. As a complement to television drama and movies, it's-top notch. It's a relatively "inefficient" speaker, so the more clean watts you have the better, The included amp seems a perfect power-mate for it.
    II vs. III. I'm certainly not hearing a $100 difference(on my Wharfdale Advanced bookshelf speakers). III is a bit more aggressive, maybe louder and wider, but that doesn't prove anything. I usually listen to solo piano--jazz or classical. I know how it should sound. The speaker that best represents it gets my vote. (But use the right audio source. All of those old Rudy Van Gelder recordings for the Blue Note label (I have hundreds) distort the natural sounds of the piano in order to bring out each instrument equally clearly. It's OK for Horace Silver, but it wrecks Bill Evans' touch and sound. Instead, use Mile Davis' "Kind of Blue," (on Columbia-Sony), which starts with acoustic bass, then piano, then ride cymbal. Even before Miles' first note, that tells you all you need to know.

    Soundlink I(very congested, boomy, lacking medium and highs)
    Soundlink II(Less congested, little boomy, lacking extension on the highs)
    Soundlink III(Less congested than the II, less boomy than the II, seems that it lost extension on the bass)
    Soundlink III seems to have better overall sound quality of the 3.

  • @ashbydav

    III sounds more clear but to focused on the highs and sounds less natural, more metallic sounding to me . I prefer the sound of II plus it looks better. Thanks allot for the demo mate, appreciated

      ***** The three shows more range in the mids, something which Bose isn't known for. how do you even know how the lows sound like from this video?

    • @stuie66
      @stuie66 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your right you definately can hear the differences between the three. I read a review that said the third versions highs were not as pronounced as the second version. But after listening to this a few times it does sound like the 3rd version is very pronounced on the highs.

    • @pilgrim5355
      @pilgrim5355 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No doubt the III is louder in the mid - highs. I got the SLII and i prefer the more pronounced lows to the highs. The II has a nice sound overall and the mids - highs ain't that bad. I think the II has better balance.

    I own a Soundlink 2. The Soundlink 2 definitely an improvement over the Soundlink 1. Soundlink 3 is even further refined (and louder), but I don't think it's sound is better than Soundlink 2. Plus, Soundlink 2 (like Soundlink 1) has a very functional, protective cover that the Soundlink 3 doesn't. SUMMARY: I think Soundlink 2 is best overall. If you have Soundlink 2, I don't see a need to upgrade to Soundlink 3. At the right/fair price, you can't go wrong with 1, 2 or 3.

    • @drakune
      @drakune 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with your opinion. I currently have both Soundlink 1 and 2 in my posession and I have been considering of getting 3, but declined to do so after test-listening 3 at the bose store near by. The artificial quality of sound might have improved but the 'feeling' of the sound seems to be missing something inside for 3.

    • @muzikmon2267
      @muzikmon2267 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As an audio file and a sound engineer and owning the SoundLink 2. it's only good at low volumes as soon as you try to get it up in volume.. there's a flubbyness to the bass..
      Is also overall compression as you turn it up past halfway..
      I think the SoundLink 3 is a huge improvement in Dynamics, and sound quality giving you more. Frequency response in a natural sound..
      I just purchased the JBL XTREME 2 WHICH I THINK BEATS ALL OF THESE IN TERMS OF ACCURACY, LOUDNESS, AND SOUND QUALITY..
      Taboot I only got it for 200..
      Not to mention in the studio the JBL Xtreme 2 has the widest flattest frequency response.
      You would think the base in the extreme 2 would be overly boomy bass because of its aggressive-looking profile.. BUT IT'S JUST THE OPPOSITE.. the bass is exactly the way it is supposed to sound!!! It's all there but accurate..
      Not to mention with the connect + you can attach other jbl's to it wirelessly..

      muzikmon2267 , Phile, I considered myself to be once. I owned both II and III, and under the same conditions, II blows III away.
      II is very picky with placement, but once you find that sweet spot the II outperforms the III hands down.
      Interestingly enough, a good friend of mine owns a later production II and his plays louder, without the spatial imaging, though.
      They are quite different from each other: Mine says patent pending and his has patent on it, BUT, the angle of placement in open resting form is more acute in mine, by several degrees

    Thanks for the video- and the sounds.- its a great comparison. For me the II sounds just right- someone mentioned the III is a bit to clean - and almost seems less bass.
    However- with the III they also focused on battery live and more then doubled it.

    • @oluvsgadgets
      @oluvsgadgets  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glen Pereira I would also say that III is their best version yet. But meanwhile there are some better alternatives from other companies, so I wouldn't consider it anymore.

  • @mikejohnson1228
    @mikejohnson1228 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    sensational comparison, but I have to ask... If I'm playing this audio over my current SoundLink I, will this video make my Soundlink I sound worse? Is it audio cannibalism?
    I can hear a noticible difference for sure between all three models, so when it gets to SoundLink III i can definitely hear the highs and mis.
    so if I can hear them and see how good they sound through the SoundLink I, I assume that mean the SoundLink III is VERY bright on the actual SoundLink III. I'm thinking in person I'd prefer the SoundLink II then.

  • @pacific808

      MegaSupergo , sl III sounds as if it were playing out of a bathtub, compared to a properly placed II-downright satisfying in the right conditions. The are limits and I have purchased more expensive newer ‚audiophile‘ Avant Garde replacements, Buthelezi smaller companies have trouble offering as reliably homogenous product: Vifa Oslo, had me dancing with joy for exactly three days, and then that speaker found its way back to the shipper; it would perform consistently

  • @machwebb
    @machwebb 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Funny how subjective this can be.....for my ears the SL1 sounds more natural....SL3 loses mids and the SL2 just seems to lose bottom end and get a little wishy washy....
    I would be very careful of reviews and what people say, these speakers are very different wherever you go and even very different depending on placement in any room..
    nice vid by the way!!!

    • @oluvsgadgets
      @oluvsgadgets  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Of course they sound different wherever you put them, but in this case I tried recording them exactly in the same way so that you could hear relative differences between all of them best.
      I still think that the III sounds best, you have to hear them at different volume levels and especially the SL1 got very boomy and muffled at low levels, all of them are not really perfect at top volume but the III still manages the most convincing representation with least compression artifacts, the SL2 was worst btw.
      I also thought before about doing a video which will show how the sound changes depending on where you put the speaker, maybe I will find the time once to do this.

      Not loving the high horsey tone, kiddo.
      You don't need Beveridge Model 2 speakers to hear the difference in this audio test.
      SL3 does sound bright. SL2 fools around with the mid. SL1 seems to add nothing which is why I use it to hear TIDAL playlists at beaches and base camps.
      SL2 & SL3 are not improvements, they are steps down.
      You can hear this audio test through any old pair of speakers (including macbook pro speakers) and hear what Fernandez is pointing out because this audio test recording was objectively structured.
      So, good job on the construction of the recording.

    • @oluvsgadgets
      @oluvsgadgets  9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      No baby, MacBook speakers are colored on their own missing any real response below 200hz you are hearing not what was recorded. Use some cheap headphones but not laptop-speakers. And all you say is simply wrong. The SL1 is a muffled box without any treble above 10khz if you like it good for you but it is not what I would call a flat response.

    Hi Oluv.
    Didn't know it was you with the videos. Great job. I had written some time back that Mini does not sound that good in person and did not have the bass that your videos depict. But, I guess I was wrong. My apologies.
    The sound of the Soundlink III is more Sonos-isque now. Clearer in the upper register. Though they have sacrificed the very slightest of bass from the I & II. This comes out more clearly with the second song which starts at around 2.06 of the video.
    Could you do the same song with a comparo between the Mini and the III? Which is the better one in your opinion.
    Wish they had added true wireless bluetooth for a really great wireless, portable left right system.

    Bose were the first guys to really get deep bass from small products and started the BT craze BUT my speaker like this (Bose Soundlink Wireless - rectangular with cover/stand) actually has very bad treble. there is very little clarity from what was an expensive and premium product. its hard to understand why because getting treble was never difficult, only bass. anyone go any ways to improve treble on these speakers, maybe even add tweeters. its a great product in terms of battery, full sound, build quality, volume etc.... just that the sound quality and clarity is not there. i would love to improve it. All these minor differences are just tweaks to the DSP/EQ configs on the units. I wish that Bose just allowed you to tweak this to your personal liking instead of insisting on one single preset. There really hasn't been a reason to upgrade from the original Soundlink if you have an EQ on your Bluetooth device. I guess if you need the extra battery charge, the Soundlink III is the best bet today, but overall I'm disappointed that Bose doesn't make any effort to actually improve their speakers. I can think of a lot of things they could do with them to make them stand out against the competition:
    * USB charging
    * At least 3 selectable EQ presets
    * aspX bluetooth support
    * Play/Pause/Skip buttons
    * Replaceable battery (the III actually is a step back in that regard)
    * Differentiate the Soundlink and the Soundlink Mini more - they sound nearly identical, so what exactly are you getting for the much bigger size?

    Used the sound link 1 for 8 years.. however now the there seems to be a battery fault.. thinking of ordering a spare battery which does not guarantee it works or buying a new speaker....

    Wow, I cannot understand what everyone is hearing that I am not. I own none of these but the III sound seems much richer and rounded through my ears over the II or I. As a matter of fact, although a distinct difference between all 3, the I and II sound most similar to me.

    in a nutshell:
    3 sounds pretty clean & punchy while sounding the flattest/even, i wonder how good that boost in the highs would sound in real life though...sometimes brightness can be too harsh
    2 is the worst, it sounds muddy, distant, & is missing a chunk of lower mids for snare drum hits, no shine like in 3 either
    1 is better than 2, but is basically missing the brightness of 3

    Great comparison, thanks for the effort. Soundlink III sounds the best overall in my opinion. It would be great to hear a full orchestra playing a classical piece, or, Bach, what a musician! It's a really good test as you are able to hear the full sound spectrum. Some classic rock would be nice, too, a bit of Jimi, Led Zep ;-)

    i have my Soundlink II connected Bluetooth to my PC, there is virtually no difference in the sound. im not sure why, when connected with my PC surround system, there is only a slight difference, but not much.

    what is the title of the song ?

  • @sachininspright
    @sachininspright 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    SL I > SL II > SL III
    Note: I own II
    III might seem better to some because of its improved imaging and wider soundstage. But its tonality is not as good as the earlier two. It feels more fatiguing being treble-sharp. I has the most organic sound, but a tad mid-centric. II has better bass extension. Take your pick.

      Far bette were their micro music monitors. The Japanese version even had a battery compartment for portable use. Years prior to the Soundlinks. I always hoped Bose would release them as a TWS portable set.

    I think the sounds is only a tiny bit different. I prefer the style of the SL2. The SL3 is great enough for anyone who never have a Bose speakers.

    Cuando Bose hacia altavoces con buen diseño y calidad, ahora ese Flex y Revolve no le dan la talla a los antiguos altavoces que fabricaba Bose, una lastima que Bose haya dejado de producir estos dispositivos Soundlink iii y Soundlink mobile ii

    Is anyone else notice. The SoundLink 1 and 2 both sound like they have a cloth over the speaker..
    The sound link 3 seems to be much more natural, more dynamic, more Fidelity, and wider frequency response..
    Sounds more like expensive audiophile speakers I am very familiar with owning speakers that cost $5,000 and having my own studio being a musician and sound engineer.

    • @sachininspright
      @sachininspright 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, still there are those who prefer the Harbeths which sound woolier than the razor sharp audiophile speakers… for their more natural mids and non-fatiguing listening. SL III is clearer, but not as organic sounding as I and II.

    Der III ist neutraler. Unterschiede zwischen I und II kann ich nicht feststellen.
    Ist wohl eine Geschmackssache ob man eher mehr Bass mag (I u. II) oder es neutral mag. Würde mich wohl eher für I und II entscheiden und nach Bedarf über Equalizer den Bass runter setzen bzw. die Mitten anheben.
    Würde mich mal interessieren Mini vs. III. Habe ja selber 2 Minis.

    • @oluvsgadgets
      @oluvsgadgets  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kommt noch, keine Sorge, muss es erst fertigschneiden. Für mein Gefühl ist der Unterschied zwischen III und Mini kleiner als zu den Vorgängern, außer natürlich in der Lautstärke.

    • @oluvsgadgets
      @oluvsgadgets  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, because I don't have the Big Jambox anymore, but already the Soundlink Mini wipes the floor with it except in loudness, have a look here:
      th-cam.com/video/9hhzdGn02_g/w-d-xo.html
      The Soundlink III on the other hand can also compete loudnesswise.
