  • DANCE is a Wood Sculpture Art.
Tree with dancing branches. The color of this magnolia wood has a unique flavor. It fascinated me when I started carving, puzzled me while I was carving, worried me while I was photographing it, and surprised me when I looked at the photos I had taken.
I have only ever carved using cypress wood, but after zelkova wood, I decided to try magnolia wood. The wood had a large knot from the bottom to the back, so I started carving it hoping that I will be successfully completed. The color of the carved parts and shavings of magnolia is, in a sense, the complete opposite of that of zelkova, a beautiful dull grayish brown. When I first started carving, I was surprised at how soft it was, but as I progressed, I realized that it sometimes felt hard depending on the direction of carving, the way the grain entered the wood, and the distance to the bark. I am relieved that I was able to safely cut off the tips of the four branches with bold undulations.
The video was shot in natural light.
I hope you feel and enjoy the colors, textures, and size.

Thank you. I'm so glad you enjoyed this video of my process. I used beeswax as a finishing coat.
