FOLDS / Wood Sculpture Art / Working Process from Design to Carving to Painting to Completion
FOLDS is a Wood Sculpture Art.
Tree with folds. It is a tiny miniature tree, but I have represented its majestic form and branches. I felt the new possibilities of zelkova wood. I realized that even in a small, limited space, much more freedom of expression was possible than I had imagined.
Each species of wood has a different color, texture, and carving feel, and each has its own attractive personality. I would like to create many miniature works using 5 - 7cm pieces of wood. I chose zelkova as the first wood to carve miniature trees. The design with its many deep folds was inspired by mushrooms. I was very excited about the start it, but I was also a little nervous because the smaller the wood, the higher the risk of injury.
There is only a limited space inside this small piece of wood. What and how can I represent within this limited space? With that in mind, I was completely absorbed in it, and carved. However, the small inner space of a small piece was difficult to carve, the grain direction was difficult to carve, and the zelkova wood was of course hard. In these adverse conditions that make carving difficult, I tried to find a way to break through by changing various chisels.
I am relieved that I was able to carve such a small piece without any problems using hard zelkova wood. Even with a small piece, I was able to represent more than I imagined, which will allow me to represent more when carving a larger piece, and I am sure that this will help me hone my skills.

WIND / Wood Sculpture Art / Working Process from Design to Carving to Painting to Completion

WIND is a Wood Sculpture Art. Tree with branches that move as if they are flowing in the wind. The deep, rich color of the wild cherry wood is eye-catching. The depth and richness of the color change dramatically depending on the intensity and direction of the light. Because it is a very hard wood, I wondered if I had chosen a piece of wood that was too large for my first project using wild che...

CAVE is a Wood Sculpture Art. The trunk of a giant tree with a large cave. For some reason, the wide space has been created during the long life of the tree, but he lives with the endless small creatures that live inside it. Representing a single bold undulation over a wide area. I believe that this will allow me to represent tranquil movement in contrast to the dynamic movement I have pursued....

So far I have removed cross sections with many cracks. I have been thinking about what kind of design is possible to make use of the parts. This was the first time that wood with so many cracks had been used. How can I create a design that represent my own style using wood with many cracks? The more difficult it feels, the more fascinated I became and the more I became obsessed with sculpting i...

DANCE is a Wood Sculpture Art. Tree with dancing branches. The color of this magnolia wood has a unique flavor. It fascinated me when I started carving, puzzled me while I was carving, worried me while I was photographing it, and surprised me when I looked at the photos I had taken. I have only ever carved using cypress wood, but after zelkova wood, I decided to try magnolia wood. The wood had ...

Very beautiful work! I feel envious - all my fruit wood (including cherry) are cracking through, I have to fill them with epoxy. I'm drying naturally, outside in the yard, I think there is a special drying chamber needed to get it right.

Thank you! I'm glad to hear your comment as you deal with cherry wood. I buy my wood from a sawmill that properly dries it. I use both mechanically dried and naturally dried wood.
