  • A few years back I decided to invest in a 3D-printer. Turns out, that it would be one of, if not the, best purchase I've ever made as a freelance 1st AC (aka Focus Puller) working in the film industry. 3D-printing for filmmaking, and specifically the camera department can be a very powerful tool. You can even 3D-print your own camera accessories.

Hell yeah. 3D printing has allowed me to create things I specifically need regardless if it's a new idea, a fix for a broken item or to replicate something else that is otherwise expensive in comparison.
For example, I had a vintage lens with a mount I did not have an adapter to. Before purchasing a high quality mount I decided to 3D print one to test the lens and see if it was worth using in the first place. I ended up liking the lens enough to get the adapter made from more durable metal but my 3D printed version was very fast way and inexpensive option for testing.

That's awesome! Did you manage to model the mount yourself? If so, that's super cool!

Awesome! You're gonna love it. You can print things like hooks to hang cables on the outside of the cart, battery holder/crate for smaller batteries and much more. Enjoy!

Yeah totally agree, although tinker cad is extremely limiting and learning something like on-shape or fusion 360 truly isn't THAT hard. Like it's less difficult than learning video editing from scratch IMO.

True, it's very easy to get into but the ceiling might not be very high. But I think it's a good way to get into it and dip your toes, it won't scare people away. If you get hooked you can transition to a more advanved CAD-program 👍

@carlscinema7086 it definitely is a straightforward way to dip your toes in, and just being able to move stuff around with your mouse is great and intuitive, especially for teaching kids about it. It's just that the moment you wanna do something more complex than "one hole in a platonic solid" the time saved/time wasted ratio compared to learning the basics of fusion 360° starts to tilt the wrong direction. It's not really that I want everyone to be 'advanced' it's that I don't think basic CAD is actually beyond most people's abilities, it's just unfamiliar and a little intimidating, and it's worth the little bit of extra time when the door it opens is big.

"One of the most satisfying aspects of 3D printing is the ability to create something out of nothing, to have something go from an idea in your head to an actual physical item that you can hold in your hand - thats pretty amazing"
In the meanwhile someone out there prints their Dwayne The Rock door knob
