Someone on TH-cam wanted this particular scene done, so here you go. Original comic by the great Tracy J. Butler www.lackadaisy.... Rocky voiced by SungWon Cho (me!) Edited by SungWon Cho
Old man river! That seems far too austere a name for something made of mirth and rage. 'O, roiling, red-blood river vein if chief among your traits is age you're a wily convoluted sage. Is "old" the thing to call what rings the vernal heart of Wester-lore: what brings us brassy myth-made Kings and preponderance of bug-type things. To challenge titans come before? Demiurge to a try at Avalon-once-more! And what august vitality in your wide aorta stream you must have had to oversee alchemic change of timber beam to iron, brick and engine steam! Your umber whiskey waters lance the prideful, sober sovereignty of faulty-haloed temperance: but your sport's for imps, not elderly. So if there's a name for migrant mass of veteran frivolity that snakes through seas of prairie grass and groves of summer sassafras. A name that flows as roguishly as gypsy waters, fast and free. It's your real name... Mississippi.
I would argue he understands the lines even a bit better. Nothing against Rocko in the animation (he hits lots of the lines perfectly) but the voice here seems to understand the point behind the poem, which is to say that "Old Man River" is an inferior nickname to the actual name of the river, which hints at more beautiful things than simple "this river is old."
I know I am over six years late to this party, but I want to post a counterpoint here to many of the comments I'm seeing: I really enjoyed the pacing in this. I felt the poetry deserved some savoring! That's all. That's the whole post.
Aye. When reading aloud or narrating, many people make the rookie mistake of letting their nerves get the better of them, and rushing through the words, as they would with the jitters that hit them with daily speech. But when playing to an audience, you have to savour the pauses and enunciation of words. It is the pauses, and vocal variety you use, which give your spoken word power.
According to the author in a comment on Webtoon, yes, she did write the poem, and other poems for Rocky. She says anything that falls flat she can just chalk up to Rocky being Rocky. But I'm with you there, this poem is friggin brilliant
This is so beautiful. I keep coming back to it. An inexorable swell of words as wide and reverent as the river it venerates, fantastic delivery of an amazing piece.
Man I just want to sit here and listen to this guy read poetry now. If I had a comfy armchair and a fire, this guy's poetry would be playing softly in the background.
I only heard about it a month or two ago, and I binged every released panel I could get my hands on! But the comic seems way older than four years. I've seen dubs up to 9 years old
I like both your version and the version in the pilot. But playing them side by side is magnificent when the lines overlap, that is if you're good at spacing the gaps of time between the dialogue and violin-ing in the pilot versus the much smaller gaps in dialogue here
I feel like it should be read a little faster in places and the piano score seems a little too melancholic, something more upbeat would suit. Maybe one of the darker bits of jazz from the American Gods soundtrack
It's fun coming back to these after you started officially voicing Mordecai to hear you voicing ALL the characters. Your range really is impressive.
Oh the beginning of this, I just realized, is the beginning of the pilot!
Don't worry officer, Rocky isn't drunk, he's just a lunatic.
Though his poetry is certainly something to behold.
He's a POET.
Here after the pilot. I recognized the poem immediately when it showed up.
"Officer, I'm not suicidal, I'm an artist."
What's the difference?
Most sane artist

cannedTunafish Encore?
@@OfficialGeneralGrant Encore, no? No encore? (Read it in Rocky's voice, it'll sound even more better.)
...beautiful.
This definitely deserves a fave, one of my favorite scenes and I'd say you did it justice.
Wow. This almost sounds like how it is in the new animated short! Perfect!

the writer is one hell of a poet
Poems like this are awesome... But they also tounge tie the hell outta me. :P

Wait… if you’re six years late… and I’m three years behind you… what am I !?!?!
can't believe they came from such a long way :,) ALso super happy you got the role of Mordicai for the official Pilot!! 😆🤩
Well now we got an official dub.
and animation.
I didn't expect the poem to be that beautiful. Did the original artist make it for the comic or did they get it from someone else?
According to the author in a comment on Webtoon, yes, she did write the poem, and other poems for Rocky. She says anything that falls flat she can just chalk up to Rocky being Rocky. But I'm with you there, this poem is friggin brilliant
Mordecai's rare poetic moments
i still listen to this periodically. it's so soothing.
It’s so weird to hear Mordecai’s voice from Rocky.
I thought it sounded beautiful! ❤
Seeing this animated fills my heart with joy
Tbh this will always be Rocky’s canon voice for me
This poem is gorgeous
This is very important.

Amen.
I think it's a tad slow, but it's a great read otherwise.

@@Lethal_Spoon What video? I've never seen Jello make a politics video.

Hey! It's the thing he said in the pilot!

:)
You really portrayed the poetry of the scene! Bravo, bravo!
Absolutely nailed it.
Woow..
X3
Poetry never seemed so cool!
I'm still waiting to see what's happening with that split coconut of his in his latest scheme. If anyone catch my drift...
So excited for the short film!
The officer looks upset that you didn't find a corpse.
Goddamn I can’t believe this comic has been going for 4 years...
I think it's more like ten years.
I only heard about it a month or two ago, and I binged every released panel I could get my hands on! But the comic seems way older than four years. I've seen dubs up to 9 years old
I love lackadaisy!
so, does this comic take place during the prohibition?
yup
It would have to or the main characters might not have a job.
Yeah, it’s fantastic.
Dah
It does, and it centers around a specific speakeasy.
yoo thats an awesome reading
Whose here after watching the pilot?
That was so pretty
I prefer singing it like a vintage musical.
Good job
That was a poem of Mississippi
Background music is Erik Satie Gymnopedie no. 2
That was a great read. :D

If only we could still do this.
I feel like it should be read a little faster in places and the piano score seems a little too melancholic, something more upbeat would suit. Maybe one of the darker bits of jazz from the American Gods soundtrack
Maybe a little melancholic, but I think it fits just fine.
ballin
Someone please animate Mordecai Drunk off the Bunny hugs and reciting the poem XD
Crap i played this song in orchestra i just cant remember what it's called...
Ryan AsAlways it sounds like some variation of gymnopedie, if that helps you remember.
Left your reverb on a bit too long at the end.
Hah, nerd
