Heart Tanks increase X's maximum health by 2. There is one tank in each maverick level; thus the maximum amount of health X can have in the game is 32 (16 + 8*2).
There are only two ways to get the buster upgrade. You can optain it from Zero after defeating all 8 mavericks or you can use the capsule in flame mammoth stage.

@@ejj9613 exit and play again, best way to do it is to die over and over because it will start you from a checkpoint instead making you redo the whole stage, unless you run out of lives.
For anyone wondering about the mandrill heart tank use jump (B) and dash(a)(requires boot upgrade)at the same time to get a jump boost. (I'm playing on the switch). Hope this helps.
@jackbelk I have to assume you meant charge attack, to which I have to ask how you would use the charged attack *without* the arm cannon, which allows you to charge your earned weapons.
Trying to get the arm upgrade by jumping off of that platform and using the headbutt to get through that ceiling was more than a little frustrating. I was starting to wonder if the emulation was malfunctioning. Finally did get it tho.
Very helpful now especially that the series was on special. Also you can get the Boomer Kuwanger heart tank with the charged ice shotgun if you have the arm upgrade when you take this stage on.

I could never effin' do the right timed jump to get the X-Buster upgrade in Flame Mammoth's factory so I just usually wait until Zero gets blown to bits in the first Sigma stage. (Also I always thought it was more appropriate, story wise to do so.)

For the Armored Armadillo stage, if you happen to have the Fire ability, it can take out that Digging robot a lot quicker than the lemon shooter.

Glad you pulled it off. I gave up on trying the first time I played this game back in the 90s and have stuck to the Zero dies method. Lol.
The best way to beat this game is in backwards order, with no optional upgrades and X buster only

The spider’s weakness is ice. Once you figure that out it’s not too hard
